(CBS) Senator John McCain of Arizona and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani two of the front-runners for the Republican Presidential nomination in 2008 both enjoy favorable views from both Republican primary voters, a new CBS News poll finds, but early on in the race, voters favor Giuliani in a head-to-head match up.
Views of Giuliani are especially positive among both moderates and the conservatives that he and McCain are courting.
Voters planning to take part in a Republican primary next year think both McCain and Giuliani share their values, but would currently prefer Giuliani over McCain if the nomination fight came down to just the two of them.
PREFERENCE IF GOP NOMINATION WERE JUST MCCAIN V. GIULIANI (Among Republican Primary Voters)
Giuliani 50% McCain 21% Neither 13%
Both moderate and conservative primary voters say they would prefer Giuliani. Forty-eight percent of conservative voters said they would vote for Giuliani, while 21% of conservatives said they favored McCain.
Both men have been the subject of questions over how their personalities and styles of governance, as well as issue positions, might help or hinder their chances. In the poll, both are seen as having the right kind of temperament and personality to be President.
MCCAIN'S QUALITIES (Among Republican Primary Voters)
Has the right temperament to be president... Yes 59% No 21%
Shares your values... Yes 60% No 20%
GIULIANI'S QUALITIES (Among Republican Primary Voters)
Has the right temperament to be president... Yes 76% No 12%
Shares your values... Yes 57% No 23%
America's voters overall hold a mostly favorable view of McCain and have positive views of Giuliani by an even larger margin. Both men, however, remain unknown to many nationwide: half cannot yet form an opinion of McCain, and four in ten say the same of Giuliani.

THIS IS THE RUDY PING LIST
Let me know if you want on or off
Did CBS include any Conservatives in the poll ?
"Views of Giuliani are especially positive among both moderates and the conservatives "
Great news!
Yeah, most Republicans are conservatives.
Yep: H.C.
Not sure whether H.C. is Hilda or Hugo.

It shows that most conservatives are indeed quite rational human beings.
no way... McCain is far more socially conservative than Guiliani is. The next president will probably have at least 2 or 3 more Supreme Court choices to make. I wouldn't trust Guiliani in making those choices.
My wife and I voted for Keyes in the '96 primary. But when the general election came, we went out and cast our votes for Dole.
I would only trust McCain to stab me in the back if it got him on the Sunday shows.
I'm unsure who my first choice is but McNutjob is most definitely at the bottom of the list.
No one has asked me, yet!
McCain is experiencing what happens when he tries to become the Democrats' favorite Republican. Are any of his Democrat pals going to help him out now?
>> Did CBS include any Conservatives in the poll ?
I was referring to Conservative candidates like Gingrich and Hunter knowing the MSM prefers Rudy and John. At least they provided two choices.
Well... it's either Rudy or George Allen... ;) And since well... (Ahh I like Allen no need to pile on... I'm still irritated at that loss... )
A front runner can only fall in the end. But, IMHO, all the Rudy negatives are gonna deflect the front runner problems. Until the bitter end, Rudy will be fighting an uphill battle.
I believe he will win in the end. But he must prove to the American voter that he can withstand the crap that will be dealt by the extreme right.
I suggest that the "Rudy-in-drag" pic will become an American classic.
Actually, it is in the people that Giuliani would appoint to the Supreme Court that I most trust him to be conservative. While his personal opinion on social issues is liberal, his view of the Constitution is quite conservative.
Conservatives consider Reagan the ultimate conservative god, but it was he who gave us Sandra Day O'Connor. Since the early 80's a new and much larger generation of conservative lawyers and judges has emerged, so Giuliani or any Republican would have a deeper pool from which to choose than Reagan did.
It shows that conservatives are really liberal Rinos...
or something like that.
Great news, impressive numbers
I wholeheartedly share your sentiments.
On we go!!

While I won't vote for Rudy, I could hold my nose and vote for McCain. Of course I'd probably puke on the way back to my car.
Let me guess ... put you on the list? :)
"Let me guess ... put you on the list? :)
Only if it's the RUDY PING LIST and there is a spot open.
I;m kinda suprised about McCain. But he isn't really well liked. And polls have shown that there are concerns about his age.
Quite true. I believe Rudy commented that he believes in a constructionist interpretation of the constitution.
You heard it here first, as soon as McCain's aura as the front-runner is punctured, he is not going to recover. In a match-up against Rudy, he will never get about 25% of likely Republican voters again.
Raising money quickly is more important than ever, because we see all the big states moving up to February 5th and New Hampshire and Iowa are moving to December this year. This dynamic makes dark horses nearly impossible to emerge. It is unfortunate, but this election cycle, money will trump message.
Those who can raise loads of money are the only ones in the game. McCain will descend dramatically and will flat-line. In my estimation, the contest is then between Rudy, Mitt, and Newt. In that scenario, Rudy wins. If Newt does not run then Mitt wins.
What, exactly, gives you the impression that his view of the constitution is "quite conservative"?
So pro-life, pro-gun, anti-homosexual agenda, pro-free speech, non-global warming wackos are the "extreme right".
Good to know where you're coming from.
I agree that a Rudy win will not be easy. He will have to prove himself and explain his positions.
Precisely.
The primary is about philosophy.
The general is about politics.
I pray Duncan Hunter wins the primary. We need a strong conservative leader for a change.
Chill garv...I am pro-war. Period. Tell me who can win and take that job?
"On the Federal judiciary I would want judges who are strict constructionists because I am. I'm a lawyer. I've argued cases in the Supreme Court. I've argued cases in the Court of Appeals in different parts of the country. I have a very, very strong view that for this country to work, for our freedoms to be protected, judges have to interpret not invent the Constitution. Otherwise you end up, when judges invent the constitution, with your liberties being hurt. Because legislatures get to make those decisions and the legislature in South Carolina might make that decision one way and the legislature in California a different one. And that's part of our freedom and when that's taken away from you that's terrible."
The Republican Party of FL (with JEB as the spokesman) is pushing Mitt......who had an audience of 800 in The Villages today.
But I think RUDY can hold his own. He's been very popular in FL and draws very big crowds.
Hmmm, if the argument was framed in that way I would tend to agree with you. However, Guiliani is NOT pro-gun conrol as you put it, he was pro using the gun laws as they were in place to bring down the crime rate in NY. It worked. He is not pro-abortion, he is against making a woman into a criminal for having an abortion. He is not pro-gay, he is for allowing civil unions. He is not pro-illegal immigaration, he is for strong enforcement of our current laws. Look at what he has said, not what you THINK he has said.
Yeah, I'm curious about Jeb's support of Romney. Yet Bush has helped Rudy secure the top people to run his campaign.
More "fake but true" polls from Dan Rather and See B.S.
More "fake but true" polls from Dan Blather and See B.S....
So JEB helped RUDY secure top campaign people.....glad to hear that.....
BYW JEB has not endorsed Mitt...just said he's a good candidate that people need to look at.
No, Jeb did not help Rudy. W did.
Wondering if the two brothers agree.
I went back and read my post. It was confusing! :)
AND would NOT VOTE for Rudy Giuliani if he was running against Beelzebub himself..
As it is...... he will be running against his consort, Hillary..
