This I would say is more about poverty than religion. The people of the Nigerian delta are a self-containted strata of poor. Oil royalties flow to the government in a veritable river of cash, but nothing comes back to these people. They are about as desperate as desperate gets. The oil companies could buy themselves a lot of breathing room if they build some schools and hospitals, maybe brought in some food aid for these people. Yes, I know it's tantamount to extortion, but call it the price of doing business. Plus you can put a good face on an industry that doesn't have a popular image (deserved or undeserved).
