Personally I don't think many conservative evangelical christians resent or are nervous about Romney's Mormon faith. I think for the most part it's the drive by media trying to brow-beat conservatives with the mormon thing. According to an article I read in National Review Romney invited alot of the evangelical christian leaders up to MAssachusetts to chat with him and most of the leaders came away with a very favorable opinion of him. There are of course exceptions and conservatives christians like myself have serious theological disagreements with Mormon theology but I would vote for him if he gets the nomination. Given his poll numbers he really needs to pick it up a bit escpacially when they start having debates in the spring.

I'm with you. I'm not interested in Romney, but its more because he strikes me as too weak in the knees. But if he's the nominee, I'll back him without reservation.
Measure the gulf between my views and his, compare it to the gulf between me and the gaggle in the opposing party and its an easy choice.
I do not recall the all the ink when Orrin Hatch ran in 2000. He is a Morman as well.

The smart thing for Romney to do right now is to issue a 'no comment' to any questions about his religion.
Indeed, notice that all the media reporting about potential GOP candidates is designed to disqualify him -- McCain's temper, Romney's faith, Rudy's personal stance on abortion and gay marriage, Hunter's unelectability.
They're trying to make it impossible for the GOP voters to get behind any one candidate.

While I think Mormon theology has some really strange aspects, I personally don't have a 'problem' with Mormons.
Having said that, there are a lot of conservative Christians who more or less view Mormonism as a non-Christian cult, so I would guess more than a few GOP primary voters in key states, like SC, might hold it against Romney.
My own problem with Mitt Romney so far isn't his faith, but his name. I'm not sure I want a president named "Mitt". George, James, Thomas, John, Andrew, William....Mitt. It just doesn't fit. "Mitt" sounds like "Biff" or "Skippy".
In terms of conduct, Mormons have expectations of members of their faith that I have no desire to follow (no coffee or cokes would be tough on me, and I have seen nothing which indicates to me that they're sinful). I have never seen Mormons try to force their beliefs on others, except by persuasion. Do I think a Mormon can go to heaven? They profess Jesus Christ as Savior, and although I disagree with much of what they believe, I'm fairly certain I have errors in my understanding of faith, also. That means it's God's decision, not mine.
Would I vote for a Mormon? Possibly, if I thought he would make a good President. There are some devout Christians I know that are good as gold, but don't have the sense God gave a goose. Are they Christian? Yep? Are they Presidential material? Nope.
Actually, I think his first name is Willard, Mitt is his middle name that he goes by.
Mitt is fine. We don't want another Willy in the WH.
Why doesn't the DBM write about the strong family values observant Mormans have? They really take care of their families and each other.
