Keep in mind that 75% of the Earth's surface is water. If and when the asteroid hits, it will most likely hit the ocean. The chances of it hitting a major city are exceedingly remote.

Hahaha, that's probably what they would use.

The UN has activated G force, and with the help of Godzilla, Rhodan, and Mothra they hope to destroy the asteroid, which is merely a shell being used to transport King Ghidorah to the earth. Movie rights have been purchased by Toho.

Fat chance of getting anything done unless Gamera signs on. It's a known fact that Godzilla and Rhodan hate each other worse than Jeter hates A-Rod.

I'd rather have hamas in charge of saving the world from anything.

At least we know where they stand!

Get ready for an Asteroid Tax.

No no no!
Asteroid "credits"; sounds more sophisticated and thought out than the crass word, "extortion"...

How bout we just pass a law against asteroids hitting the earth and call it good.

Well, that's already working in California with global swarming ---errrr "warming"...

Well, if we just got the dems to pass a law changing the value of the force of gravity a little, it would throw the asteroid right out of earth's path.

We have to pay for this? Let Russia, China and the other terrorist nations pay for this one, no more money from the USA, let them cough up the bucks.

The plasma is created by the instant conversion

Anybody can do the calculations for himself. The conversion is far from instantaneous and will go on for a considerable time.

Even worse. As the water drains into the crater and sea level falls overnight most ships will be left high and dry att their docks.

The meteorite will have zero kinetic energy (thus a complete conversion) when the velocity of the meteorite itself goes to zero in a fraction of a second after it hits the ground. All of that energy will have been used to break it apart, superheat (thus the plasma) and compress the ground where it hit, throw debris everywhere, and produce a very strong shock wave through both the Earth and the air. The amount of kinetic energy spent in that moment is absolutely insane so it will seem quite like a nuclear explosion.

There is simply no nuclear reaction. It's a kinetic energy kill just like from a tank round, only on a much, much larger scale in both velocity and mass.

The ships would probably be destroyed first due to the monstrous tsunami such a hit would generate. I'd prefer one major inland city got hit, as an ocean hit would would wipe out all of the cities on the coast.

Ahaaa, the UN just came up with a sure fire way to justify a world per capita tax system....the World Anti-Asteroid Defense initiative!

The thing is, we might actually need such a system some-day though I'm not sugesting the UN should control it!

"How bout we just pass a law against asteroids hitting the earth and call it good."

If asteroids are outlawed, only outlaws will have asteroids.

Hmm. Ya know, that could work out ... Paging Robert Heinlein.

"If asteroids are outlawed, only outlaws will have asteroids."

So are you suggesting that there is a right to keep and bear asteroids?
