Teen 'sport killings' of homeless on the rise

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (CNN) -- All Nathan Moore says he wanted to do was smoke pot and get drunk with his friends.

Killing Rex Baum was never part of the plan that day in 2004.

"It all started off as a game," Moore said.

The 15-year-old and his friends were taunting the homeless man -- throwing sticks and leaves -- after having a couple of beers with him.

No big deal, Moore says, but he's sorry for what came next.

It was a mistake, he said, a sudden primal surge that made him and his friends Luis Oyola, 16, and 17-year-old Andrew Ihrcke begin punching and kicking Baum.

"Luis says 'I'm gonna go hit him,' We're all laughing, thought he was joking around,'" but he wasn't, Moore concedes. "We just all started hitting him."

I really did think this sort of behavior would happen in England first, with the hoodlums. I dont know, maybe they're just emulating the "Mookies".

Kids are stoopid and dont understand their own feelings.

I wonder if they killed him because they subconciously saw themselves becoming him?

I just remember the scene with the bum near the river. When I saw the movie I thought, "No way would this stuff every really happen". I wish I was right. I'm taking down the "Home" sign tonight.

They hurled anything they could find -- rocks, bricks, even Baum's barbecue grill -- and pounded the 49-year-old with a pipe and with the baseball bat he kept at his campsite for protection.

Ihrcke smeared his own feces on Baum's face before cutting him with a knife "to see if he was alive," Moore said.

After destroying Baum's camp, the boys left the homeless man -- head wedged in his own grill -- under a piece of plastic where they hoped the "animals would eat" him.

Then, Moore says, they took off to grab a bite at McDonald's.

* * * *

They bragged about it around town. Police picked them up and they described what happened.

All three teens pleaded no contest to first degree reckless homicide charges and went to prison.

What?!?! These punks deliberately kill a man, desecrate his body, hide the evidence of their crime, and then brag about it, and they get to plead to reckless homicide? The should be doing life sentences in the general population of a maximum security prison.

It seems like when there are more killers, they get a lighter sentence - diminished responsibility, they just got carried away. IMO, the prosecutor should go for the most serious charge. The overwhelming odds against the victim should be considered aggravating circumstances. These go-along caught-up-in-the-violence compassless thugs are the ones who wreck cities and civilizations.

This is a direct result of Global Warming.

Cause and effect, so plain to see.

I think that's a little complicated. I think they did it because they thought it was fun. I also think the only reason any of them have remorse is because they got caught.

You may be correct.

While I hate to paraphrase Garrison Kiellor he had a theory the warm weather bring loitering around and trouble. He claimed that winter puts the lid on "riff raff"

Very few people are out when its 20 below and when you see someone in that weather...anyone, theyre your friend~!
