There is a very good lesson here for gun writers that should be taken to heart:
Spend a little bit less time in the hunting camps and a lot more time at the public outdoor shooting ranges. That a gun writer would be so ignorant of the popularity of the black rifles is hard to imagine.

The stupid bastard still doesn't get it! Pro-hunting and anti-gun doesn't sell. He continues to slam the so called "black guns". what a dork.
Not to wish you any more bad luck Zumbo, but how long will it be before you are labeled a raciest for the "black guns" comment?

A link to a simple down to earth video at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysf8x477c30
A 10 minute video that explains fully automatic and semiautomatic firearms.
Any 10 year old and even a few members of the media should be able to understand it.

"-- I'm willing to seize this opportunity to educate hunters and shooters who shared my ignorance. If you're willing to allow me to do that, we can indeed, in my mind, form a stronger bond within our ranks. Maybe in a roundabout way we can bring something good out of this. --"

The proof of your sincerity will be in your forthcoming efforts "to educate".
Indeed Zumbo, -- your mistake has given you an opportunity, -- a "bully pulpit" to speak out, - nationally, - on one of our most divisive political issues. ---
--- The ~fact~ is, - the issue is, -- Federal, State and Municipal governments all over the United States are ignoring our Constitutions clear words. -- They are infringing on our inalienable, individual rights to own and carry arms.
If you do not make it clear, ~soon~ that you support and defend the Constitution, as it is written on this issue, -- believe me, nothing good will "come out of this".

He still doesn't get it.
It isn't about hunting - it's about being able to defend yourself from tyranny. I used to hunt, but it was too much like work - I like my meat in styrofoam packages :-)
I kind of feel sorry for the guy (just a little bit since it was his colossal ignorance that got him into this fix, but at 67 if he hadn't caught on to the fact that there are alot more of us who are taking the 2nd amend in the spirit in which it was written than go out kill animals he was definitely not looking to learn), but he did it to himself, and he'll have to live with the consequences.
His elitist attitude is very common among hunters who somehow think that their bolt action rifles are safe from the anti-gun forces and the "no one needs an AK-47 anyway" (I taught my wife about needing when I walked in one day with Ma Deuce SCREECH!!!!! WHAT DO YOU NEED THAT THING FOR??? I don't need it I want it. She calmed down after a while.

Tell that to Rudy Giuliani who believes that the protections of the 2nd Amendment apply only to hunting, collections, and not to individual firearms ownership for personal defense, etc. It might be that people of his ilk will have to be shown one day rather than told

Did I miss something? A quick text search found neither the word "sorry" nor the word "apologise" in that post.
begin{Hypothetical}
I spoke from profound ignorance and I am sorry my knowledge of hunting is so skimpy I don't have a clue what tools are used outside of those provided by my (former) sponsors.
I am also profoundly sorry that I used the phrase "terrorist weapon" and "assault rifle" to describe a group of firearms that are neither. I also apologise to the manufacturers, sellers at all levels, and users (espicially Americans in uniform) of those firearms.
end{Hypothetical}
Feel free to cut-and-paste the above Mr. Zumbo, though I doubt ANYone would believe it now...

Second Amendement is not about hunting and he appears still not to get it.

I shot a friend's $15,000 Perazzi a few weeks back. It was a nice gun I'll grant you, and pretty as can be, but I shot my other friend's $3,000 Beretta better, and I still hit 24 birds with my $500 Mossberg Silver Reserve.
I could afford the Perazzi if I really wanted it, but I just can't see paying that kind of money to hit 1 more bird out of 25. Personally I'm leaning toward buying the Beretta.

The advantage of the Perrazi's, Kreigoff's etc... are that they are made to shoot 10's of 1000's of rounds, and rebuildable by the factory.
In shotgunning though, nothing trumps stock fit. I went from 16-18 at skeet to 22-23 due to an extra 1/4 height of comb.

OK. He used the word "hunt" (or a variant) 15 times in this article.
How many times did he mention the "Constitution," the "Second Amendment," "liberty," "rights"?
Zero.
And he certainly never acknowledged that the prime purpose or an armed populace under the Second Amendment is to credibly deter tyranny (i.e. to be prepared shoot tyrants and their troops).
I think the guy is a moron or a Brady plant.

I don't think the guy deserved to be fired for a momentary lapse in judgment.
And if you had a co-worker who clumsily revealed that he wanted to molest children, would that be a momentary lapse, too?
Sorry, but he revealed a deep-seated hostility to and lack of understanding of gun rights. I don't refuse to forgive the revelation. I refuse to forgive holding such abhorrent views (and failing to correct the error.)
Apologizing for revealing an internal failing does not forgive the failing, unless the failing is credibly corrected.

Now all we have to do is, is it sincere or did he have a Mel Gibson moment and really let his inner thoughts out?
Who would call them "terrorist guns" who had the slightest appreciation for the right to keep and bear arms?
