James Cameron has truly moved beyond making sappy movies about ocean liner wrecks. He can now lay claim to being an idolater of the rankest order. Relying upon Pope Benedict to turn the other check in accordance with misinterpreted scripture, Cameron has accused the Gospels of inventing the resurrection the way Michael Moore does documentaries.

'TITANIC' director James Cameron and Simcha Jacobovici, a filmmaker-archaeologist, are set to unveil three coffins this week that they say are those of Jesus, Mary and Mary Magdalene. In an coming documentary, Cameron and Jacobovici cite "scientific evidence" that the resurrection of Jesus never happened and that Jesus fathered a son named Judah with Mary Magdalene.

Such claims should, and surely will, be met with overwhelming skepticism. For example, the filmmakers use DNA tests to build their case - but whose DNA is being compared with whose? Did they swab the Holy Ghost? - The NY Post (27 February 2007)

While this disingenuous hucksterism disgusts the average, church-going American, it should shock no one. Dan Brown’s suspense novels rewrite enough church history to make it difficult to recognize whose religion he actually disparages. If his books weren’t set in The Vatican, it would be hard to distinguish the behavior of Dan Brown’s priest characters from that of Muqtada al-Sadr.

A growing number of Westerners resent Christianity, as portrayed by the modern intellectual elite. They increasingly want to conflate the local minister down the street with the collared child molester in Mystic River, or with the thuggish Vatican concierge in Dan Brown’s Angels and Demons. Those who don’t relate to Christianity always seem to find ways of debasing it.

James Cameron’s latest publicity stunt takes this trend in a new direction. It suggests that Christ engaged in sexual intercourse with Mary of Magdalene and father a child named Judas. Cameron has even planned to run his documentary on the subject to coincide with Easter. This will endear him to Hollywood and to everyone who reads Andrew Sullivan because he derides others for being Christianist.

So a bunch of people in the West hate Christianity for imposing restrictions on their desires and for impugning behaviors that these individuals wish to indulge in. That chaffing against restraint is understandable, but not when Christianity is placed in context with the other religions throughout the world.

Christianity doesn’t let you do whatever, whenever, but it also hasn’t shot it’s heretics for several centuries. That’s not true of certain other religions. Just ask Jost Postens about Islamic editorial policies.

Cameron knows this. He chooses to accuse Christ of bastardies with economic discretion and an eye out for his wellbeing. He expects to make a pile of money. He expects to only receive criticism from flyover land, which doesn’t keep you off the red carpet near Hollywood and Highland anyhow.

People will call Cameron ‘provocative’, ‘audacious’, an ‘iconoclast’. He doesn’t show audacity, he shows calculated cynicism. Cameron will grow very rich off this pathetic stunt, but he will never be fit to wash Salmon Rushdie’s jock strap.

Actually, Crucifixion was a common punishment. Also, it was a punishment for the poor and the working class. People, who by most standards of the day never could have afforded a family plot. More than one guy named Jesus could have been believed guilty of a capital offense and punished that way.

Someone who was poor enough to crucify, rather than punishing in a more dignified manner, would not have been able to afford a box to be buried in. Those things cost a lot more, proportionally, than they do now.

His conclusions do not necessarily follow from the observations. There are many alternate explanations which can readily match the facts. From what I have seen, this yahoo apparently ignores them.

Well, there you go. Either the guy in the box (if indeed there be bones) was crucified or not. If not, wrong guy, end of story. If so, then it's something unusual, as you say.

Miriam/Mariam/Mary, Iusuf/Joseph, and Yeshua/Joshua/Jesus were about the most common names around at that time.

Look how common names are in the Jesus story in general. Barabbas (of "Give us Barabbas" fame) was named Jesus Barabbas. Two of the disciples were named James (as was one of Jesus' brothers). Two disciples were named Simon (and Jesus ate with a Pharisee named Simon and another man named Simon carried His cross for him), and two may have been named Judas (Thaddeus is sometimes listed as a Judas in addition to Judas Iscariot). As to Marys, we have Jesus' mother, Mary Magdalene, and Mary of Bethany. In addition to the mischievous Salome who danced for John the Baptist's head, there was a Salome who was a follower of Jesus. John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus, but he is not be confused with John the apostle.

There are not all that many "characters" in the story of Jesus, but of those named, a surprising # of them have the same name.

The only thing that is empty is the head of anyone who buys this fabrication. I saw one story that said DNA evidence proves they were married. Oh, really? Unrelated people have a DNA match once they become married? This isn't even good faux-science.
