Michael Steele Campaign Debt

Dear Steele Supporter:

You've always known me to call it as I see it, so I will get straight to the point.

Steele for Maryland Inc. has just over $205,000 in unpaid bills from my Senate campaign.

As hard as it is to write this letter, you're one of the few I can count on to help me raise the dollars I need to pay all of my Committee's bills.

This is why I am asking you to please send me a debt-retirement contribution of $35, $75, $250, $500 or even more.

If this amount is more than you can send at this time, I'll be every bit as thankful with a contribution at whatever amount you deem appropriate.

Because you've always been there when I've needed you, I'm hoping that I count on you to send your contribution today.

I've spent a lot of time thinking about our campaign for the U.S. Senate. And while it may seem hard to believe given how nasty our opponents were with their attacks, I'd do it again if I had the opportunity.

Here's why. Our campaign was about educating our families, friends and neighbors on the fact that America is the promise of endless possibilities.

We talked about our belief that individuals taking responsibility for their own hard-earned money is far better than any government effort to manage our financial decisions.

That's not to say that government has no role to play - it does. But government must realize its role must be limited.

Government must build the path to opportunity, but then it must get out of the way and let us realize our American dream!

No matter how you dress it up, it is always better to elevate those in need beyond reliance on a government program. During the campaign, we discussed how it is immoral to relegate individuals to permanent dependence on a government program.

If our country expects to succeed, if we expect our children to succeed, we must look to ourselves and not to government to raise our kids, empower our family, start our business, or provide care to our aging parents.

Individual freedom is the means to empowerment; And empowerment is the key to building the wealth necessary for our children and grandchildren to own a piece of America.

America's legacy reminds us that opportunity speaks louder than dependence and that self reliance overcomes adversity.

But most of all we fundamentally understand that it is freedom which energizes the spirit of the values we hold dear.

These are the beliefs of our Republican Party. These are the beliefs and the principles that drew me to this party 28 years ago and compelled me to run for the U.S. Senate.

So my friend, as I close this letter, the only way our opponents win is if we go away and stop fighting for our ideas and principles.

You can rest assured that I'm never going to stop fighting. I'm going to remain in the arena. And I sure hope you are going to be standing beside me.

Sincerely,

Michael Steele

P.S. We need to close the books on my Senate campaign soon, but in order to do that we must raise another $205,000 to cover all of our bills. You've come through so many times in the past, and I hope I can count on you again now.

Whatever amount you're willing to contribute would be greatly appreciated. I just ask that you please do so today. Thank you.

I wanted to post this in order to confirm the legitimacy of the e-mail before sending a contribution. I'm a little wary of e-mail scams. Is this legit?

Look on his web site. He is saying the same thing there, so it look legit, but I'd do it on his web site, not hit any email hotlink.

As an aside, I wouldn't be surprised to see him tapped for VP.

Don't be surprised. He could bring a lot to a ticket. Not sure if he has any skeletons in the old closet, but he could attract a wide range of voters.
