WASHINGTON (CNN) -- House Republican Whip Roy Blunt, R-Missouri, announced Wednesday that Republicans will object on the House floor to Rep. William Jefferson, D-Louisiana, getting a seat on the House Homeland Security Committee.
Jefferson is entangled in a federal bribery investigation related to his dealings with a telecommunications company. Federal investigators found $90,000 in cash in his freezer in 2005 after Jefferson allegedly accepted a $100,000 bribe from an FBI informant. Despite the investigation, Jefferson was re-elected to a ninth term to his New Orleans' seat in a run-off election in December.
Blunt called the move by the Speaker Pelosi, who trumped ethics reform in last fall's congressional campaign, "such a contradiction to what the Speaker said she stood for during the campaign."

Object?
How about going freaking nuts over this?
How about calling a press conference?
How about saying "no frigging way this is going to happen"?
Can anyone here play this game?
The Retarded Party vs The Stupid Party
FUNNY
I see know possible way that he could get at least a secret security clearance while under investigation by the feds.
"Why hasn't this slimeball Democrat been indicted yet?"
Uhhhh, because he is a Democrat?
And TWO YEARS LATER, the feds cannot bring an indictment?
Not only THIS, but he willingly mis-appropriated NG assets during the height of the Katrina catastrophe to remove questionable items from his home, so he's proven he's happy to incorporate corruption into US security apparatus!!!!
Because Denny Hasert was defended him.
The Republicans are so moronic and spineless when it comes to attacking Democrats. What more did Republicans need? The spinelessness is why they are in the minority now.
Didn't Slick fire all the Bush41 Justice prosecutors when he took office?
This guy shouldn't even be in Congress, let alone up for this seat. Here's some interesting stuff from Wikipedia, which suggests that this guy and his "family" control some local clout for the Dims, but that this influence has diminished since Katrina.:
"Jefferson and his family control one of the most sophisticated and effective get-out-the-vote organizations in South Louisiana: the Progressive Democrats. In 2002, their political machine helped Jefferson's protégée Renée Gill Pratt being elected as a Councilmember, even though it was unable to ensure that Jefferson's daughter Jalila would succeed Pratt as a Representative to the Louisiana State House. It also contributed to the election of Jefferson's sister Betty as a municipal assessor, in 1998, 2002 and 2006.
In recent years, New Orleans-based political machines in general have lost clout. This trend has accelerated since thousands of New Orleanians were scattered across the United States, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The influence of the Progressive Democrats in particular may be compromised even more by the current corruption investigation that affects Jefferson."

From the comments I've read from his constituents, it's more of a badge of honor.
He fired all of the district US attorneys. Of course, the NYTimes and Carl Levin are all upset that W has just fired 7 of them and didn't mention Slick's purge.
"The State Dept & Justice is infected with liberal democrats that were never expunged when they should have been."
Probably true, but the fact is both are run by Bush appointees. If Bush really wants an indictment, he can get it in a flash.
Those nutless wonders in the GOP should have gone Postal long ago on the likes of Jefferson, as well as Conyers, Murtha, McDermott, Mollohan and all the other panty sniffers around Madame Nancy.
That's a good comparison, actually. Some folks don't care if their politicians are crooked and actually support it if he can "stick it to the man".
Good.
Nancy's making some really dumb moves.
why are we even putting democrats on homeland security. they don't believe there is a threat and don't believe the war on terror exists...in fact, they want OUT of Iraq.
I'll believe it when I see it. Republicans are currently without balls.
Yeah but the Justice Department is allegedly headed by a Republican. Come on, they found the money in his freezer 6 months ago. What are they waiting for?
You're not kidding.
Supposedly, there is current legislation that has been submitted that would eliminate a Congresscritters pension, if they are convicted of certain offenses while in Congress. Why a Congressperson, etc. is still entitled to a government pension after a criminal conviction is beyond me. Oh wait, "they" voted for it.
The problem is, there are other laws on the books that make it difficult to obtain "convictions" in the first place. Perhaps an outside entity needs to oversee how the Congress and Senate are monitored regarding corruption investigations and convictions. Right now, it is just the foxes guarding the henhouse and they all protect each other on both sides of the aisle. (Just my opinion).
H.R.476 : To amend title 5, United States Code, to make noncreditable for Federal retirement purposes any Member service performed by an individual who is convicted of any of certain offenses committed by that individual while serving as a Member of Congress, and for other purposes.
