Prayer Vigil on Iran

Posted on 02/28/2007 11:05:14 AM PST by dervish

PRAYER VIGIL ON TA'ANIT ESTHER Iranian Mission @ 40th Street and 3rd Avenue, New York Thursday March 1, 2007 from Noon - 1pm

It happened 2,500 years ago in ancient Persia, and it’s happening again today in Iran. An evil leader named Haman wanted to kill all the Jews. Now an evil leader named Ahmadinejad wants to do the same. This is the moment when Jews—indeed all people who believe in justice—must come together in solidarity. Queen Esther delared, “Gather all the Jews in this city” for fasting and prayer (Book of Esther 4:16). We’ve been celebrating Purim ever since. Please give up your lunch hour and join our solidarity prayer vigil. What worked then can work now. We dare not be silent. Our only strength is in numbers.

Co-Sponsored by: Hadassah, New York Board of Rabbis, Weisenthal Center, World Jewish Congress, ZOA and others.

The Iranians are the ones that better start praying because their punk-slapping is at hand.

I generally refer to Pres. Ahmamadjihadi as "Haman."

Ironic, tommorrow's first reading at daily mass is going to be a reading from the book of Esther.

"Ironic, tommorrow's first reading at daily mass is going to be a reading from the book of Esther."

Not really. The Roman Catholic (and Anglican and Orthodox) church calendars are (very) loosely based on the Jewish year, each in some form or fashion.

The Fast of Esther is tomorrow --- 11 Adar, 5767 (Thu 3/1/2007) and Purim is 14 Adar, 5767 (Sun 3/4/2007).

Lots of hung over Jews monday.

Thanks for the response back. The passage in question is Esther C: 12, 14-16, 23-25. From my Bible, a RC one, it is called the prayer of Esther.

Also during the Christian Lent, different readings of the Jewish scriptures are read in regards to what in my church is called salvation history or the people who are a part of.

I believe that prayer to be a later-time addition to the Book.

Esther is (in the Hebrew version) one of only two books of the Bible that do not directly mention God (the other is Song of Songs). It is the only book of the Tanakh that is not represented among the Dead Sea scrolls. It has often been compared to the first half of the Book of Daniel and to the deuterocanonical Books of Tobit and Judith for its subject matter.

Additions to Esther

An additional six chapters appear interspersed in Esther in the Septuagint, the Greek translation, which then was noted by Jerome in compiling the Latin Vulgate; additionally, the Greek text contains many small changes in the meaning of the main text.

The extra chapters include several prayers to God, perhaps because it was felt that the above-mentioned lack of mention of God was inappropriate in a holy book. Jerome recognized them as additions not present in the Hebrew Text and placed them at the end of his Latin translation as chapters 10:4-16:24. However, some modern Roman Catholic English Bibles restore the Septuagint order, such as Esther in the NAB.

I hope you're right, but with the Dummycraps in power I'm afraid they're safe for awhile, and their modern-day Haman probably knows it too :-(

Turns out that "Ahmadinejad" contains all the letters of "Haman." In English, at least.

I'm impressed. Other than the ZOA, all the organizations listed are ultra-liberal and probably don't even celebrate Purim.
