CPAC: Coulter on GOP candidates, leaning Romney

Posted on 03/02/2007 1:35:28 PM PST by George W. Bush
During her CPAC Q&A session, Ann Coulter said:
Question: "What do you think of Governor Romney's candidacy for the presidency?"
Ann's reply:
"I think he's probably our best candidate."
"I think it is fair to say, and this is coming from someone who supported Pete DuPont, Alan Keyes, Pat Buchanan, Steve Forbes so it's not like I won't go for an underdog."
"But I think we have to be serious about this. I think our choice is among Gingrich, Giuliani, McCain, and Romney.
And Giuliani is very very liberal and when this country gets to the point (and I have a love letter to him in my current book, Godless, what he did for New York was magnificent) but when this country gets to the point where both presidential candidates support abortion, I think we can hang it up as a country."
And McCain, I think has some problems because everyone who supports McCain would have to switch party registrations to vote for him."
"I love Gingrich, I think he's brilliant, he was crucial, the man for his time. We don't even know if he's running for president but assuming he is, I kinda think his time has passed and, I don't know, it could come back again, like Eighties music, but I think his time was over..."
"...And you have to say about Romney, he tricked liberals into voting for him." (laughter)
"I like a guy who hoodwinks liberals so easily. And also the one thing I have a very soft spot for is that I love Mormons and the reason I love Mormons (among other things) is that...you may have forgotten this...But Bill Clinton in Utah in 1992 came in third (in Utah). Now that's a fine state."
Responding to another question about why she has not herself run for office, Ann responded:
"You know, people keep saying, criticizing some of our presidential candidates, saying 'well, they're not Reagan, they're not Reagan.'"
"A Reagan comes around once every hundred years so don't keep comparing everyone to Reagan. It's a very tough job to run for president."
"I was just saying, the only thing I don't understand about Romney is why he wants to run for president. He has a great life, he's rich, he has a beautiful family...why ruin it by running for president?"
"But hopefully, he won't think of that."

Oh THERE you are! I pinged you to the thread showing Duncan Hunter having a strong showing in the SC straw poll but you must have been on the potty.
Admittedly, it was a small sampling... but even you have to admit that for a guy with almost no MSM coverage or national name recognition... he seems to generate some exitement...

Sorry, I just was trying to get it transcribed and didn't get that far. I don't doubt Ann is very fond of Duncan because she's said so many times.
To: George W. Bush
I think the world of Ann Coulter but she is essentially saying that she applauds a liar just so long as he is lying for her. What I would like to ask her is, how do you know which side he is
really on. I'm sorry but the man says L I A R to me like a big neon sign. She is calling this one wrong.
But I could vote for Gingrich.

I didn't get the impression that she was endorsing Romney, hence my title of '...leaning Romney'.
Look at the points she raised as sort of a general survey of the GOP candidates. Notice how she focused on Romney's success in fooling liberals into voting for him.
Anyway, this wasn't a policy speech. It was just fun Q&A with the audience. And that's the spirit I posted it in.
To: msnimje

When she finds out Hunter is going to trounce Mitt, she will get on the D train. Well, I am on the D Train. This is why I think Hunter has no chance. You see, I also supported Alan Keyes and Steve Forbes. Pete DuPont didn't blip my radar screen, and I still like Pat Buchanan, although I haven't understood his outspoken hatred of Israel (did he have a brother killed on the USS Liberty?).
I listened to Hunter at CPAC and could get enthusiastic about delivering literature for him. It's early in the race and front runners tend to lead the way into the brick wall at this part of every race. Therefore, I tell myself Hunter can catch the wave.
Still, each morning I must look at myself in the mirror and remember, this is me. If I support Hunter, he can save himself lots of heartache by packing it in right now and heading for the bowling alley.

Found these SC Straw Poll results on a SC news site.:)
John McCain: 164
Rudy Giuliani: 162
Duncan Hunter: 158
Sam Brownback: 85
Mitt Romney: 80
Mike Huckabee: 21
To: pgyanke
Hunter has been running ads in SC for about 45 days pushing border enforcement and fair trade.
He has more name recognition here than probably anywhere except his home state.
