Former Virginia Gov. James S. Gilmore III will become the first Republican presidential contender to say publicly that the three top-ranked party candidates are phony conservatives.
Mr. Gilmore singles out former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, former New York City Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and Sen. John McCain of Arizona in an ad that will be posted tomorrow on YouTube.com and his campaign Web site (www.gilmoreforpresident.com) as well as e-mailed to likely voters in the first-in-the-nation Iowa caucuses.
"The three leading challengers for our party's nomination may be good men, but they simply do not share our conservative values," Mr. Gilmore says in the ad.

I guess if no one's paying attention to your campaign, you have to trash the other candidates to get noticed.

Did you see this? No, but it doesn't surprise me. Gilmore's best friend is is own ego.
He would have gone nowhere had it not been for the popularity of George Allen. And his "No Car Tax" scheme, while brilliant campaign strategy, was horrible policy and it ultimately led to Governor Mark Warner and Governor Tim Kaine.
Gilmore won't carry Virginia. Not even in the primaries. He doesn't even have the "true conservatives" in Virginia. That's evidenced by the fact that Jerry Kilgore is Rudy's chair here.

I've been pulling for Gilmore since he announced. Looks like he's taking the gloves off and trying to garner some press coverage. He's certainly correct when he calls the frontrunners fake conservatives. Because they are fake conservatives.

Gilmore was a very good Governor but would get killed by the Rats and, excuse me, he`s not very dynamic. The joke is that he has zero chance of winning and if he starts the negative junk against other Republican candidates, he ain`t helping.

Oh no. There's a certain amount of truth there. But I'm a Virginian, I lived through the real story.
Gilmore's legacy was creating a "No Car Tax" scheme. For all the hoopla you hear about how he "eliminated" it, it still exists.
And the fact is, it never went away. The campaign strategy for the "No Car Tax" plan was brilliant. But they walked into office not having a clue as to how they would implement the plan.
Ultimately they did pass the plan. And here's how it works.
Before the plan if you owed $500 in car tax, you paid that to the locality.
After the plan, depending on the percetage of the current reducation (let's use 50%) ~ you still are assessed the $500 in tax on your vehicle. However, since we are at the 50% rate, you pay $250. THE STATE pays the other $250 to the locality on your behalf.
So, the bottom line is that the state is paying half of your taxes. It's not a car tax reduction program. It's an entitlement program for car owners.
Thus, state spending increased significantly. And while there was a surplus, it allowed the Democrats to seize the issue and pound away the "fact" that the state was out of money.
So, in 2001, we lost to Mark Warner who pushed through the largest tax increase in the history of the Commonwealth.
Gilmore was already following his national ambitions while still Governor. He was named the chair of the RNC.
Because of this he was frequently gone. For a good while he was referred to as "Governor Gone More."
As chair of the RNC that year, he managed to preside over the GOP losing the Governor's races in New Jersey and Virginia, his home state.
That's the "legacy" I remember.

"Fake conservatives"...Well at least he didn't call them fake Republicans. Republicans have a wide spectrum of thought and beliefs, that's why there are only 2 major political parties. And why no one should be called a RINO. Even if it's a favorite term around here.

I can scarcely blame him for NJ. The RINO incumbent, DiFrancesco, his predecessor Christie Whitman, and the state RINO establishment eviscerated the Conservative nominee, Jersey City Mayor Bret Schundler, and quite clearly preferred the pervert rodent, McGreevey, who won. You're also not mentioning the internecine battle for Gilmore's office that year between the AG and the Lt Governor. John Hager, who turned out to be a RINO, never fully supported Mark Earley's candidacy for Governor and a large number of his supporters found themselves going over to Mark Warner's camp. It's no surprise Hager was given a nice little appointment by Warner for having helped him win. Gilmore may not be great, but I'd support him over the Rudy McRomney troika of twits.
