Both lose when cow moose collides with helicopter (Revenge of the tranquilized moose!)

A routine flight to tag a cow moose took a bizarre turn this weekend when the tranquilized animal charged the tail section of a hovering helicopter, collided with the rear rotor and brought down the aircraft.

The injured animal was euthanized at the scene.

The incident happened near the southeast town of Gustavus late Saturday afternoon, and baffled officials with the Federal Aviation Administration and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

"I have never personally seen or heard of an injury of this type, caused to an animal by an aircraft," said Doug Larsen, regional supervisor for the Division of Wildlife Conservation. "It just had to be one of those quirky circumstance. Even dealing with bears and goats and moose and wolves, this is pretty unusual and truly a very unique situation."

The chopper should have been a tad higher. 'Course, Bullwinkle could have thrown his pal Rocky into the blades!

Moose are dangerous animals. They are also mean and will intentionally charge and kill you if they get a hankering to do so. One dare not be amused or taken in or underestimate them simply because of their gangly appearance. They are much faster than you...and, as I said, can be very mean. Like a Brahma bull in a pasture.

Makes me wonder about the qualifications this clown has being a regional supervisor.

These animals charge anything that they don't recognize and feel to be a threat. It's not uncommon in this country to see a moose charge a freight train head on.

If they have to tag something, let them go down the west coast and tag Sea Lions with the 30.06.

Here's a humorous story about men and moose.

I had a friend who thought it great sport to pester mooose with a BB gun. He was from the lower 48 and didn't have the respect for these animals we Alaskans who have lived here for years have.

When moose would come near his house - this was in downtown Anchorage - usually at night time, he would run out in his night gown with his BB gun and shoot the moose.

He had to run for his life on numerous occasions. There were times his only recourse was to dive under his car. Picture this, its about 10 or 20 below, you are lying on your belly under your car with a moose with its hackles raised peering under the car at you waiting to stomp you death.

He almost froze to death before the moose finally moved on.
