Former NBA star Tim Hardaway made waves on the airwaves recently by remarking that he hated homosexuals. It became the story du jour the next day, prompting the obligatory posturing and feigned outrage. Pundit Bill OReilly said (Im paraphrasing), We cant have this in America, although at least he was sincere.
Now, I know we should hate the sin but not the sinner, so far be it from me to advocate hatred for anyone (his actions and beliefs are a different matter). But given the Wests increasing embrace of hate crime/hate speech laws, we need to ask ourselves a question. Do we have a right to hate?
The Shill Media wont discuss it, but the aforementioned laws are metastasizing in the supposedly free countries of the West. Ive often written about the case of Mark Harding, a Canadian pastor punished for criticizing Islam. But such examples abound; Bob Unruh writes at WorldNetDaily.com...

Define "hate"?
If hate manifests itself in loss of property or physical harm, than it should be illegal. But not because of hate, per se, but because they are crimes, period.
But words alone should not be a crime, even if they cause some distress.
Yeah. Define it. Cuz all I see is the left trying to define everything that doesn't agree with their ideology as hate.
Hate is fire bombing a Nativity Scene in Cambridge MA.
Merely trying to deny people "speech" or "words" does nothing and most likely increases hate. Hate will never go away, it never has. Ask a mullah.
No, that's destruction of private property.
I agree. Hate is not a crime. It's emotion or thought.
Anyone using the phrase "Hate Speech" as an accusation should be locked up as insane.
"I hate speech."
;^)
Ping for later
And why do only liberals get to define what's hate crime/speech and what isn't? Surely anyone can see their hatred for morality and family values.
Besides, Mr. Hardaway is a basketball player. If they were to be held responsible for their mouthing off, we'd have lost Charles Barkley and Shaquille O'Neal long ago!
Yes.
Words and feelings outside of direct public endangerment should NEVER be illegal.
"Anyone using the phrase "Hate Speech" as an accusation should be locked up as insane."
Yes, of course, but only in a sane world.
"Anyone using the phrase "Hate Speech" as an accusation should be locked up as insane."
Yes, of course, but only in a sane world, will that happen.
I think we have a right to hate the legitimately reprehensible. We have a right to hate Nazis, as an easy example.
Part of the reason people are so hateful anymore is because they are not able to express theirselves with words. Sometimes they resort to actions which are far worse. At least when you express yourself, people get to make a decision about where you are coming from.
LMAO!
Read Matthew 23. Jesus calls the Pharisees serpents, vipers, hypocrites, thieves and murderers, subject to hell and damnation.
There are laws to address the illegal ACTIONS of people who injure another due to hate. It was wrong to create additional laws based on "hate"; that is what variations in sentencing are all about - the details of the crime.
This is a progression toward the elimination of free speech in the USA.
(ahem)
All thought processes are polarized ... there is no black unless there is white ... no plus without minus, no good without bad ... etc.
If we take away one of the components to the thought process ... individual thought cannot occur, thus ... if an answer is supplied (by whomever), that becomes the answer by default.
And you can hear the arguers being adamant in their passion ... because they really have thought this through! when in fact, the answer was inputted.
It's a clever twist on, "Tell a lie long enough and it becomes truth"
Right...."hate" is a FEELING....so if we're going to tell people they cannot hate....then we can tell them they cannot "love," "like".....etc.
Good point, knarf. You can move the ball down the court, but you can't set and shoot.
But in Liberalworld, it's bad to hate gays, but ok to hate Christians.
The premise of "hate" withing the bounds of "lib speak" is invalid. Please restate the question.
Hate is the Knights of Columbus protesting the fire bombing of a Nativity Scene in Cambridge MA?
Hate is teaching one's children that it's the calling of their lives to blow themselves up to kill Jews.
Hate is hacking the heads off innocent people while claiming it's being done in the name of God.
Hate is a so-called religion whose 'holy book' calls for the murder of those who don't convert to it.
Need I go on?

Freedom is never in so much peril as when Congress is in session!
I hate it when some jacka** tailgates me.
I also hate hypocritical libs that:
hate bush,
hate this country,
hate Christians(ban the Bible),
hate families(no fault divorce & family court),
hate babies(abortions),
hate children(gay indoctrination & public schools), and
hate people(global warming).
Whew!
That's Maher, isn't it? I missed this; what caused such a gentle reaction on this mild-mannered (gag) talk show host's part?
I wouldn't exactly say that we have a "right" to hate. I'm going to include hating along with being hungry or getting sleepy or being happy or sad or loving or experiencing frustration. Hate is something that just happens as part of the human experience.
"Hate crime" laws are a way to up the ante on crimes against those in "protected classes." It is a corruption of the concept of law because identical crimes against those not in protected classes are considered lacking the same seriousness.
"Hate speech" is just a bludgeon used by one group of people to silence those outside that group. That disturbs me more than the idea of hate crimes does, and we have seen how easily it's been abused, from the Canadian pastor who is in jail for "criticizing" Islam, to the Mormon girl who responded to those who were picking on her (because of her religion) with "That's so gay." As far as I know, the kids picking on her have not been accused of hate speech.
If we want to have an authoritarian society, as opposed to a free one, this is the path to take.
America, Apple-Pie, God ?? ..any number of things, including Dick Cheney.
I see HBO's still runs his show. ..but I don't watch it.
I am always coming from where I've been; but since I never go anywhere, I really never come.
Psalm 139:19-22 Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, ye bloody men. For they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take thy name in vain. Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee? I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies.
I hate the hate police.
