2005 photograph.

CHICAGO, March 5 — The Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., senior pastor of the popular Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago and spiritual mentor to Senator Barack Obama, thought he knew what he would be doing on Feb. 10, the day of Senator Obama’s presidential announcement.

After all, back in January, Mr. Obama had asked Mr. Wright if he would begin the event by delivering a public invocation.

But Mr. Wright said Mr. Obama called him the night before the Feb. 10 announcement and rescinded the invitation to give the invocation.

“Fifteen minutes before Shabbos I get a call from Barack,” Mr. Wright said in an interview on Monday, recalling that he was at an interfaith conference at the time. “One of his members had talked him into uninviting me,” Mr. Wright said, referring to Mr. Obama’s campaign advisers.

Some black leaders are questioning Mr. Obama’s decision to distance his campaign from Mr. Wright because of the campaign’s apparent fear of criticism over Mr. Wright’s teachings, which some say are overly Afrocentric to the point of excluding whites. snip...

“When his enemies find out that in 1984 I went to Tripoli” to visit Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, Mr. Wright recalled, “with Farrakhan, a lot of his Jewish support will dry up quicker than a snowball in hell.” Mr. Wright added that his trip implied no endorsement of either Louis Farrakhan’s views or Qaddafi’s.

Mr. Wright said that in the phone conversation in which Mr. Obama disinvited him from a role in the announcement, Mr. Obama cited an article in Rolling Stone, “The Radical Roots of Barack Obama.”

Would someone named Hillary have something to do with the Slimes printing this story? Isn't the Times the official Clinton newspaper of record?

Links to the Church and Obama's friends Iraq quiz in post 9. I'd distance myself too, until I was elected. Sounds like Rev. Wright might make a fine Secretary of State.

Why is Obama ashamed to acknowledge his "religion"?

Either his church has problems (some consider it a racist organization), or he is not a true believer.

Perhaps both.

IMO you are reading this wrong. This is Obama's church, his bona fides as a Christian. It is also much more like a far-left, Bush-bashibg, hate-America PAC than it is a Christian congregation. One viewing of their televised services proves this in twenty foot neon letters.

There is also the 'racist' aspect but considering that they are a Black organization whose stated mission is the betterment of 'their' community no one should be surprised or even offended that their web message is replete with 'afro-centric' verbiage.

"Would someone named Hillary have something to do with the Slimes printing this story? Isn't the Times the official Clinton newspaper of record?"

Could it be that the writer of this article, Jodi Kantor, is the offspring of Mickey Kantor, big wheel in the Clinton administration and partner in former democrat national party chairman Chuck Manatt's law firm?

You may very well be correct, but also please note that Kantor is a fairly common Jewish name.

You would distance yourself from a church that promotes the Black Value System -- clearly a racist philosophy.

After you read the Black Value System, substitute the word "Black" for "White" to appreciate the racism. If the average white church posted such a value system on their website, Jess and Al would have 5,000 protestors and all the media out front.

On its website, Trinity describes itself as a "congregation which is Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian.  Our roots in the Black religious experience and tradition are deep, lasting and permanent.  We are an African people, and remain "true to our native land," the mother continent, the cradle of civilization."

Trinity has a non-negotiable commitment to Africa, is committed to the historical education of African people in diaspora and committed to liberation, restoration, and economic parity."

Trinity is very anti-Israel and supports divestment.

At the UCC General Synod in 2005, the denomination adopted a resolution calling for “equal marriage rights for all,” regardless of gender.  This includes homosexuals and transgendered individuals.

On October 29, 2006, Dallas's Cathedral of Hope, known as the “world’s largest gay church,” was accepted into the UCC.
