I have disliked Dick Vitale for a long time and always thanked God for whoever invented the mute button when he appeared on TV. He is a pompous, egotistical jerk who would make a better barker at a carnival than sportscaster.
I've now upgraded him to "despised" because of his spilling of information told to him in confidence during a discussion with coach Billy Donovan. Never mind whether he knew he was on the air or not.
"Confidential" means exactly that. Vitale should have kept his mouth shut, period.
CLIFF HARRISON
Winter Haven
Don't kill me.
Dick Vitale is a whole lot better that Billy Packer, who obviously misspells his last name.
Dick, meet Cliff.
Cliff, meet Dick.
Dick, Cliff is from Winter Haven and does not like you very much.
I hear he has an opinion on Rudy as well, but darn if I know what it is.
Vitale later said he was kidding and Donovan denied the statement so that's where it stands.
LOL
"I'm tellin' ya...she's CIA, BABY!"
He was waiting on hold to do a phone interview on a radio show. He was having a conversation with somebody at the restaurant he was in while he waited. The radio station picked up the PRIVATE conversation over the cell phone and ran it on the air w/o telling him he was on the air.
The media violates more peoples' privacy in one average day in America than the government probably has in the decade.
Either that, or they are certifiable.
Dick Vitale was on the Sports Animal (AM990) in Knoxville as a guest for a call-in show called the News Sentinel Roundtable. He was on hold while waiting to be introduced on the program when he became distracted. He was at a restaurant in Florida talking with someone else shooting his mouth off about what Donovan (the FL mens BB coach) told him in confidence about Al Horford in comparison to Joakim Noah. Unknown to him, at just that time, the News Sentinel radio hosts tried to introduce him live, on the air, to talk about the upcoming TN-FL game the next day. Dickie V did not know that they could hear him. The entire Sports Animal audience could hear him. They never could get his attention and had to go to a break. When they finally got him on the line, he denied he ever said that. Then, he found out that they had indeed inadvertantly broadcast his conversation with the unknown person at the restaurant. He called back and said he was just "joking." It was pathetic.
Agree, Packer is horrible.
Once upon a time, I was interviewed for a job by Billy Packer. I am delighted to report that, at the time, I had no idea who Billy Packer was. I thought he was a bit of a sluggo.
As for Dick Vitale, well, all you need to know about Dick you can learn just by listening to him. The good news is this: What he does for a living just doesn't matter much.
Used to love Packer...when McGuire was there to mock him.
Other than that Packer is useless. Vitale is just incredibly annoying.
Seems as if neither multi-tasking nor honesty are Mr. Vitale's forte.
So who outplayed whom in the actual game?
I can't stand either Packer or Vitale. Packer hates any team that's not in his beloved ACC. Vitale is just a waste of broadcast air. Hot air.
Actually, the writer well surmises my feelings about Ed Asner. Except I feel about a thousand times more strong about Asner. In fact, my heart burns with a rage hotter than one thousand suns.
And there's no mitigating factors either.

If what I just wrote made you sad or angry,
it was probably just a joke.
Those were the good old days, indeed. Maguiore would cap on Packer and Packer wouldn't even realize it.
Here is a video of Johnny Orr telling off Dick Vitale on Selection Sunday. Classic.

And mine about Bruce Boxleitner.
Bruce Boxleitner?
Never got over that Melissa Gilbert thing?
If you're on the phone to a radio station no sound you make is private. And really at the volume Dicky V screams (I've never actually seen him talk like a normal person, don't think he's capable of it) no conversation he's in is private, deaf people 2 miles away can hear every word he says.
Simple rule to avoid Dicky-V - If Duke is doing well(most of the time), and Duke is on a network that Dicky-V works for, then don't watch the game. This will help you miss over 50% of his air time.
Geez....I thought I was the only one in TVland who couldn't stand Ed Asner! I would love to be alone with that dip for 5 minutes as I would take great pleasure in opening a gigantic can of "whupass" on him. If we ever needed a poster boy to point out what's wrong with the American media and a few of the people, Asner is my prime candidate.
I really enjoy watching NCAA basketball on TV, but when Dick Vitale is the commentator, I can hardly stand it. I always end up turning the volume way down because his voice grates on my last nerve. The only reason I don't mute it all together is because the TV transcribes what he's saying.
And, you know what, none of these people on ESPN EVER pull for LSU!
I also say thanks for the MUTE button, windbag
Class act...
GREAT play by play man....
Dude. She is awesome. Everytime I accidentally come across some "Lifetime" movie she is in I am locked on target.
I certainly agree with most of our freepers that Packer and Vitale are obnoxious, pompous and annoying. Are they put on to annoy us. That Bobby Knight wants Vitale in the Hall of Fame is ridiculous unless he is thinking of adifferent Hall of Fame.
Al McQuire was the best ever. Watching basketball hasn't been the same without him.
I'm so old I remember going down to UDet (now UDM) to watch Dick coach. I enjoy the guy, obviously I'm a small minority here, LOL
It's hillarious the way UNC fans adore Vitale because he is such a UNC suckup. They can't stand anyone who is not completely pro-UNC and by the way I am a UNC fan.

Horford had a better game.
Noah had been stinking up the joint on the Gators recent skid. But he looked much more fired up in the Kentucky game.
I think the Gators were tired, and once they had the SEC regular season title wrapped, they lost some of their fire, and it clearly showed.
But it's coming back now, and the Dickie V incident may fire up Noah even more. That is bad news for Florida's opponents in the tournament.
I was at the UT-FL game with a seat 7 rows up. Noah looked pretty fired up for the UT game. He should have been after his comments concerning Lofton not playing for the game at FL. Noah shouldn't call out another team and then not be fired up to play them.
No, I think they were pretty fired up to play UT, but they got a little shell-shocked at how effective UT can beat an opponent down when both Lofton and Smith are hitting the 3 ball. Of course, if they aren't hitting UT becomes pretty average. But they were on that night.
