Yeah. He's to the left of Bush.

That same sight gives Bush a more conservative rating than Fred Thompson.

That's not encouraging.

But....he was on TV!

To me, absolutely nothing. My husband is 20 years older than me! I was directing my questioning to those here at FR who demand moral purity from anyone running with an R next to their name.

It's not anything like that other intern program.

Unless that's what you're into.

This guy's your worst nightmare, EV; the rational people on this forum will get behind this guy and you and your creepy little friends won't be able to bully them:

"Fred Thompson is said to be considering a run for the presidency. Conservatives starved for another Reagan could do much worse. He is disarming and down to earth. His experience in the limelight has given him a perfect sense of timing. But most of all, he is experienced in public policy and brings to it a conservative worldview. He is pro-life, pro-family, pro-traditional marriage, pro-Second Amendment and pro-free enterprise."

I have no opinion of Thompson one way or another, but for all the moral perfectionists here at FR, I must tell them that he is divorced..

Source on divorced? I read he was widowed.

"But he is a decent man with good qualities; I would vote for him were he the Republican nominee. However, I personally would prefer someone who will go for the kill."

The "Go for the kill" species seems to missing from the Republican gene pool. Just watch any dust-up btwn Pubs and Rats. The Rats play by a different set of rules and, for some reason, the Pubs just throw their chests out as if to say "bet you can't get this."

Trying to understand this just befuddles me.

Well, well, if it isn't the little boy who cried wolf.

Your problem, EV, is that you've shot your wad on Rudy and Romney.

When you come on here trashing Thompson, it's only going to prove once and for all what everybody already knows: you're a paid operative that's here to divide the GOP.

The columnist you linked has it wrong.

Can you show me where Fred Thompson has ever called himself anything but pro-choice?

When he was a Senator, and when he ran for office, every news article you can find calls him "pro-choice."

Or has he pulled a Romney?

FR is still pro-life and against the trashing of the First Amendment, Howlin. Thompson fails on both points.

The electoral model Bush used to win in 2000 and 2004, we had better plan on branching out from that.

I keep saying the same thing. Any candidate whose best hope is to defend the 2000 or 2004 electoral map isn't going to win. Things could change on the political front, Iraq might be much closer to the promised end, but even with that, I don't see Republicans winning if the Democrats can take their blue states to the bank early and use their money to pick off a couple of red states.

For what its worth, Fred Thompson was one of ten Republican Senators to vote Bill Clinton not guilty of perjury in his impeachment trial.
He did vote Clinton guilty on Obstruction of Justice.

What I'm hoping is that they'll support an AmishDude candidacy. I will "get tough" with Democrats like they want. I'll round them up and put them all together in a place where they will be like zombies, their minds rotting from atrophy in the mind-numbing dullness so as to destroy any semblance of reason or sanity.

And when they're finished with law school, I'll put them to work on the AmishDude statue.

Google "Fred Thompson" and "pro-choice." You'll get hundreds of references to the former Senator as a pro-abort, notwithstanding a few good votes that they'll tout from here to kingdom come.

It's dated July 2006, so maybe he's clarified his views since then.

7/06/00 6:20 p.m.
Thompson's Turn
Senator Thompson's office disputes NR.

By Ramesh Ponnuru, NR senior editor

The latest issue of NR includes a rundown of possible Bush running mates. In passing, it mentions that Senator Fred Thompson, the Tennessee Republican, has the drawback of being pro-choice. His office called today to say that Thompson is actually pro-life.

Thompson has certainly voted with pro-lifers almost all the time. The National Right to Life Committee counts votes for John McCain-style campaign-finance reform, which Thompson supports, as anti-pro-life votes, but otherwise he's been solid. The senator voted against the Harkin amendment, which put the Senate on record favoring Roe v. Wade. But when Thompson ran for Senate in 1994, he did so as a supporter of legal abortion, as several press clips from the time pointed out. NR has also obtained a copy of a letter Thompson sent to a constituent in 1997, which notes that Thompson supports various restrictions on abortion but also includes the line, "I believe that government should not interfere with individual convictions and actions in this area."

The upshot: Thompson is an ally of pro-lifers in all the actual fights that come up, but he's not one of them on the core issue. Unless, that is, he has changed his mind, as suggested by his current self-description as a pro-lifer. In that case, NR would be more than happy to print a corretion.
