Sorry but this is a huge misstep.

I felt bad for the Bush girls during the media bombardment they endured for underage drinking. I mean c'mon, what college freshman to senior doesn't engage in underage drinking? I thought it was a witch hunt and anything to make Bush look bad.

However she asked for this criticism and it is warranted. Her comparisons are way off base and the hubis she exibits is as narcissitic as any liberal championing an issue.

She should be skewered for her self-serving, self-important PC rants. End of story.

"..Presidential twin daughter Jenna Bush is publishing a new book she wants your young kids to read, and--surprise!--its heroine is a teen single mother with AIDS. So much for your kids having a childhood....

[snip]...And Bush has the audacity to tell USA Today that she envisions her teen-single-mother-with-AIDS book as having the same influence as Anne Frank's The Diary of Anne Frank."

Never consider listening to a Presidential offspring until they are over forty.

If these girls make it, they'll be doing well. Being the daughter of a president and the granddaughter of another president isn't easy, not to speak of great granddaughter of Prescott Bush. Just look at Chelsea, or all those junior Kennedys.

Actually Margaret Truman made it--by becoming first an outspoken, independent woman, and then a successful writer of detective fiction.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Bush girls make it, after a certain amount of trying things out first.

Someone posted this comment on the Schlussel site:

After reading all that, I rushed to the bathroom and puked. That's how sickening it is.

Yeah, I'm sure the person actually, really puked. Sheesh, I hate this kind of hyperbole. Then again, maybe the person really did puke...in which case I'd suggest a therapist.

I think the author makes some valid points. You can sympathize with tragedy even when largely self-inflicted. But it is in no way comparable to the Holocaust. No way! That's ridiculous. And anyway, how many HIV positive teens are in the schools? How many of them are excluded for reasons other than medical reasons? It's just a lame premise that, like everyone these days, assumes everyone will live forever except people with HIV.

Pay taxes, particularly. I have a 23 year old son who recently informed me that I was right on a lot of things, and he has always thought of himself as a liberal, but didn't realize how many conservatives views he held at the core level. I knew of course, but was pleased to see that he realized it on his own. He finally found out what being liberal really means, and doesn't identify with them at all. My feeling is, he was taught to think he was in school. Now that he is out, on his own, and paying taxes etc, he realizes the lie that liberalism is.

Why would you feel sorry for them or make apologies for them?

Pretending for a moment that it was only underage drinking, they brought a lot of shame to their family.

There are plenty of us who raise our kids NOT to pull the kind of crap they did.

Well! I see Debbie is heavily into outrage.

I understand her concern, but her criticism is a mite strong.

By the way, it sounds like a pretty mundane book.

The Whitman-Walker Clinic in DC reports that the District has a higher percentage of HIV positive adults than do 24 sub-Saharan countries. That's on a poster in the subway system.

Therefore, Jenna's book is not exactly a revelation.

I'm sure she meant well.

BTW, I didn't see Chelsea Clinton teaching in DC Schools. Which, btw, are nightmares, for the most part. Good on you for that, Jenna!

I think Debbie is not ready for prime time, unfortunately this hit piece on this young woman gives evidence of a fatal flaw in Debbie's character.

When you see this kind of purple faced anger explode at an innocent, a simple apology won't cover it up.

This is stunningly ugly and angry, it is way out of proportion, and to put in those photographs is outrageous.

I think most normal people do. Well-adjusted people grow out of it.

I myself played with liberalism in my 20s and most conservatives I know today did the same.

I belonged to a group called Arms Race Concern when I was in my late teens/early 20s.

I often wonder how many folks around here would want the exploits of their twenties excessively photographed, thoroughly analyzed and commented on by folks with ulterior motives. Some could hold up under that kind of scrutiny. Most could not.

I'm over forty, live a very mundane, do the right thing best I can kind of life and there would STILL be plenty of fodder for anyone seeking to use me as an example.

I think her article was right on. You are only upset because it's a spawn of Bush she attacked. If this were Chelsea or Amy Carter, you'd be right there with her. Do you think it's a good thing to have yet another kids book about single mothers who have underage sex and kids and get AIDS? Do you think it's a good thing that this drunken airhead compares her book about a promiscuous South American to the Holocaust?

If anyone's gone off the deep end, it's the commenters who have a problem with Schlusel's column and have such an absurd display of double standards.

Keep in mind that the press is reporting this to put it in the worst light possible for the Whitehouse. Who knows what she actually said, or whether the reporter was the one who brought up the Anne Frank comparison and Jenna was merely responding.

The media's focus is to embarass President Bush by making his daughter look like a liberal.

DON'T FALL FOR IT!

FWIW, I've always thought that the behavior of Presidential children and other tangential family members is pretty much immaterial. There is enough fodder for outrage just talking about the policies of Jimmy or antics of Bill...why waste time grousing about Chelsea, Amy or Billy and Roger who have no effect on any policy that affects me in the slightest?

That parallel universe is becoming more crowded by the day.

Jenna's point was well made. The same people who read Ann Frank may very well read this book.

There is no indication at all that Jenna was comparing the plight of the two girls.

These Bush girls have done more public service since graduating college than a good many of the holier than thou posters on FR.

18 venomous reply posts, including yours, and nobody bothers recognizing the fact that they are reacting to the words of the article author, not Jenna Bush's.

Author - "And Bush has the audacity to tell USA Today that she envisions her teen-single-mother-with-AIDS book as having the same influence as Anne Frank's The Diary of Anne Frank. "

Jenna Bush - "...hopes her book will have some of the influence of two books about girls caught up in the Holocaust: Lois Lowry's novel Number the Stars and Anne Frank's The Diary of Anne Frank."

There is a world of difference between "the same", a bold objective and "some", a modest objective.

I guess in the quest to belittle someone, details don't matter.

If she's gonna promote a book based on the sole fact that her dad is president then anything she says about the book or that is in the book is fair game. And I never thought I'd say this, but this gives me new respect for Chelsea, who is not as trashy as this woman. Haven't ever seen any drunken or underwear changing pix of her. And she didn't write a book like that and compare herself to Anne Frank. This Bush twin is a total ditz and a piece of garbage. And to think her mother was a librarian.

It is completely possible this is a morality tale designed to help girls make a better life for themselves through better choices. A point that seems to be completely glossed over here.
