A day in the life of President Bush (3/10/07): photos from Uruguay & news

PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: President and Mrs. Bush visited Uruguay today where they had lunch with that country's president and other dignitaries. GWB and the Uruguayan leader held trade talks before participating in a joint press conference. The following article presents a summary of President Bush's visit:

Bush talks trade in Uruguay as Chavez stokes protests
CNN.com, World, POSTED: 2:07 p.m. EST, March 10, 2007

ANCHORENA PARK, Uruguay (AP) -- President George W. Bush launched talks Saturday with Uruguayan President Tabare Vazquez focused on expanding trade with this tiny coastal nation.

It was the second stop on a five-country Latin American trip shadowed by taunts from Venezuela's Hugo Chavez that Bush ignored. The leftist firebrand is answering the president's trek with jeers of "Gringo go home."

On a cloudy, windy day, Bush boarded his helicopter along the coastline of the broad Plate River for the nearly one-hour trip to Estancia Anchorena, a facility in a national park that serves as this nation's equivalent to the U.S. presidential retreat at Camp David, Maryland.

Asked at a news conference Friday in Brazil whether his trip counters Chavez's influence in the region or stokes the populist leader's support, Bush refrained from even naming his nemesis.

"I bring the goodwill of the United States to South America and Central America. That's why I'm here," said Bush, who also is visiting Colombia, Guatemala and Mexico.

"I don't think America gets enough credit for trying to help improve people's lives. And so my trip is to explain, as clearly as I can, that our nation is generous and compassionate," he said.

In the meantime, on the other side of the world, U.S. and Iranian diplomats met face-to-face during a conference in Baghdad to discuss stablizing Iraq. Participants at the talks included all of Iraq's neighbors — Iran, Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Kuwait — as well as the U.S., Russia, France, Britain, China, Bahrain, Egypt, the U.N., the Organization of the Islamic Conference and the Arab League.

U.S., Iran trade barbs in direct talks
By SCHEHEREZADE FARAMARZI and QASSIM ABDUL-ZAHRA, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 5 minutes ago

BAGHDAD - In their first direct talks since the Iraq war began, U.S. and Iranian envoys traded harsh words and blamed each other for the country's crisis Saturday at a one-day international conference that some hoped would help end their 27-year diplomatic freeze. Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki opened the conference with an appeal for all participants to help ease his country's plight and prevent the violent conflict here from spilling over into the entire Middle East.

But the conference underscored the wide gulf between American and Iranian views over the nature of the crisis and the ways to end it.

During the talks, U.S. envoy David Satterfield pointed to his briefcase which he said contained documents proving Iran was arming Shiite Muslim militias in Iraq.

PHOTO OF THE DAY: During the news conference with the Uruguayan president, GWB's ear piece (for the translation) fell out and he fumbled with it for a moment before getting it back in place. His expression is priceless.

The President couldn't wait to ditch that earpiece at the end of the press conference. Reminds me of his rocky relationship with umbrellas. :)

President Bush waves to well-wishers at the airport. The President's lead agent can be seen indistinctly in the background. He's the same man GWB rescued from the security forces in famous incident in Chile.

Marine One, with President Bush on board, hovers above special security personnel as GWB returns to Montevideo from the presidential retreat in Anchorena.

The President steps off Marine One.

Then, while walking along the coast from Marine One to where he and the First Lady are staying, the President put his coat on. Although it's summer in South America, it was a windy day and the location is on the Atlantic coast. Uruguay is a small nation between Brazil and Argentina on the Atlantic coast of South America.

Uruguayan First Lady Maria Auxiliadora Delgado and Mrs. Bush during a visit to Colonia del Sacramento.

Colonia del Sacramento was the only Portuguese settlement along the Rio de la Plata. Founded as Nova Colonia do Sacramento in 1680 by Manuel de Lobo, it was the focus of struggle between the Spanish and Portuguese over control of the area. For years it operated as a contraband port, evading the strictures imposed on trade by the Spanish crown. Today it is a resort city, a port, and the trade center for a rich agricultural region.

Built in the Portuguese style of houses and with cobblestoned streets, the historic portion of Colonia is reminiscent of old Lisbon. Winding streets and colorful houses are laid out in a pattern different from Spanish colonial cities, and it is a delight to explore. The historic quarter, Barrío Historico, is located on a small peninsula jutting out into the river.

Colonia del Sacramento is across the mouth of the Rio de la Plata River from Buenos Aires, and is the main water thoroughfare for visitors from Argentina to access any part of Uruguay. Many travelers stop to enjoy the excellent restaurants, arts and craft shops, museumsm and a large yacht harbor.

This should have been in Post #20. I've believed for some time that the reason we don't get as much "week ahead" info and domestic weekend pics is due to security concerns. This photo pretty much says it all.
