I think you nailed it.

Like foley, the MSM KNEW all the details. They even had pictures of Foley in public openly with his live in sex partner. They KNEW he was chasing pages. Newspapers like the Miami Herald kept quiet to preserve access.

SO now we have a Guiliani with multiple skeletons and a MSM which wants to preserve access. It is a deal with the devil with a catch in the end.

What a blanket statement.

Remember what the American Voter reacts to in these times:

No balding white man is going to win the Presidency over Hillary or Obama (scratch Giuliani and Thompson).

No old-looking white man is going to win the Presidency over Hillary or Obama (scratch McCain and Hunter).

No mean-looking white man is going to win the Presidency over Hillary or Obama (scratch Gingrich, Gilmore, Huckabee, and Paul).

The only Republican candidates who can appeal to a sufficient number of shallow, superficial American Swing Voters are Mitt Romney and the strangely quiet Colin Powell (Europe's favorite American). If one of them isn't the nominee, a Democrat will win in 2008.

Which ultimately might not be a bad thing. The next President is going to have to answer for a real-estate-equity-driven Depression, an act of nuclear terrorism on American soil, tax increases to fund swelling entitlement payments, the rest of Mexico setting up housekeeping on American soil, and China's forcible re-annexation of Taiwan. By 2012, the Mitt Romney and/or Jeb Bush "Return to Sanity" ticket is going to look mighty appealing. ;)

It was a great Reagan attribute.

The story has a number of blanket statements as well.

I have no doubt it will be coming. They will hang on to the info to explode at the time it will discombobulate us the most.

The thought makes me shudder, and people are playing into it.

Well, I won't. Its far better, since it is before the primaries, to find our man. One that is acceptable to most of us and has less negative baggage.

What many Rudyguys are missing, is that there are many people out there that aren't overly religious, that hate homosexuality, cross dressing, and they don't want their firearms or the babies in jeopardy.

I know guys that haven't yet been treated to some of those Rudy photos. Those photos alone would be a big negative.

"After all, it’s highly unlikely that the meanness and nastiness will be directed at me personally"

Rudy is a big-time supporter of banning "assault weapons." Rudy did not allow possession of these firearms in NYC.

I own a number of these type of firearms.

If Rudy becomes president will Rudy's "meanness and nastiness be directed at me personally." (?!)

Derbyshire is a very smart cookie. I had analyzed it slightly differently, that Rudy "gets things done" rather than merely "talking in slogans." But Derbyshire is right that the in-your-face, you-can't-stop-me qualities of Rudy are the reason why he was able to defeat the "public service" unions, turn around the culture of crime, etc.

D is also right that Hillary! has a similar, demanding personality. However, she lies about what she will do if she gets her hand on the Presidency, her failure to socialize health care is an indicator of where she wants to push the nation.

Rudy Guiliani supports your second amendment right to go hunting. Provided you buy a hunting license, hunt only during certain times of the year the evirowacks allow hunting to happen. (AND pay a per bullet tax of 1000% of cost AND a perfired bullet tax for an evirowacko impact cleanup fee)

(sarcasm off)

I agree that Rudy is no Reagan, but they are similar in some respects.

Agree with his posits or not, Derbyshire is one helluva writer.

In my opinion, National Review (magazine and on-line) has assembled the best stable of political/cultural columnists and critics since the assemblage of fiction-writing contributors to the old Saturday Evening Post.

We put Rudy up, the MSMs and the Dems will make the most ugly facts about Rudy ever more ugly. The MSMs are too quiet at this time on Rudy and his history, they are...waiting.

I don't think so, for two reasons.

The first is the product. Rudy's not a Boy Scout. He's an SOB. He's not President Bush, promising a new tone, delivering flowery, religious themed speeches, or to be a 'uniter'. People understand the difference. While it would be hypocritical of an arch social conservative (like Newt) to have a shady past, the context fits for an SOB, and most people won't care.

Remember, Rudy's not just an SOB. He's a heavyweight level SOB with a long track record. His credentials are naturally going to include some dirt, as he's got the kind of tough guy personality that people see as consistent with it.

(I know that many FReepers and the chuch lady corps will throw an epileptic fit, but the average voter will probably not be overly concerned. In 2008, it'll be consistency and toughness they're looking for in a candidate, not sainthood.)

Second, odds are that Hillary will take the nomination. She has a lot of baggage that works against her. Left unexamined, it earns her some sympathy points. Dragging it out into the light will burn her as badly as does Rudy's. So, she might opt to go after his past, but two can play at that game.

There are certainly more differences than there are similarities!
