Global warming story hits critical mass (We're all gonna die!!)
Summit Daily News (Colorado) ^ | March 13, 2007 | Bob Berwyn

KEYSTONE — Global warming is the hottest story of our time, and it will get even bigger as the full implications of melting ice caps and rising sea levels percolate through the media pipeline and into general public awareness, a panel of journalists said last weekend during the American Bar Association's environmental law conference.

The discussion was focused on how the media has covered the story and whether or not public perception of global warming has changed in recent months and years. Among the questions the panelists tried to answer is why it has taken so long for the story to reach critical mass.

Most of the panelists credited Al Gore's documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth," with helping to generate attention.

A draft version of the [IPCC] report says that, within a few decades, hundreds of millions of people will face water shortages, while tens of millions will be flooded out of their homes. Tropical diseases like malaria will spread, pests like fire ants will thrive and by 2050, polar bears will mostly be found in zoos. By 2080, hundreds of millions of people could face starvation, according to the IPCC draft report.

And when this doesn't happen, even a fraction of this wild claim? (Why am I even asking this; being a liberal means never having to explain yourself).

Maybe the public are rubes living in places like Albany where the mean temperature has been dropping.

I remember when Clinton has all these weather folks in DC for a big sell the Global Warming stick. This is on-going for many years.

Can anyone calculate the carbon emissions generated by transporting these panelists to a Colorado ski resort and then pampering these do-nothings in an exclusive lodge. There must have been a lot of anguish in the room about the impending global warming cataclysm between the servings of frois de grois and rack of lamb.

Possibly because this one is an honest graph?

Just a thought.

Remember Teapot Dome? That scandal ran for forty years, maybe more. This is much bigger. This scandal will have repercussions for half a century only because our attention span as news consumers is much shorter these days.

The arctic has been completely ice-free in the past, which caused the polar bears to go extinct. Luckily their numbers recovered when the ice came back. </sarc>

Report Indicates Global Warming May Be Worse than We Think

Two new reports indicate that the global warming problem may be more widespread than heretofore thought. One report from National Geographic News asserts that temperatures on both Earth and Mars have been rising. Data from NASA’s Mars Global Surveyor and Odyssey mission in 2005 disclosed that the carbon dioxide "ice caps” near Mars’ south pole are shrinking.

The other report indicates that cosmic rays from exploded stars are decreasing. This is causing fewer clouds to form and allowing more sunlight to hit the planet, raising temperatures.

Former vice-president and internationally acclaimed climate expert, Al Gore, cited the reports as further evidence in support of drastic action aimed at cooling the planet. “It was bad enough when just the Earth was affected, but now it looks like the entire solar system may be in danger,” Gore proclaimed. “There is no time to lose. We must act before it is too late.”

Gore suggested that a “global climate czar” be appointed from among a list of persons nominated for both an Academy Award and Nobel Prize for work on climate change. “We need someone with the authority to brush aside the barriers to immediate action,” Gore said. “We can’t afford to allow a nostalgic reverence for archaic notions of property rights and individual freedom to be used to block the steps necessary to save the Earth. Everything and everyone must be strictly controlled if we want there to be a planet here for our grandchildren.”

Could possbly be because it is a temperature history for Albany, New York, as opposed to the few places on the earth where temperture trends happen to be positive enough to make a global index look positive.

click yer clicker thang here >>> Data @ NASA GISS Surface Temperature Analysis Maps

All depends on the temperature datasets used and how you weight/adjust them constructing an index. [ssspt, just ignore that little man behind the curtain]
