San Francisco Wants US Department of Peace

By unanimous vote the San Francisco Board of Supervisors endorses legislation to establish a U.S. Department of Peace and Nonviolence

San Francisco , CA. - San Francisco joined the Bay Area cities of Berkeley, Oakland, Palo Alto and San Jose yesterday when its Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a resolution endorsing creation of a cabinet-level U.S. Department of Peace and Nonviolence. By doing so, this sixth-largest metropolitan area in the country (encompassing some 5.4 million residents) joined the ranks of 20 cities voicing support for HR 808, legislation that focuses on innovative and proactive approaches to violence prevention.

"We have to remind elected officials of all parties that peace is patriotic...." said HR 808 co-sponsor Rep. Barbara Lee after the bill was reintroduced in Congress on February 5 th. "If we had a Department of Peace, we'd be dealing in a real way with gun violence, and domestic violence, child abuse, elder abuse, and all the awful violence that's taking place because of the cutbacks of funding and disinvestment in the American people. In the words of the great warrior for peace Dr. Martin Luther King, peace is not just the absence of tension, it is the presence of justice. A Department of Peace would embody that ideal."

Didn't I read last week that SF was asking the U.S. Navy to help them secure some land for their football stadium?

Now, if I was the Navy Secretary I would tell them to ..... up a rope. That sounds like a job for the Department of Peace.

They have so gerrymandered the election districts that only death and disease among them will be the hope for equality for conservatives.

Actaully I'll trade em. they can have their useless "Department of Peace". If we can get back the "War Department" and dump the "Defense Department". We had a much better batting average with the War Department.

Someone should tell that that SAC's motto used to be: Peace is our Profession. To have peace, one must be prepared for war. This wisdom is thousands of years old, but what do these bozos care about wisdom?
