Tenn. mine enriched Gore, scarred land

More hypocrisy exposed on the part of this lying huckster...

Al Gore has profited from zinc mining that has released millions of pounds of potentially toxic substances near his farmstead, but there is no evidence the mine has caused serious damage to the environment in the area or threatened the health of his neighbors.

Two massive white mountains of leftover rock waste are evidence of three decades of mining that earned Gore more than $500,000 in royalty payments for the mineral rights to his property.

Even Gore noted in his letter that, according to Scorecard, “pollution releases from the mine in 2002 placed it among the ‘dirtiest/worst facilities’ in the U.S.”

That said, it's not clear that Gore himself has done anything wrong, though he's clearly made money from a project that's pretty environmentally unfriendly. But this will add to the perception that Gore's green talk is hypocritical, I suspect. As I've noted below, if you adopt a quasi-messianic posture, people will judge your actions very differently than if you do not.

Just as leftists can purchase "carbon credits", and feel good about their conspicuous consumption, someone as important as Al Gore should be allowed to purchase "pollution credits".

It seems everyone has forgotten this one about Al.

http://www.corpwatch.org/article.php?id=468

[snip]Occidental's planned drilling of the Elk Hills doesn't only threaten the memory of the Kitanemuk [Indian tribe}. Environmentalists say a rare species of fox, lizard and the kangaroo rat would also be threatened by Oxy's plans. A lawsuit has been filed under the Endangered Species Act. But none of that has given pause to Occidental or the politician who helped engineer the sale of the drilling rights to the federally-owned Elk Hills. That politician is Al Gore.

Gore recommended that the Elk Hills be sold as part of his 1995 "Reinventing Government" National Performance Review program. Gore-confidant (and former campaign manager) Tony Cohelo served on the board of directors of the private company hired to assess the sale's environmental consequences. The sale was a windfall for Oxy. Within weeks of the announced purchase Occidental stock rose ten percent.

That was good news for Gore. Despite controversy over Dick Cheney's plans to keep stock options if elected, most Americans don't know that we already have a vice president with oil company stocks. Before the Elk Hills sale, Al Gore controlled between $250,000-$500,000 of Occidental stock (he is executor of a trust that he says goes only to his mother, but will revert to him upon her death). After the sale, Gore began disclosing between $500,000 and $1 million of his significantly more valuable stock.

Nowhere is Al Gore's environmental hypocrisy more glaring than when it comes to his relationship with Occidental. While on the one hand talking tough about his "big oil" opponents and waxing poetic about indigenous peoples in his 1992 book "Earth in the Balance," the Elk Hills sale and other deals show that money has always been more important to Al Gore than ideals.

I do not have time to find the source- But Al Gore's
Royalties for the Zinc mine are from Armand Hammer-
(read-Occidental petroleum )- I believe they have been Fined NUMEROUS times for polluting the Tennessee river. Get this, the "royalties are in a trust" - bet he doesn't pay ANY taxes either.

Al proves that the apple (try saying that last word with two fingers in your mouth and you'll be much closer to the word I wanted to use but can't say here) doesn't fall too far from the tree.

Americans have memories shorter than Bill Clinton's (fill in your favorite male body part here) so a little review of history is in order (not that anyone will remember any of this when Al launches his dark horse shot at the White House).

Al's old man was a bud to Armand Hammer who was the ONLY American (and I use that title very loosely here) allowed to fly his private jet into and out of the USSR under Stalin and his successors without either US or USSR diplomatic clearance. Hammer cranked up and ran many businesses for old Uncle Joe, starting with a pencil factory as they had to keep records of those 60 million kulaks Joe starved to death. So your application of the term "communist" is an apt one.

Old Armand gave Al, Sr. TONS of campaign dough and Al, Sr. carried Armand's water on Capitol Hill for years.

And here's a REAL piece of irony: Hammer owned Occidental Petroleum which was responsible for the LOVE CANAL toxic waste mess in New York. Gotta wonder how much of born-again envirowhacko Al, Jr's current assets flowed from the profits Hammer and Occidental generated from burying those thousands of barrels of sickening toxic sludge at Love Canal.

Gee, could that be why Al is on his current crusade? Guilt? A heartfeld desire to purge the sins of his old man??

NYAAHHHHHHHHHH...!!!!

According to the report, the state:

• Has not done a systematic statewide study of its aquifers.

• Requires that public water systems sample only the treated water they provide to customers, not raw ground water samples.

• Does not require routine sampling of private wells and springs.

Al Gore Jr.’s involvement in mining can be traced to Sept. 22, 1973.

Former U.S. Sen. Albert Gore Sr. bought about 88 acres along the Caney Fork River from Occidental Minerals, a subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum, for $160,000. Included in the deal was the subsurface area. The rights to the minerals below ground were then leased back to Occidental.

The mine is a complex of several interconnected sites known as the Gordonsville Mine and Mill, the Cumberland Mine and the Elmwood Mine, which is the closest to Gore’s property. In addition, previous mine owners operated a refining plant in Clarksville.

Through the years, mining operations expanded as the facilities went through several ownership and name changes. Horizontal shafts, called drifts, extend under the Gore property, Kreider said, although the Gores don’t know their number and location.

By 1983, the Elmwood-Gordonsville complex was the largest zinc-producing mine in the country and Tennessee the largest zinc-producing state.

Geo, you seem to think that the well-fed former vice president is being less than honest. Perhaps, but it's entirely okay.

You see, Al Gore has secured several TRUTH CREDITS. These truth credits are similar to the carbon credits he buys so he can use more energy than dozens of normal families, and still sanctimoniously lecture us how we need to cut back our carbon feet print or the oceans will rise 20 feet in this century.

For TRUTH CREDITS to work, all "Honest Al" Gore needs to do is to find some pathological liars (perhaps he knows some) and persuade them to tell some true statements, then Al is free to lie as many lies as would have been told by his mendacious buddies.

Now, I know this may sound illogical or foolish, but then again, if flying around the world in an executive jet (roasting enough jet fuel to fill his overly heated swimming pool several times over) is okay as long as you pay someone else to say they fly less and take their carbon credits, then TRUTH CREDITS make no less sense.

And, if one is really, really, really sleazy and slimy, he can buy carbon credits from himself. I know that would seem just plain crooked and dishonest, but it's not. (It's all covered under TRUTH CREDITS.)

.

This series of stories that the Tennessean has run is nothing more than some hit pieces orchestrated by the Clinton attack machine.

Whats strange is that the Tennessean's Editor, Frank Rich, is one of Gore's buddies.
