There have been a spate of claims over the past few months stating that actress Emma Watson may or may not return in her role as Hermione Granger in the last two Harry Potter films, and this reached a fevered pitch over the weekend with several tabloid reports stating that she was definitely quitting. Here is a bit of news that will perhaps ease the fears of the scores of you who emailed: CBBC Newsround is now reporting today quotage from official sources that are laying to rest all these rumors, as WB said "We're extremely confident that Emma will be back for films six and seven." The report continues with this : "Emma, who plays Hermione in the films, is set to sign her new contract soon."
Potter Ping!
Warning: the following comment is the height of offensive cynicism.
"So I guess she decided to go ahead with the abortion."
Yes and no ...
It would be strange to have a different Hermione, but she has such an annoying voice!
No disrespect intended TC, but that seems intentional. Hermione is supposed to irritate you (Emma has got that part down pat, IMHO).
For the life of me, I can't imagine where she would go. She's not exactly Jodi Foster. Rumor is that she aced the college tests which makes her officially "an insufferable know-it-all" who doesn't need an acting career.
It's the "upper class twit" Oxfordshire accent. The Phelps twins have a much more (to my ear) pleasing Birmingham accent.
I know you can be more offensive and cynical than that!
Not as annoying as that forehead.
No, she gave the baby up. If Ralph Fiennes knocked her up on the set of "Order of the Phoenix" she should have had it by now.
Rowlings alter ego in the book.
If she does not return, rowling could just play herself...
You may be right. I don't think I've ever heard her voice outside the part.
.... who else is not excited?
Fred and George Weasley, I assume. I agree, I like their voices much better.
Do you have a Potter ping list? Can you put me on it? ??
Does Ms. Rowling have an annoying voice?
Retrokitten keeps the list. Pinging her now to add you.
Me.
Need to get these films made before these actors and actresses are in their 30s
Every major character in the Potter series is glancing anxiously at Max Baer and Adam West.
I'm glad. I like her a lot. I REALLY liked Ron throughout all their movies, too.
I have. Her voice is quite as irritating in real life as the one she uses as Hermione. Cute she may be, but remaining more or less silent would do wonders for her sociability.
She has a fairly cute giggle, however.
Thanks!
I guess she was naturally qualified to be Hermione, then :-).
Assuming she did her own screaming in the first three movies, she is a champion screamer, too.
I didn't see the more recent movies -- I assume Cho Chang is hot and Harry is a moron (well, that's a given) for giving up on her?
It's a Hermionish giggle. I don't know how they do it. One mystery we guys don't have a clue understanding. I predict that Warner will invest heavily in keeping her.
That actually raises a question for me (which anyone else may find as irritating as her voice): have the kids changed towards the Potter characters and thus have been altered by art or did the casting directors do that good a job that the kids were not in fact having to change voice/stance/attitude to do the job?
I wonder who these kids would have turned out to be, had stardom not been thrust upon them?
And I hope the speculation in this thread is as false as it is scurrilous.
She's also very rich. She may not need any career.
Her giggle in the films is one thing and I agree with you.
I have watched the making-of stuff and her giggle in those efforts is what I was referring to. As I said to TC, not all that much difference between the two and there's likely a cautionary tale in there somewhere.
Damn ... WB was pretty stupid not to have arranged for these movies already. Even if they had made forfeiture clauses in case the movies weren't made .... would have been cheaper than what they are having to go through now.
I don't think Cho is nearly as pretty as she should be. Not at all like I'd pictured. I guess I was thinking "young Gong Li," and instead they've got "Chinese-American Valley Girl."
Her parents are both lawyers and divorced from each other. Who knows how that all settled out.
Their agents probably advised the actors not to sign for all of them at once. Look at Radcliffe. He's richer ($28 mil for the movies alone) than Prince William. His salary for the first was $250,000 and he got $14 mil for the fifth.

The new Hermione.
Could be an age thing. Not sure how contract law in England works, or America for that matter but I do know that things get complicated when minors are involved in contracts that span beyond them being a minor. There's a major change in one's legal status and who can and can't sign chunks of your life away, and I doubt a contract signed by your gaurdian/ parent is enforcable once they are no longer your gaurdian.
Oh My God, she's turned into a Red X.
Hmmmm.....try the link http://www.wizardnews.com/story.20040502.html
I agree; I was underwhelmed.
They ought to find one director who is interested in doing both remaining films, and have him shoot them both at the same time, the way Peter Jackson did the Lord of the Rings trilogy. That way, you don't have to worry about your actors aging too much between films, and there is less of a chance of one dying between films, as did Richard Harris, as Dumbledore. As of this July, there will be no more mystery about how it ends.
>> I know you can be more offensive and cynical than that! <<
Aw, gee; thanks!
One development that could enhance that approach is that all of the major actors are over age 16 so they can work 12-14 hours per day instead of 4. The last 2 "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies were shot as one, too. "At World's End" hits theaters in May.
I agree with TC, though looks are not everything. Problem for me is lack of character-development, which is always sexier in the long term. This is less a problem in the books because they have the leisure of chapters along the way to develop such things. Films rarely have that luxury, if we're discussing epics.
Rowling's voice is not irritating but so extremely 'british' that I cannot understand a word she says.
Any time, my FRiend, any time...
;^P
But JK has had 3 kids. Emma's only had one - Ralph Fiennes' love child.
Good casting makes it easier for the actors to perform as desired. This can be especially important with children.
Good point. If you look at the three LOTR films as a single movie, I think it's one of the best ever made. It beats out great shorter movies, because it is long enough to do justice to the material, and it beats other great movies series, because it has better continuity.
Our daughter and I were fortunate enough to catch the "Lord of the Rings Symphony" in Connecticut, when it was on tour. Howard Shore had put together music from the three movies, and while the music was being performed, the charcoal drawings that were shown during the credits of the three films were projected on large screens over the stage. It was like an opera, with the beginning, middle and end, and it was just marvelous!
