LAFAYETTE - Someone knocked down the sign amid the crosses in Lafayette sometime Monday night or early Tuesday.
The incident happened after anti-Iraq war protesters held a vigil at the hillside Monday night to remember the war dead. Supporters of the Iraq mission, who oppose the display of crosses, showed up in a counter protest that grew loud and heated at times. Police officers kept an eye on the crowd of roughly 350.
On Tuesday, cross organizers propped up the sign, which states the number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq, and will restore it this week, they said.
This is the third time in five months the sign has been vandalized. In November, a woman climbed the hill and kicked down the sign. Organizers restored the sign but in later December someone covered its message with a black substance police said was paint.
Police have not arrested the woman in the November incident because the landowners did not file a complaint with police, said police Chief Mike Fisher. No arrest was made in the December incident because the vandal's identity is unknown.

interesting choice of words here. are we supposed to think that the police are lying? is there a possibility that it WASN'T paint?
A disconnect in this article."
My thoughts exactly.
Are these the crosses with the Muslim emblem on them?
I agree. I don't care for the display - using soldier deaths, many of whom support the mission, as a means to promote their agenda. I find their disregard for the families' feelings and the dead themselves shameful. However, defacing their display is just plain stupid.
