Pelosi Statement on Gore Testimony on Global Warming
Speaker. House.Gov ^

Posted on 03/21/2007 2:16:05 PM PDT by Sub-Driver

Press Releases Contact: Brendan Daly 202-226-7616 For Immediate Release 03/21/2007 Pelosi Statement on Gore Testimony on Global Warming

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on former Vice President Al Gore’s testimony on global warming at a Energy and Commerce Committee hearing today:

“As a global leader on combating climate change, Al Gore has been both an educator and an agitator – spurring so many to take real action. Today, he presented Congress with challenging and creative ideas, and made a compelling case for the urgency to act.

“In the House, we have begun the hard work of addressing the challenge of global warming. The newly created Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming will raise the visibility of these urgent issues and gather critical information to protect America’s security. Other committees of jurisdiction are working to report legislation by June.

“The time to take that action is now. We hold our children’s future in our hands – not our grandchildren, or great-grandchildren, but our own children. As the most adaptable creatures on the planet, it is time for us to adapt.”

Katie Couric did an opinion piece after Gore won his oscar, lamenting that she was afraid that global warming would come to be perceived as a "liberal" cause. She was afraid that it wouldn't get more support if the liberals and entertainment elites support it.

Are any prominent Republicans or conservatives on board as supporting Al Gore, agreeing that this issue transcend politics or national borders or any other issue? Or is it just Dems. / liberals / elitists?

I believe Ahhnold is on board with the global warming garbage. However, he's not a real Republican or conservative, rather just the closest thing we could get in CA (and infinitely better than a true libdem such as Davis was)...

They get "Gored"..

Some people worry about nukes in Los Angeles Harbor, about hunting down Bin Ladin, overthrowing hostile dictators such as Saddam and Ahmadinejad, trying to rebuild failed states like Somalia, stuff like that.

Other people want to protect America from the weather.

Thats what we face as the 08 elections approach. We have to choose between someone who will wage war on people who want to kill us, versus someone who is worried that the temperature might go up 1.5 degrees F over the next two generations.

Its a 50-50 electorate, and the profoundly unserious are gaining ground.

Obviously people who worry about the atmospheric envelope around the Earth warming up have too much time on their hands.

But I think they should be enccouraged. It keeps them off the streets and out of trouble.

Add rino's to the list. Here are some of Albores's people's comments...

What we’ve got to do in energy conservation is try to ride the global warming issue. Even if the theory of global warming is wrong, to have approached global warming as if it is real means energy conservation, so we will be doing the right thing anyway in terms of economic policy and environmental policy.

—Timothy Wirth, former U.S. Senator (D-Colorado)

The extinction of the human species may not only be inevitable but a good thing....This is not to say that the rise of human civilization is insignificant, but there is no way of showing that it will be much help to the world in the long run.

—Economist editorial

We advocate biodiversity for biodiversity’s sake. It may take our extinction to set things straight.

—David Foreman, Earth First!

The only hope for the world is to make sure there is not another United States: We can’t let other countries have the same number of cars, the amount of industrialization, we have in the U.S. We have to stop these Third World countries right where they are. And it is important to the rest of the world to make sure that they don’t suffer economically by virtue of our stopping them.

This [cooling] trend will reduce agricultural productivity for the rest of the century.

—Peter Gwynne, Newsweek 1976

There are ominous signs that the earth’s weather patterns have begun to change dramatically and that these changes may portend a drastic decline in food production—with serious political implications for just about every nation on earth. The drop in food production could begin quite soon… The evidence in support of these predictions has now begun to accumulate so massively that meteorologist are hard-pressed to keep up with it.

—Newsweek, April 28, (1975)

This cooling has already killed hundreds of thousands of people. If it continues and no strong action is taken, it will cause world famine, world chaos and world war, and this could all come about before the year 2000.

—Lowell Ponte in “The Cooling”, 1976

If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but eleven degrees colder by the year 2000. … This is about twice what it would take to put us in an ice age.

—Kenneth E.F. Watt on air pollution and global cooling, Earth Day (1970)

The above quotes were found at Dr. Bill Wattenburg's page

Consider the Dossier of an idiot...

Dossier

A publication providing succinct biographical sketches of environmental scientists, economists, "experts," and activists released by The National Center for Public Policy Research.

Environmental Scientist: David Foreman

David Foreman, a former Washington lobbyist for the Wilderness Society, is co-founder and board member of The Cenozoic Society and the founder of Earth First! He is author of A Field Guide to Monkey Wrenching and Ecodefense, books that provide detailed instruction on how to sabotage equipment, industrial projects, roads and vehicles in the name of environmental protection.

Among the sabotage techniques outlined in Ecodefense is "tree spiking" -- the act of inserting long nails into trees to deter loggers from cutting them down. This sabotage technique can prove lethal to timber industry workers who encounter it: In 1984, for example, logger George Alexander was almost killed when his chainsaw hit a spike and a fragment from his saw blade severed one of his carotid arteries. These arteries supply blood for both external and internal parts of the head, including the brain.

According to Ron Arnold and Alan Gottlieb, authors of Trashing the Economy, defectors from the environmental movement allege that Foreman founded Earth First! in 1980 at the urging and with the financial backing of the Sierra Club and the Wilderness Society. According to these sources, Earth First's purpose was to offer a new, more extreme environmental agenda, thereby making "mainstream" environmental groups such as the Wilderness Society and the Sierra Club appear more reasonable by contrast.

Earth First! certainly does make other groups appear moderate: In the name of environmental protection, Earth First! members have spiked trees (a policy Earth First! renounced several years ago), filled bulldozer gas tanks with sand, chained themselves to heavy industrial equipment to prevent its use and, according to some corporate executives, threatened to kill executives' children and spouses. In 1989, David Foreman and three other members of Earth First! were arrested by the FBI on charges of conspiracy to sabotage nuclear facilities. He left Earth First! in 1990 and the group has floundered ever since.

Selected Foreman Quotes

"It's time for a warrior society to rise up out of the earth and throw itself in front of the juggernaut of destruction, to be antibodies against the human pox that's ravaging this precious, beautiful planet." - Quoted by Albert Gore in his book Earth in the Balance (1992)

"We must... reclaim the roads and the plowed land, halt dam construction, tear down existing dams, free shackled rivers, and return to wilderness millions and tens of millions of [acres of] presently settled land." - Quoted by Dixy Lee Ray in her book Trashing the Planet (1990)

"I'm not advocating illegal activity unless you're accompanied by your parents, or at night." - Quoted by Ron Arnold and Alan Gottlieb in their book Trashing the Economy (1993)

"We advocate bio-diversity for bio-diversity's sake. That says man is no more important than any other species... It may well take our extinction to set things straight." - Quoted Ron Arnold and Alan Gottlieb in their book Trashing the Economy (1993)

"An Ice Age is coming and I welcome it as much-needed changing. I see no solution to our ruination of earth except for a drastic reduction of the human population." - Quoted in From the Trenches, a publication of Putting People First, March 1, 1993

Dossier Credibility Ranking

On a scale ranging from 0 to 10 measuring political science versus real science, David Foreman scores a 10.0 for political science.
