A top leader in the Southern Baptist Convention predicted that former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani would not succeed in winning the votes of Southern Baptists if he were to become the Republican nominee for president in 2008.
In brief comments after a chapel service at the North Carolina legislature on Wednesday, Richard Land, the president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, said former U.S. House speaker Newt Gingrich would likely fail for the same reason.
"Three is one marriage too many for them," said Land, referring to the 16.4 million members of the Southern Baptist Convention, the nation's largest Protestant group. Both Giuliani and Gingrich have been married three times.
A friend and adviser to President Bush, Land keeps close watch on politics as head of the commission, which studies moral, social, and religious liberty issues for the convention.
Though Southern Baptists are independent and do not necessarily follow his counsel, Land said three others who have already entered the presidential fray were more likely to win support among Southern Baptists. Those three are Sam Brownback, a Republican Senator from Kansas, Michael Huckabee, the former Republican governor of Arkansas, and Duncan Hunter, Republican Congressman from California.
As for Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, who is a Mormon, Land didn't rule him out. But, he said, the Republican hopeful has to convince the American people that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints won't dictate his policy. Land said he met with Romney recently and told him: "That's not a hill that can't be climbed. But you're going to have to climb it."
Finally, Land said he sensed that U.S. Senator John McCain was perceived as a wild card.
"People are uncomfortable with his predictability," said Land. "They tell me, 'We don't know how he's going to come down on the issues.'"
Fred Thompson would be the only conservative in the race if he joins it......
Duncan Hunter not only announced, he makes Thompson seem like a schoolgirl.
I guess two is ok, then. Somebody stop this guy when he starts making sense. :-)
Heck, why stop there. Larry King for POTUS!
Why would they support a nonChristian who doesn't even pretend to share their values. I could see them supporting an Orthodox Jew, but NOT a lapsed Catholic.
I suppose the Southern Baptists will happily vote for once-married Hillary Rodham Clinton in the upcoming election.
Somebody appoint this guy Pope?
This isn't a problem, as he'll be getting all of the Democrat votes. Aren't you paying attention here on FR?
Rudy is more than just a lapsed Catholic. He might as well be an atheist(as if I had any room to criticize, but the point still stands)
BTW: Giuliani is as Catholic as Kerry and Mussolini. He's the poster boy for situational ethics.
Yep, as an agnostic, I have no use for those who claim to be (fill in the blank) but live their lifestyle contrary to the teachings of that creed.
Rudy has his work cut out for him.
Hillary is not in the GOP primary last I checked.
I don't think so, but you can back the non-recognized (no name recognition) candidate like most others who are misled.....Duncan Hunter will assure a Republican loss, if he even can win the nomination to begin with...
Since 1994 Hunter has received $40,700 from Wilkes and his companies. In 1997 Hunter and Cunningham worked to extend a multi-million dollar earmark for Wilkes ADCS to perform document conversion tasks for the Pentagon despite protests from the Defense Department, which claimed that ADCS services were not needed and a waste of resources. Senator John McCain denounced the House Armed Services Committee for wasting resources in the Defense appropriations bill. One of the earmarks, worth $9.7 million, was for ADCS to convert maps of Panama into electronic documents. Hunter and Cunningham both warned, at the time, that China was planning on invading Panama and that America should have electronic documentation of the buildings in the country. They used this premise to justify their inclusion of the $9/7 million earmark that the Pentagon did not want in the appropriations bill.
No doubt they have an agenda but the list is extensive. Obviously you know of it and must believe it is manageable
No. Fortunately, there is only one of those.
Exactly. My own Catholicism lapsed long ago, but I don't go around still claiming to be one either.
BTW: Do you resemble Jessica "Dark Angel" Alba?
Hunter is as clean as a whistle, but the alleged wrongdoings will be sure to emerge, as will the fact that he has not been charged with squat over any of that. And I'll put up Hunters credibility any day of the week over what is or is not needed by the armed forces.
Does this sound like they are talking about the primaries?
Its along time till we all decide....but this is no surprise.
I think I'd have to change sexes to do that. So no. :)
They'd rather have Hillary Clinton?
Southern Baptists who won't vote for an Italian Catholic....I'll alert the media.
Anyone can make a mistake. I think what he is saying that twice is allowing for one mistake. Three times begins to look like a habit.
..mark this Southern Baptist down as a NO...
I am a raise Southern Baptist, been visiting Methodist Church, (because I am sick of SBC telling me what to think and who to vote for) but I for one just very well MIGHT VOTE FOR RUDY
Of all people, Southern Baptists, or any Christians for that matter, should believe in repentance and redemption.
Redeemed! How I love to proclaim it.
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb.
Redeemed by His infinite mercy.
His child and forever I am!
Yes, but look at that pristine only married once record! And let's not forget that Ronald Reagan had a broken marriange and was rather estranged from his son -- he turned out to be an OK president, didn't he?
Southern Baptist have a way with JUDGING Others!
I do not like that about them..............
I have no problem with being leery of a divorced guy (I don't agree with it as a general principle, but I can understand it), but the idea that two marriages is ok, but three is one too much, strikes me as strange, silly, and unintentionally comical.
They just won't vote , it's plain and simple. I suspect many gun owners will sit it out as well.
That I might be redeemed.
That I might be redeemed.
The Father sent His only Son
That I might be redeemed.
I never heard of the guy. His level of significance reminds me of the fall of that Haggard fellow, the guy who the MSM insisted was so famous despite the fact that nobody seemed to know much about him. :-)
Sometimes the reason for the divorce has to do with the other person in the relationship. I know this nuance escapes a lot of folks, but it's true.
Is that necessary? I was planning to vote Hunter in the primaries if Fred Thompson doesn't declare, but some of you DH supporters are just plain vicious. It isn't attractive.
And NOBODY can make Fred look seem like a schoolgirl.
If you were half as much anti-Hillary as your are anti-Rudy, you'd have some credibility.
I see no signs of repentance.
But don't besmirch all Southern Baptists--all 16 Million of them.
If you have a problem with using the Bible as the standard--then that is another, deeper spiritual issue...
I love it when people defend by saying "he has not been charged with any crime" or "there is no evidence of that"...
Reminds me of the ol' Klintoon years, where evidence suddenly disappeared, and political chits could be called in anytime to prevent prosecution 'cause someone else had something to hide, and didn't dare pursue prosecution.
I stand by my assertion: Hunter is un-electable, and would assure a Hildabeast White House in 2008.
I must be slow....I'm missing the point in your post, I guess.
..that is simply an unfair statement which implies ethnic and religious bigotry.
You are free to say and believe anything you want--but you are wrong on this one...
