A top leader in the Southern Baptist Convention predicted that former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani would not succeed in winning the votes of Southern Baptists if he were to become the Republican nominee for president in 2008.
In brief comments after a chapel service at the North Carolina legislature on Wednesday, Richard Land, the president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, said former U.S. House speaker Newt Gingrich would likely fail for the same reason.
"Three is one marriage too many for them," said Land, referring to the 16.4 million members of the Southern Baptist Convention, the nation's largest Protestant group. Both Giuliani and Gingrich have been married three times.
A friend and adviser to President Bush, Land keeps close watch on politics as head of the commission, which studies moral, social, and religious liberty issues for the convention.
Though Southern Baptists are independent and do not necessarily follow his counsel, Land said three others who have already entered the presidential fray were more likely to win support among Southern Baptists. Those three are Sam Brownback, a Republican Senator from Kansas, Michael Huckabee, the former Republican governor of Arkansas, and Duncan Hunter, Republican Congressman from California.
As for Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, who is a Mormon, Land didn't rule him out. But, he said, the Republican hopeful has to convince the American people that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints won't dictate his policy. Land said he met with Romney recently and told him: "That's not a hill that can't be climbed. But you're going to have to climb it."
Finally, Land said he sensed that U.S. Senator John McCain was perceived as a wild card.
"People are uncomfortable with his predictability," said Land. "They tell me, 'We don't know how he's going to come down on the issues.'"
Fred Thompson would be the only conservative in the race if he joins it......
Duncan Hunter not only announced, he makes Thompson seem like a schoolgirl.

Why would they support a nonChristian who doesn't even pretend to share their values. I could see them supporting an Orthodox Jew, but NOT a lapsed Catholic.

Rudy is more than just a lapsed Catholic. He might as well be an atheist(as if I had any room to criticize, but the point still stands)
BTW: Giuliani is as Catholic as Kerry and Mussolini. He's the poster boy for situational ethics.
Yep, as an agnostic, I have no use for those who claim to be (fill in the blank) but live their lifestyle contrary to the teachings of that creed.

I don't think so, but you can back the non-recognized (no name recognition) candidate like most others who are misled.....Duncan Hunter will assure a Republican loss, if he even can win the nomination to begin with...

No doubt they have an agenda but the list is extensive. Obviously you know of it and must believe it is manageable

Hunter is as clean as a whistle, but the alleged wrongdoings will be sure to emerge, as will the fact that he has not been charged with squat over any of that. And I'll put up Hunters credibility any day of the week over what is or is not needed by the armed forces.

I am a raise Southern Baptist, been visiting Methodist Church, (because I am sick of SBC telling me what to think and who to vote for) but I for one just very well MIGHT VOTE FOR RUDY

I have no problem with being leery of a divorced guy (I don't agree with it as a general principle, but I can understand it), but the idea that two marriages is ok, but three is one too much, strikes me as strange, silly, and unintentionally comical.
They just won't vote , it's plain and simple. I suspect many gun owners will sit it out as well.

Sometimes the reason for the divorce has to do with the other person in the relationship. I know this nuance escapes a lot of folks, but it's true.
Is that necessary? I was planning to vote Hunter in the primaries if Fred Thompson doesn't declare, but some of you DH supporters are just plain vicious. It isn't attractive.

If you were half as much anti-Hillary as your are anti-Rudy, you'd have some credibility.

Reminds me of the ol' Klintoon years, where evidence suddenly disappeared, and political chits could be called in anytime to prevent prosecution 'cause someone else had something to hide, and didn't dare pursue prosecution.
I stand by my assertion: Hunter is un-electable, and would assure a Hildabeast White House in 2008.
