They made my son's 5th grade science class watch "An Inconvenient Truth Today"

Posted on 03/22/2007 9:48:42 PM PDT by CaptainMorgantown

I've been a member for awhile but this is the first time I've ever started a thread. This is a vanity, so one of the mods can move it if I've put it in the wrong classification.

My son is a student a Cheat Lake Middle School in Morgantown, West Virginia. For the last several weeks, he has come home saying that his teacher frequently takes time out of class to discuss his personal views on global warming. Today, he said they took two hours out of class to watch Al Gore's pseudoscience documentary "An Inconvenient Truth". I was absolutely stunned.

I have heard of several controversies where they've shown in in public high schools, but I cannot believe that they would show this to 5th graders. There wasn't even a word of advance notice to parents.

I've tried to contact the school's Principal and the the local newspaper. I'm at a loss as to how proceed from here to draw some attention and outrage, and would welcome advice from fellow freepers.

You can download it from Google Video as a Meg4 file if you click on the Ipod/Sony link. From that I was able to burn it on a CD. I hope that helps. Incidentally, if you don't have high speed Internet it will take you days to download it (235 MGS). I don't have high speed but somebody I knew did, so it worked out.

I saw it on a 12 hour flight to Germany, what can I say, I was bored.

Twelve hours long Al Bore video?  I'd be bored too.  ;-)

You might suggest to your son's teacher, in the spirit of full education and learning about ALL sides of an issue, that he have the students ALSO watch "The Great Global Warming Swindle" which aired on Channel 4 in England a couple of weeks ago. It was also up on YouTube in four parts, I think.

If the teacher is TRULY concerned with education, NOT indoctrination, he should allow this. If he doesn't, then go to the Principal with your 'concern' that the teacher is not allowing the kids to see all sides of the issue. Throw some 'educationese' around, like saying that the teachers is not giving them the information that would allow them to learn to think critically about the subject.

This movie is being shown all over the country in schools, churches, and now on cable T.V. as well. All parents who are forced to watch this movie with their children or else their children will get lower grades should sue big time!

What you posted is good, sensible advice.
I suggested what I did because he wanted to know how to "draw some attention and outrage", not how to refute the video.

I have seen the film. It is really a poor made film and it shouldn't have won an Oscar.

I think there are a lot of people who get too worked up about this movie. Knowledge is power, and knowing what the movie is talking about gives us as parents insight that we can offer our children.

I believe their is a warming of our planet, but I believe it is from the sun. I also believe that this warming is natural and we can't do anything about it except to adapt.

As for pollution, regardless of whether it causes global warming, we should make efforts to reduce air pollution anyways. I live in the Inland Empire in southern Cal. and I see the crappy air all the time.

This is just like the 1960`s-`70`s (late `60`s early `70`s) when I was in elementary school, my hippie liberal teachers back then kept pushing "pollution" down our throats...To this day I remember it clear as day, making us draw posters for everything that was being polluted, "air, water, earth pollution".."In 20 years the air will be so polluted we won`t be able to breathe!" Well gee whiz, 40 years later and I`m still waiting to see someone suffocate.

Now they drop pollution for "global warming"... I guess everyone suffocation from pollution didn`t exactly work out, so now let`s try for everyone burning up from global warming. Maybe 40 years from now they`ll try "global icing" or "oxegen poisoning"..

What I want to know is when are we going to have "liberal depletion"?

Air Pollution Facts

During the past 29 years, air pollution in the United States has dramatically decreased as a result of the combined efforts of government, industry and individuals. Yet, research indicates that the public is largely unaware of this progress and believes that air pollution continues to increase and the air quality is deteriorating. The Foundation aims to educate the public about the great strides that have been made as well as the steps individuals and organizations can take to contribute to continued progress.

My sincere thanks for the info Jones! But get this - one of our fellow FReepers just sent me a FReep mail saying he'd send me a copy. That is good news as I really don't have a clue about burning discs from my PC. Sad, but true.

I remember when I told my Dad that my lazy civics teacher showed us "world at war", he muttered: "don't believe that commie tripe", this coming from a man that tried on at least 3 occasions to join up during WW2 while he was way too young (joined the Army in 47 at 17).

Talk to your child. Ask questions, find out what he's being taught and educate yourself or find experts in areas that you're not familiar with to counter any indoctrination. 'The Global Warming Swindle' is an excellent film. Look at this as an opportunity to teach your child how to think for himself.

I've tried to contact the school's Principal

And the principal has not called you back ASAP? I would be calling the school board superintendent. If the principal doesn't return my call with an hour I call back and say if I don't get a call back I will be calling the superintendent about the problem I have. I guess I am at the top of the nutty parent list because I have gotten through even when she is in a meeting. I refuse to give permission for my child to see any movie that I have not signed a permission slip for. It is working so far for me.....

Send your information to the various Conservative talkshow hosts. Public exposure of propagandizing teachers is probably the most effective way to dissuade them (as a group) from improperly forcing their political agenda on their students.

I can imagine the national outrage if a teacher dared show "Nativity Story" or any movie that was positive toward Christianity.

I think it would be interesting if some parents hijacked a classroom and had them watch "The Jesus Film". I'd imagine that a lot of people here would be poo-pooing such an act.

Liberals will win because they play with a different rulebook.

Make the needed calls, school board, etc., but keep trying to get some type of discussion going using the opinion section of your local newspapaer.

The movie "Happy Feet" is also animated environmental porn. It is put together in a slick way so that kids will enjoy it, but it slams industry.

I'm sure more will start popping up.
