Excited by Edwards (Andrew Sullivan turns on a dime)
Opinion Journal ^ | March 22, 2007 | Andrew Sullivan via JAMES TARANTO

Posted on 03/23/2007 12:10:20 AM PDT by tlb

"Edwards Suspends Campaign" was the title of an Andrew Sullivan post at 12:17 p.m. EDT today:

He does it because his wife has a recurrence of cancer in some degree to be further explored. It is of a piece with his character to do this; and a simple testament that he has the right priorities and values to be a president of the United States. Sorry, Ms Coulter. But this man will be remembered for a character you do not even want to possess.

But it turns out Edwards didn't suspend his campaign, even though his wife's cancer has recurred. Does this call Edwards's character into question? Not on your life! Here's Sullivan at 12:39 p.m.:

So, despite earlier reports, Edwards will not suspend his campaign. Good for him. . . . What I saw in this press conference was the reality of family values--not the rhetoric, not the divisiveness, not the politics, just the reality of an actual family dealing with real issues. . . .

The campaign should go on, as life goes on. The cancer should neither help nor hurt it. But I will say this: Elizabeth Edwards is a truly remarkable human being. And her marriage is an inspiration.

"He's pretty, he has flowing locks, he's young-looking," Sullivan wrote of Mr. Edwards back on March 6.

and all in twenty two minutes. The question now arises, does Andy now think Ms Coulter's character is upgraded too?

What, he wants it both ways?

There in a nutshell is Andrew Sullivan's character...

If I were running for the Presidency and my wife came down with cancer that was a serious threat to her live I'd drop out. If I were President and we were not at war I would also step down.

The ambitious deceive themselves when they propose an end to their ambition; for that end, when attained, becomes a means.

We frequently pass from love to ambition, but one seldom returns from ambition to love.

Unruly ambition is deaf, not only to the advice of friends, but to the counsels and monitions of reason itself.

Ambition's cradle oftenest is its grave.

Andrew lost the respect of many conservatives when he decided to become a one-issue man back in 2004.

Andrew is no conservative. I heard him on Hugh Hewitt.

He's a nutcase.

Family values? who the hell knew that using your terminally ill wife as a campaign prop was family values?

I think she is "incurable", but not anymore "terminal" than we all are eventually "terminal".

I'm of two minds on a situation like this. One part says:"Screw the Presidential ambitions, I have all the money I need, lets enjoy life together" and the other part says:"Well, lets not mope around about this, lets get out there and have fun running for office"

Pollwise, all he's going to get out of all this is a lot of travel and stinky hands.

I'm not really sure how Sullivan became the conservative of choice in the media, but he's trotted out there to represent "my" side of the argument far more than I'd ever wish him to be.

Andrew Sullivan is a typical gay urban liberal who decided to claim the monniker of "conservative", that's all.

He's narcissistic, like most homosexuals, whose entire identity is wrapped around the manner in which they have sex. Which fuels his sense of entitlement and victimhood, BTW.

Not hard to understand at all, IMHO.

That's right, because she's not what she was supposed to call him.

Bingo. Plus, he has failed a critical thinking test.

Not his character, his sexual preferences.

So, apparently the fact that his wife has inoperable cancer is what gives him character, no matter HOW he responds to it.

OK, that's not fair -- if he divorced her over it, that probably wouldn't be seen as good character.
