School bans shirt: 'Be happy, not gay' (student response to GLBT 'Day of Silence')

An Illinois high school student is in federal court seeking the right to wear T-shirts that declare sentiments such as "Be happy, not gay."

Heidi Zamecnik, of the Chicago suburb Naperville, wants to wear the shirt at school the day after the "Day of Silence," a nationwide observance April 19 to protest harassment of homosexuals in schools, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Zamecnik is asking the court to order her school, Neuqua Valley High, and Indian Prairie District 204 to allow her to express her family's "conviction that true happiness cannot be found through homosexual behavior."

The "Day of Silence," according to its website, calls for teachers and students to observe the day quietly "to echo'' the silence homosexual students face all the time. Students commonly wear "pro-gay" shirts that day.

According to the lawsuit filed on behalf of Zamecnik and a freshman student, the "Day of Silence" "encourages students to show visible support for homosexual lifestyle by refusing to speak during the school day, while conveying written messages in the form of T-shirts, buttons, and stickers, all of which promote homosexual behavior."

The Sun-Times reported Zamecnik did not outwardly object to the event during her first two years of high school, but in her junior year she wore a shirt after the "Day of Silence" that read, in part, "Be happy, not gay."

The suit claims Dean of Students Bryan Wells told Zamecnik the shirt offended others and she had to remove it or go home. Her mother, Linda Zamecnik, was called when she refused.

Wells and Linda Zamecnik agreed the shirt's message could be altered to read "Be Happy. Be Straight."

The lawsuit, however, contends the agreement was breached when a school counselor crossed out "not gay" in black marker, but did not replace it with the agreed phrase.

The principal and superintendent, the suit states, told Linda Zamecnik their staff did nothing wrong.

The mother tried to meet with Principal Michael Popp but was put off several times before finally he told her school rules bar students from wearing messages that "upset" other students, the suit claims, according to the local Daily Herald of Arlington, Ill.

The family contends that because of their daughter's viewpoint, she suffered unlawful discrimination, humiliation and punishment.

They cite the First Amendment right to free speech and the Fourteenth Amendment clause of equal protection, which prohibits one group from expressing its religious and philosophical viewpoints while stifling another.

As WND reported last year, a dozen high school students were suspended for wearing T-shirts to join in a nationwide counterprotest to the "Day of Silence," called the "Day of Truth."

The students came to school with shirts emblazoned with the message: "Homosexuality is sin. Jesus can set you free." School officials gave them an ultimatum: Remove the shirts or face disciplinary action. Thirteen students decided to keep their shirts on and were suspended for two days. The prinicpal insisted the school's actions were justified as many students "were upset" because the shirts "were rude."

If you have children enrolled in public school, keep an eye out for this annual 'rite of spring'. This is one of the most insidious methods used by GLSEN to spread their 'gospel' to impressionable youth. I fought back at my daughter's school.

That is either a special kind of bravery or that is a special kind of stupidity.

I tend to lean to the former.

Either way, I feel sorry for any kid willing to lean into the gay agenda buzz saw. I hope she is ready for what she is about to catch in the face.

The Declaration of Independence clearly states - We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. Let's see the courts strike her t-shirt down. Although she might have screwed herself by going off on the homosexual route with the word "gay" instead of claiming the original definition of the word.

How did the anniversary of the battle of Lexington & Concord get hijacked as another day to push the homosexual agenda on captive audiences?

How about a T-shirt that read: "Don't deck the halls with gay apparel"? Would that be allowed if the wearer claimed it was just an anti-Christmas statement?

Might have been true in the 50's, but the "love that won't shut up" is the ONLY one celebrated in the average high school.

Unless I'm missing something, I've never heard of a "hetro" day, a "celibate" day, or an "I like being on top" day."

Anyone?

It is very telling about the sodomite agenda. It would be disturbing that a school system would be actively participate in promoting sexual relations between it's students at all, much less homosexuality.
I am SO thankful that God has allowed me to be able to send mine to a private school!

I hear you, but I'm thankful that God placed my conservative, gorgeous and talented Christian daughter right in the middle of the heathen in her public school. She's straight-talking, unafraid and on "a mission a yard from the gates of hell". I've posted before that a very left-leading classmate told her this year that he really wants to hate her, but he just can't. Makes me all teary-eyed just thinkin' about it!

LOL! That's exactly the point I was trying to make to a friend of mine recently. She works at a high school and they have a gay and lesbian club. Why not a foot fetish club? An "I like to sleep with cheerleaders with big boobs" club? The Missionary Position club? Why should there be ANY club at a school based upon people's behaviors or preferences in the bedroom?

No need to fight back. Just be incorrigible. When they say watch this film about anal sex, tell your kids to point and laugh. When the Principal sentences some sort of suspension, pay your kid money to go shopping or go to the paint ball range or some such reward. Public School has over the years gotten into the mode of trying to push strange, wierd, and downright ridiculous agenda's. The only reasonable way to fight back is to teach your kids what is right and wrong, and to be incorrigible to this type of indoctrination. Whats the school going to do, ruin their lives? This isn't the high school or public schools we attended anymore, the Queer agenda has a solid footing and will continue its march forward. The more you aggressively resist the more their agenda will strive to survive. When it is ignored and laughed at for what it is - A crazy life threatening agenda, then it will shrink away. I laugh at queers who try to push their agenda on me where ever I go, and the response is pure anger on their part - they do not know how to react to a person who couldn't care less about them or their nonsense. They know perfectly how to act to angry parents - they've done it for years successfully which is partly why their agenda is moving towards the top in society's worries and woes.

Point and Laugh is the proper way to deal with queers. They'll go back into the closet.

Wait a minute! If enough kids do this, it's a good way to protest the day of silence, strength in numbers and all that. I think that "Be Happy, Not Gay" is a brilliant line. Some people are put off by Christian slogans, but "Be Happy, Not Gay" is a slogan a lot of people could support regardless of religion. I think that this slogan needs to spread as widely as possible! The gay rights movement so far has usurped most of the tag lines, i.e., "homophobic", "gay", etc., etc. This is a way of taking back the word "gay" and using gay rights tactics at the same time.

Where in the hell in any document does it say that any person has the right to not be offended?

When I hear someone say something like "I'm offended"...my first response is, "Cri-min-neee! Just ignore it and get on with your life will ya?"

Yes, The truth is a RUDE... this nonsense is just one of the many many reasons my children will never set foot in a public school as a student.

Kids wear a uniform, don't have to worry about t-shirts with slogans one way or the other on issues... White Shirt, blue pants, belt and shoes. Girls, white blouse, blue plaid skirt to the knees... No muss no fuss. Oh yea, and they don't have things like "Gay Days" either. Or Islam is Peace nonsense.... or whatever the PC lie of the month is.

Anybody have any ideas on how to make the slogan "Be Happy, Not Gay" a nationally-known slogan? I'm serious. It says so much and does it in four words. I can see it as a bumper sticker (vandalized car, anyone?). But if it becomes widespread enough...strength in numbers. Signs on telephone poles.. Surely somebody out there knows something about marketing and public relations. It's a way of taking back the conversation. Let's stop complaining and think productively. Brainstorm with me!

While I agree, if this were my child, I would simply send the school a message and try to get other parents to do the same, by keeping kids home on "Gay days"

If I understand you correctly, I agree. This is a fight the parents should be fighting and not the kids.

In my case I would be holding her out that day as well and we would be off to the museum for some actual free thought, and my school board would be hearing from me on regular occasion regarding the subject.

If I was confident she would be treated well and fairly by her brainwashed peers I would be a lot more comfortable with it, but I wouldn't be confident after seeing how these moonbats spew hate.
