The most ominous detail about Iran's seizure of 15 British Royal Marines in the Shatt-al-Arab waterway on Friday morning is that the servicemen were reportedly taken into custody by the navy of the Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
The IRGC is a powerful, separate branch of the Iranian armed forces. Soaked with nationalist ideology, it has grown into a state within a state in Iran, with its own naval, air and ground forces, parallel to official government institutions. The IRGC is directly controlled by Supreme Leader Ayatullah Ali Khamenei, the ultimate font of religious and political power in Iran.
The IRGC also has its own intelligence arm and commands irregular forces such as the basij a voluntary paramilitary group affiliated with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the Quds force, which has been accused by the U.S. of supplying material to Iraqi insurgents bent on killing American soldiers.
The IRGC is also known for its clandestine activities including logistical support for militant organizations like Lebanon's Hizballah, which it helped to set up in the 1980s, and several Shi'a militia groups in Iraq. The IRGC's activities are often a thorn in the side of Iran's Foreign Ministry, which is forced to repair the ruptures in Tehran's diplomatic relations with countries the Guard has inflamed with its self-directed adventures. Nevertheless, it has been one of Iran's main instrument in projecting power and influence over the last few decades.
Because the IRGC's actions are always interwoven with the religious-nationalist ideology of Iran's hardliners, extricating the British may be complicated.

"Why Iran Seized the British Marines"
They did it because they could..no two ways about it. Our job is and always was to make it so they CAN"T!!!!!
ACT
OF
WAR
I just hope that Tony Blair has the stones to invoke Article 5 of the NATO charter, so that we can find out if WE have the stones to move forward with the next logical step.
I swear this must be an old Persian saying that goes something like this "what's an act of war or two between friends?"
Agreed. It's Blair's call. Hopefully we will use this to delcare war on Iran unless they surrender to our demands.
Because they lack respect (fear) of the British.
I suspect there will be a very firm and brief window in which Iran can save face and let them go. If it appears no harm will come to them (including extended captivity), the West will let them wriggle out of this dust-up. As the article states, however, there could be a parallel foreign policy being run by the mullahs, which isn't very interested in diplomatic niceties. We'll find out by Monday, I'm sure.
Ahmadnutjob: "We didn't do it...we were nowhere in the area...they just looked like us".
RN: Yeah, right. Bombing begins in 5 minutes.
Why is it that you can never fine a Thatcher when you need one?
But with a DEM Congress in charge of such declarations, I'm hoping that the NATO obligation will provide GWB with a loophole so that we don't have to go hat-in-hand to Nancy Pelosi before doing the job that needs doing.
This is the UK's version of the P3 incident. Will they, like we did then, kowtow and show the world we're wimps, or will they properly kick butt?
I guess that's how they felt about us when they seized American hostages. Of course Carter being president probably had something to do with lack of respect, etc.
'Because they lack respect (fear) of the British.'
They appear to lack respect (fear) of the Americans as well:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Four U.S. soldiers and five civilians on boats in the Shatt al-Arab waterway were detained, blindfolded and interrogated by Iranians for several hours on Sunday, the U.S. Central Command said on Monday.
The soldiers and three of the civilians, including a U.S. contractor, were escorted back to their boats and released on Monday but two civilian boat drivers remained in detention, a spokesman for Central Command said.
The group was "taken by force by Iranians. They were blindfolded, taken up river for about 20 minutes to a building where they were interrogated," Cmdr. Dan Gage said by telephone from Central Command headquarters in Tampa, Florida.
I've never seen a country that was positively BEGGING to have its ass kicked.
But, I predict the British will play softball and let the Iranians get away with yet ANOTHER act of war.
Will the British people ever tire of being urinated on by islamic thugs?
The earlier incident and this recent incident may be Iran feeling that a pre-eminant attack is near and hostages are a way to prevent such a thing (at least in their minds). The sub near the Saudi port is disturbing. An attack on Iran may certainly disrupt oil supply for a short time. The recent run-up in oil prices and the USA doubling it's petroleaum reserve seem to be indicators we are going in and soon.
Good point.
Republican Guard significance ping...
Yes we do, but they know we won't.....
Discussing this all right now on FOX- oil prices..pre-emption etc..
"Discussing this all right now on FOX- oil prices..pre-emption etc.."
Very inetersting, guess I am not the only person to connect the dots.
Thanks...I got home just as Fox was finishing an interview with Richard Miniter and Mansour Ijaz....
Ijaz said that there must have been some cargo on that ship that the Brits were after..
I think they took the Brits because they want to use them to get back the Iranians we snatched awhile back. If they took our GIs' they wouldn't be able to hold off an attack on them. By taking the Brits, they can use the Brits to put pressure on our gov't to give back theirs. JMT
That's precisely what I believe as well.
The west will do nothing other than squeal about this. Iran knows it, and is the other reason they didn't hesitate.
Another issue is exactly what was on the ship that was being searched.
And now MadMood says he won't come to address the UN...becuase we didn't get the visas ready in time?! Pppffttt...
Tom Clancy has nothing on this..
Any act that even appears to be aggressive will trigger the murder of those innocent men.
Iran dares us to throw the first punch, which we won't, and monkey boy goes home to brag what pussies we are.
The socialists bray loudly about what a coward President Bush is and what a further embarrassment he is to us and the world and the pressure to get Rove and Cheney is increased.
I can only hope that the first round against the house (public announcement that President Bush will not cave to the bill passed today) is the beginning of telling the internal assassins they will not take Rome down and that we will defy the 'if you don't know history you will repeat it' mantra.
God bless America and God help President Bush and our administration.
Oh, he is really scaring me!!
I am glad he is not coming...I was hoping the US would deny him a VISA because of this incident with the Brits.
If I was Tony Blair right now, I'd let Iran know that they now have 24 hours to return their soldiers unharmed, or we will commence bombing of all suspected Iranian nuclear facilities.
Hey, wait, guys. The Marines were on a U.N. approved mission. We can count on the U.N. to come down hard on Iran! [ducks flying pig]
'Will the British people ever tire of being urinated on by islamic thugs?'
I didn't see America rushing to do anything when they had their soldiers detained by the Iranians. Don't you tire of it as well?
"If I was Tony Blair right now, I'd let Iran know that they now have 24 hours to return their soldiers unharmed, or we will commence bombing of all suspected Iranian nuclear facilities."
Absolutely.
I would give them 24 hours to release the Brits. If they don't then NATO should wipe out the entire Iranian "navy." That should take about an hour or so.

Tony Blair needs to go on the telly and inform the Iranians that the U.K. will sink one Iranian vessel every hour on the hour until their sailors are released safe and sound.
Then start carrying it out.
Let Ahmadijackinoff scream bloody murder.
Eff 'em all.
I bet that will start the war. Then the U.S will hop in.
Gesundheit
The equivalent of Germany's SS, in fact.
Owing to the summary rejection by the German Iranian Government of the request made by Her His Majesty's Government for assurances that the sovereignty neutrality of Iraq Belgium would be respected all interference with British military personnel operating in Iraq would cease immediately, and all British military personnel detained by the Iranians would be returned unharmed immediately, Her His Majesty's Ambassador in BerlinTehran has received his passport, and His Her Majesty's Government has declared to the German Iranian Government that a state of war exists between Great Britain and Germany Iran as from 11pm on August 4 March 23, 2007.
IOW...plausible deniability.
"And now MadMood says he won't come to address the UN...becuase we didn't get the visas ready in time?! Pppffttt...

Personally, I don't want that peice of *hit in our country ever again. That he can make statements denying the holocaust and threateting the USA & Israel with total destruction and come into our country to give his viewpoints to the world is absurd. Oh yeah throw in he is partially or fully responsible for the Embassy hostage crisis, murder of US diplomats, servicemen and civilians and I am truly baffled he is still alive.
This excerpt did not tell me why Iran seized the British Marines.
Just a thought: if the reports of internal problems in Iran are correct I wonder if the religious leaders want to provoke a military incident in order to get the population in line. If the general population believes they are under threat from the US and/or the UK they could use it as a means stopping internal strife.
I appreciate the update report, although I don't find Mansour Ijaz to be particularly credible.
*shrugs*
