Muslim moderates threatened in phone call
CTV Toronto ^ | Mar. 22 2007

Posted on 03/24/2007 9:49:06 AM PDT by Dan Evans

Police have launched a hate-crime investigation after a phone call was received by the Muslim Canadian Congress from a man who vowed to "slaughter" members of the group unless they stop speaking publicly about Islam.

The message warned organization members that they must "cease from your campaign of smearing Islam" or "I will slaughter you." It was left on the voice mail of the secretary-general for the Congress on Monday.

The caller mentioned Congress founder Tarek Fatah and current president Farzana Hassan-Shahid by name.

Both have openly criticized the politicization of Islam and alleged influence of Iran and Saudi Arabia in Canadian mosques. They have also been threatened in the past.

After publishing her book "Islam, Women and the Challenges of Today," Hassan-Shahid faced hecklers and had her home vandalized.

"But swearing by God that `I will do this and slaughter all of you,' that's pretty chilling," she told the Toronto Star.

"He said that we are a Munafiq organization. Munafiq really means a 'hypocrite' and to call someone like me a hypocrite I think is totally erroneous and fallacious," Hassan-Shahid told CTV Newsnet.

"I have a different understanding of my faith and it's not hypocritical. I've been articulating it in a very honest manner so I think that that in itself is a fallacy and he needs to overcome it," Hassan-Shahid said, when asked what she would tell the caller if given a chance.

Known for his opposition to Sharia law, Fatah campaigned against a 2005 effort to introduce the religious arbitration courts into Ontario law.

A threat last August convinced him to resign as communications director for the Congress.

Jason Kenney, Canada's secretary of state for multiculturalism, said he was deeply disturbed by Monday's threat and notified Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day of the incident.

"Threats of violence against individuals for their political or religious views have no place in this country," Kenney told the Star.

"It's totally unacceptable and I would hope the whole community - both the Muslim communities and the broader community -- would stand in solidarity with those who are being threatened."

Reports say both Fatah and Hassan-Shahid won't stop speaking out but they are frustrated with the lack of public debate and the inability to air their views without the threat of violence.

"Just in case anyone out there wonders why there aren't more moderate Muslims."

"yeah right, this is why there aren't more moderate muslims."

It is one reason.

And people such as you are another.

Have you read the Koran? (An actual question, and not trying to pick a fight--and, no, personally have not read the Koran; simply suspect some people of acting as though they are experts on Islam when all or almost all of their sources are hearsay).

From the BBC article on the topic, the questionnaire didn't ask whether the viewer recognized the stuff was legal, but whether they were offended by it.

The film was supposed to include nudity and drug use and a homosexual kiss.

Obviously, Christians should also be opposed to this, even if it is recognized that it is legal in the Netherlands.

"And people such as you are another."

And your mamma dresses you funny.

Where have the 'moderate' muslims been for the last 6 years? They've been silent which has made many people believe there is no such thing as a moderate. Now they come out and face anger and thats justification for them to keep silent? Hog wash, if they were truly peaceful they would be shouting loud and clear at the radicals. Instead they are keeping silent, not for fear from Americans but for fear from the radicals.

From a former muslim:

"There are moderate muslims, but there is no moderate islam."

Words to remember, for they are true.

""There are moderate muslims, but there is no moderate islam.""

I would agree with that statement. There are people that are good and happen to be muslim.

But sitting back and keeping silent while others from your faith do despicable evil is not the mark of a courageous or peaceful person.

The radical muslims have been compared to nazi's. Not all germans were nazi's but many germans looked the other way while the nazi's came to power and worked their evil.

no, personally have not read the Koran;

Then I'll say this as politely as I possibly can.

You don't know what you're talking about.

I've read it. I'll boil the essential differences between Christianity and islam down for you in very simple terms.

Ready?

Here they are:

Jesus loves you.

mohamet wants you dead.

Now go find a copy of the hate filled diatribe they call a holy book and read it for yourself.

"You don't know what you're talking about."

How can you type (say) this? (P.S. You're wrong). Your comment is in response to a question. Thus your above quote doesn't make sense.

Looked at the links. Agreed--it seems that the film isn't mandatory, though would be helpful.

Moderate muslims are under constant death threats everywhere on earth. Saudi oil money finances a lot of the terrorist IslamoNazi cells, the rest funded by the mad mullahs of Iran.

It is easy to mischaracterize non-muslims in discussions like these. Granted, the behavior of muslims themselves makes a negative attitude almost inevitable.

There is a tendency here in FR to "project". The most passionate anti-muslim posters have read the quran. Many times.
I recall my first impression of it as a young man: a comic book for the primitive and ignorant. It literally took months to get through it. The few subsequent readings went somewhat easier, realizing the central role that it plays in the most primitive and inflexible culture in the world, for almost 1500 years, now.

Actually, the original quran is too simple-minded to be taken seriously by anyone with an IQ over 50.
That's why the tens of thousands of commentaries and the hadith. It would take too long to comment on those, but the information is there for anyone who wishes to learn.
It is obvious that most of the hadith is fiction.

Parts of Islam have more to do with organized crime than with religion.

Paranoid? I'm not paranoid but I am thinking clearly. Maybe that's my problem. So many today aren't.

Is it paranoid when you look behind yourself when walking down a dark alley? Being smart is one thing, playing ignorance is another.

I am not a religious person. I wondered where these Muslims got these ideas. I read the Koran through, understanding that Muslims believe it is the word of God given to Muhammad via the angels.

Then I read Bukaris Hadiths, the life and times of Muhammed and the example he set and how he answered the questions about behavior etc.

When I finished I was convinced If you believe there is only one God and Muhammed is his prophet, that Zarqawi, bin Laden, and the Wahabis, and the terrorists have the correct interpretation of the religion.

I got so involved in reading about Islam, I felt obligated to read about Christianity and Judaism and subjected my non- religious self to extensive taped college courses on the 3 religions. Taught by the best college professors on religion in this country and Egypt.

Islam is deadly to non believers. And it is a full time all the time religion. You subjugate convert or kill Infidels. You never make friends with Infidels.

Christianity and Judaism have become part time religions, and today do not pose a threat to non-believers.

There is nothing in the New Testament that encouraged or condoned things like the Inquisition. But there is plenty in the Koran and Hadiths that condone killing infidels. - tom
