Think Tsunami.

Spreading across the South China Sea.

Those standing waves in water can spread pretty fast. The water moves very little, but the waves are traveling at almost sonic speed.

The deep-water conditions for a massive undersea landslide appear to be almost ripe for a repeat of the Indonesian tsunami of December 2004.

.5 meters is the height off-shore. When it comes in, it could be massively larger.

Initial reports of the impact.

Such as:

Trains/aircraft prevented from leaving.

Landslides/prefectural roads closed.

Some people stuck in elevators in a hotel.

Damage at temples/shrines.

Nuclear power plants checking in.

Some injuries now being reported.

Earthquake happened at 9:42 a.m. local time. By 9:43, only within one minute, Prime Minister Abe was alerted at his home by phone, and emergency measures kicked in. That is it at this time. Nonstop reporting on Japanese TV channels.

No, when tsunami warnings are issued, the predicted height is the height at impact at shore - not at sea - that would be pointless.

Could you possibly be any more selfish? There are probably people injured and dying and those who have lost their homes, and all you can think about is whether or not your skiing trip will be ruined.

Here's some iformation about the mechanics of tsunamis:

"...Tsunamis in deep water can have a wavelength greater than 300 miles (500 kilometers) and a period of about an hour.

This is very different from the normal California tube, which generally has a wavelength of about 300 feet (100 meters) and a period of about ten seconds. (The period of a wave is the time between two successive waves.)

Tsunamis are shallow-water waves, which means that the ratio between water depth and wavelength is very small. These shallow-water waves move at a speed equal to the square root of the product of the acceleration of gravity (9.8m/s/s) and the water depth.

The deeper the water, the faster and shorter the wave is. For example, when the ocean is 20,000 feet deep, a tsunami travels at 550 miles per hour..."

More tsunami info here.

Algore must be tickled green after hearing about the earthquake. Things really seem to be coming together for him.

Last week he stated "the Earth is breaking up". Then a fellow congressweasel called him a "prophet" (although "profit" seems more apropos).

I'll bet he sleeps all warm and fuzzy tonight while visions of an enormous earthquake on Krakatoa dance through his head.

That was meant to be sarcastic... sorry I ruffled your feathers... Earthquakes here are almost daily. I used to be terrified of them.. but now they rarely wake me.
I don't know the full potential of this particular one since I never watch Japanese TV.

Thankfully, the tsunami that arrived wasn't 0.5 meters.

It was six inches, or about as devastating as the wave you can cause with a nice cannonball dive in your backyard pool.
