Occured about 10 minutes ago, at 8:42 pm Eastern Time 5:42 pm Pacific Time US on Saturday night. People are being warned to get away from the western coastland areas in Western Japan--facing the Sea of Japan, specifically in and near Ishikawa Prefecture. 7.1 magnitude earthquake, about 6 on the Japanese scale. Felt in Nagano Prefecture as well. These areas are all considerably away from Tokyo and earthquake itself not felt in Tokyo. Tsunami warnings are being broadcast on most Japanese TV stations right now. The estimated times of the "wave" hitting the coast are being broadcast.
On FOX news now.

WTF is Karl doing? It was supposed to hit in China.
Think Tsunami.
Spreading across the South China Sea.
Those standing waves in water can spread pretty fast. The water moves very little, but the waves are traveling at almost sonic speed.
The deep-water conditions for a massive undersea landslide appear to be almost ripe for a repeat of the Indonesian tsunami of December 2004.

There's another thread about a 7.1 in Vanuatu going on here.
Sheesh, that's less than you'd choose if you were a novice surfboarder.
Two large earthquakes within an hour of each other. Wow.
.5 meters is the height off-shore. When it comes in, it could be massively larger.
Am I missing something here or has the title of this thread changed 3 times?
Such as:
Trains/aircraft prevented from leaving.
Landslides/prefectural roads closed.
Some people stuck in elevators in a hotel.
Damage at temples/shrines.
Nuclear power plants checking in.
Some injuries now being reported.
Earthquake happened at 9:42 a.m. local time. By 9:43, only within one minute, Prime Minister Abe was alerted at his home by phone, and emergency measures kicked in. That is it at this time. Nonstop reporting on Japanese TV channels.
Does this really help?
More reports of damage and injury to residents coming in.
No, when tsunami warnings are issued, the predicted height is the height at impact at shore - not at sea - that would be pointless.
my bad.
Could you possibly be any more selfish? There are probably people injured and dying and those who have lost their homes, and all you can think about is whether or not your skiing trip will be ruined.
OK, thanks, just checked it and you are correct.

Info from Michelle Malkin's site. Moves the story ahead a little bit.
Hello to all the long war folks.
Here's some iformation about the mechanics of tsunamis:
"...Tsunamis in deep water can have a wavelength greater than 300 miles (500 kilometers) and a period of about an hour.More tsunami info here.
This is very different from the normal California tube, which generally has a wavelength of about 300 feet (100 meters) and a period of about ten seconds. (The period of a wave is the time between two successive waves.)
Tsunamis are shallow-water waves, which means that the ratio between water depth and wavelength is very small. These shallow-water waves move at a speed equal to the square root of the product of the acceleration of gravity (9.8m/s/s) and the water depth.
The deeper the water, the faster and shorter the wave is. For example, when the ocean is 20,000 feet deep, a tsunami travels at 550 miles per hour..."
OOPS, wrong thread.
Last week he stated "the Earth is breaking up". Then a fellow congressweasel called him a "prophet" (although "profit" seems more apropos).
I'll bet he sleeps all warm and fuzzy tonight while visions of an enormous earthquake on Krakatoa dance through his head.

That was meant to be sarcastic... sorry I ruffled your feathers... Earthquakes here are almost daily. I used to be terrified of them.. but now they rarely wake me.
I don't know the full potential of this particular one since I never watch Japanese TV.
Apology accepted, and hoping you will accept mine. I was worried about the people over there and flew off the handle at the first person who crossed my path. Be well.
Thankfully, the tsunami that arrived wasn't 0.5 meters.
It was six inches, or about as devastating as the wave you can cause with a nice cannonball dive in your backyard pool.
Hope all is well with you. (You are still over there, no?)
Apology accepted, and hoping you will accept mine. I was worried about the people over there and flew off the handle at the first person who crossed my path. Be well.Accepted :) and thank you. I know the feeling, I've done that a few times myself and ended up sticking my foot in my mouth >.
When will we be told the truth about this, i.e., how much environmental damage, including when the radioactivity will be carried through the atmosphere to the United States and what precautions to take?
Holy Hannah! You better come home right now!
Japan is about to sink into the sea.
Three of these in less than a week???
Damn! Fooled again. I just now noticed the date of this thread.
Need more coffee...need...more...coffee...
