BAGHDAD [MENL] -- Al Qaida has begun to flee the Iraqi capital.
Officials said Al Qaida operatives have sought to escape joint Iraqi-U.S. combat units during their security mission in Baghdad. They said the combat units have begun to dismantle Al Qaida cells in the city, now divided into 10 zones.
"I can say that all the zones have been secured by Iraqi and American forces that are seeking to eliminate Al Qaida elements and death squads," Capt. Eric Clark, a U.S. military spokesman, said.
Clark said the flight of Al Qaida cells from Baghdad has led to a decrease in attacks on Shi'ites in the capital. He did not provide details.

Welcome to Roach motel Baghdad, Al Qaida. There is no such "check out" from this motel. You terrorists are surrounded by checkpoints and barriers. In other words, you terrorists are trapped.

Welcome to Roach motel Baghdad, Al Qaida. GREAT metaphor.
I'm not doubting this article, but I AM curious as to when the MSM will start reporting this. I mean the friendly MSM--Wall Street Journal, FOX, O'Reilly--and how the liberal MSM will spin it.

Almost forty years after Vietnam and four years into the war, the military finally learns how to fight an effective counter-insurgency campaign.
The military brass learned something new and it only took them forty years... You know, I'm an Atheist, but this might not be a bad time to head to the nearest church. Hell might very well have frozen over.

I heard of no car bomb or other suicide attacks from Iraq yesterday. It seems like the days when there are no major attacks the MSM is very silent about what's happening, but let an attack occur it treated like an everyday occurrence.
The administration must make it a point to talk EVERY DAY about what's happened in the previous 24 hours, the number of attacks, ied's, bodies found, etc. Attendance at the briefing should be mandatory so that the various news agencies who fail to report the increasingly calm days throughout Iraq have no way to avoid admitting that they knew, and failed to talk about, the increasing number of relatively calm days.
I swear it's like no one on our side ever gives any thought to how the war is being reported, and therefore perceived. Like so much of the Dubya administration the war effort is allowed to be attacked and lied about and spun by every Tom, Dick and Harry with absolutely no response from anyone of authority.
My guess is they expect success and figure when it happens it will speak for itself. That is just not the case. They need to be talking about that success all the time, telling us what it will look like, diminishing violence from the insurgents and increasingly fewer sightings of evidence of it.

This cannot be true - I have not read in the NYT nor have I heard on the major news stations.

Tony Snow could start each media briefing with the previous day report of action or success.

Hear that, Pelosi? - with your ears. Now try your brain. C'mon! You can do it! We're winning. Can you handle that?
About as well as Algor can handle regular, natural climate cycles.

Move along... Nothing to see here... Unless you hear it on the drive-by media, you should ignore all signs of progress in Iraq... Nothing to see...

Indeed he could, great idea.
Speaking of Tony, prayers for him today as he undergoes surgery to deal with a newly found mass in his lower abdomen. He will be out for several weeks and he'll be missed.
I pray the mass will be innocuous and that he'll have a speedy recovery. He's a great guy.

we knew how to fight an effective counter insurgency campaign 40-30-10 years ago, but weren't and still are not allowed to fully do it.
notice all the communist in south and central america, indonesia and the phillipines in the 80's..... didn't think so....you're welcome.
fighting the war sometimes is the easy part, being allowed to fight it is the tough part.
Bush is fighting the terrorists, congress, the press, CIA, lots of wannabe future congressmen and senators in the JAG corp and the p#ssies at home that don't know that war is violent and senseless.... and necessary sometimes.

i liked On Guerrilla Warfare by Mao Tse-tung... a Marine translated and republished it. all others take from this and I feel is the root of most ops in the guerilla warfare world.
it's all intel, intel, intel.... and killing the cockroaches... and then demoralizing the others....takes about 10-20 years..... but if you ask the generals like pelosi and murtha... should be done by 2008. I'm waiting for their book to come out and decide..../sarc
