Zimbabwe turmoil threatens cricket tour as Mugabe becomes international pariah

THE Federal Government will meet cricket authorities to try to prevent the national team from touring Zimbabwe.

The Foreign Affairs Minister, Alexander Downer, will discuss the issue with Cricket Australia after the team returns from the World Cup in the West Indies.

There are growing calls for Australia to boycott the tour in September as the Zimbabwean President, Robert Mugabe, becomes an international pariah. Mr Mugabe has been condemned for presiding over increasing political and economic turmoil, including state-sanctioned violence against opposition leaders.

Australia are scheduled to play three one-day internationals in the country.

Mr Downer warned that a tour of Zimbabwe could be seen as a "blessing" of the regime. "When our team comes back from the West Indies after the World Cup … we'll sit down with them and talk about this," he said. "I don't want them to tour Zimbabwe."

The only way Cricket Australia can avoid being fined by the International Cricket Council if it does not tour Zimbabwe is if it has a legitimate security concern, or if it is prevented from touring by the Australian Government.

Cricket Australia was not immediately available for comment.

Every country needs to pile it on to tip the balance of power out of this tyrant's hands.

This headline can't be right. Everybody knows America is the international pariah.

If you don't believe me, just ask John Effin' Kerry.

Not much that can be done... There was an election in Rhodesia at the end of the civil war that included blacks. A black won. However, the government did not allow the marxist rebels to vote, so Thatcher, in one of her few mistakes, said she wouldn't recognize the election results. So another election was held, and the marxists won. Anybody with half a brain knew that this would be the result.

The problem is that nobody will really do anything because nobody wants to admit that Ian Smith was right, and the world was wrong.

"nobody wants to admit that Ian Smith was right, and the world was wrong."
Truth there Mr. King. I fear the next ruler of Zimbabwe will be the same thing, from a different tribe is all.

That's right. It was Thatcher - one of her few mistakes - and Carter - on his usual form - who oversaw Mugabe's election.

I fear that your optimism is misplaced.Mugabe will die peacefully...in his bed....just like Stalin and Mao did.

***....Senior Foreign Office officials have said they believe Zimbabwe is near a "tipping point" and internal unrest in Mugabe's ZANU-PF party may soon produce a challenger.

A senior British official said last week Britain would put a small package of principles for re-engagement to any emerging successor to Mugabe and "would look closely at what that faction stood for".

"Mugabe's men might break the bones of the democracy campaigners but they cannot break the quiet dignity of these extraordinary human beings. One day Zimbabwe will return to democracy," McCartney said on Monday.

"Mugabe knows this. He knows he has got it wrong and that the crisis has resulted in an increase in internal pressure. He feels more vulnerable," McCartney said....***

Being an international pariah is in fashion. It pays.

Zimbabwe turmoil threatens cricket tour as Mugabe becomes international pariah

As he becomes an international pariah? Becomes? Uh, it may be 'news' to the AP and the lefties, but Mugabe has been an international pariah for quite some time. At least they are starting to come around to the idea. Probably too late for most Zimbabweans, though...

It is an old gripe of mine that the International Cricket Council will not sanction Zimbabwe and will fine any national cricket organization that purports to boycott Zimbabwe.

And at the pusillanimity of the England and Wales Cricket Board in failing to defy the ICC.

Cricket is not just a game. It has political overtones.

I am convinced that if the Oz and the UK were to refuse to play against Zimbabwe the ICC would cave.

Hold a bake sale and send the ICC a check.

Then tell 'em to sod off.
