Ridgeway Clock Helps Martinsville Speedway Celebrate 60th Birthday

The long tradition will continue late on the afternoon of April 1 when Martinsville Speedway president Clay Campbell awards the winner of the Goody’s Cool Orange 500 the latest in a long line of grandfather clocks produced by Ridgeway Clocks.

And the newest trophy clock, the Independence Grandfather Clock, is by far the biggest, most striking of all. The Independence Grandfather Clock is the only clock in the world that plays the American chimes of “God Bless America” and “America the Beautiful,” along with the traditional Westminster chime. The retail value of this numbered and limited edition is over $11,000.

Of all drivers who have competed at Martinsville Speedway, seven-time NASCAR NEXTEL Cup champion Richard Petty has the most clocks with 12, winning his first in 1967. Jeff Gordon leads all current drivers with seven Ridgeway Clock grandfather clocks.

excerpt

Martinsville is a driver's track where exchanging paint is commonplace and no car completes 500 laps without body damage. But, with its long straight-aways and short, tight turns, such is expected.

The winners at Martinsville compose a "Who's Who"" among drivers. The King, retired driver Richard Petty, still leads all modern era Winston Cup winners with 15 victories although his last victory came in the spring of 1979. But he still is the only driver to win here in four different makes of cars--Plymouth, Dodge, Ford and Chevrolet.

Darrell Waltrip is gaining on Petty with 11 wins, while the victory list includes Wallace, Cale Yarborough, Dale Earnhardt, Fred Lorenzen, Geoff Bodine, Harry Gant, Mark Martin, Ricky Rudd, Ernie Irvan, Bobby Isaac, Buck Baker, Junior Johnson, Morgan Shepherd, Buddy Baker, Dave Marcis, David Pearson, Earl Ross, Bob Welborn, Lee Petty, Jim Paschal, Jim Massey, Bill Amick, Fireball Roberts, Rex White, Tom Pistone, Joe Weatherly and Nelson Stacy.

Hey, it's still racin'!

True, true, true. It is just my high expectation of my fav track and it seemed to be lacking somehow. You can bet I'll be in watchin' the night race later in the season and looking for sparks...

I hate short tracks, it was a pain to watch Bristol...
...how the hell are you going to fit 43 cars in a 1/2 mile paper clip and get some racing excitement out of it, is beyond me.

Give me Daytona, Talladega, Texas...200MPH straight a way, 3,4 wide, paint exchange and all that, that's what I call nail biting excitement!

I sent ESPN a scathing email about our displeasure with the Busch Nascar coverage.

Good for you! Share the response if you get one.

Martinsville tends to be a boring race from my perspective. One line, follow the leader is not my idea of a good race. Might be a lot better in person (as any race is). But tv just don't do Marinsville any justice.

If you'd like ON or Off the Nascar at FR racing threads&stuff Ping List, Sound Off. Thanks!

This is not a High Volume Ping List and is intended primarily to alert folks of the posting of the weekly Nascar qualifying and race threads.

Occasional sports or military or prayers Pings using the list may also be sent as situation or subject dictates.

Profanities, flame wars, taunting other folks teams and drivers and belligerence in general in observing common sense rules and family decency standards on the thread may result in serious sanctions and potential removal from FR so be nice. :-)

The race ended with a green-white checker and was won by a guy who beat cars with fresher tires that had pitted behind him. Just my opinion, but I didn't think it was boring.

A cold front blew in here on the west coast today so fresh snow is headed toward the Rockies.

Boy howdy, the wind is howling through the guy wires, and the wind chimes are hanging sideways. We have a winter storm warning, and I think they're gonna be right this time. We're about to get clobbered with some cement to bust the trees down. I missed my last chance to take photos of the crocus and daffys yesterday. They're gonna be mulch today.

Martinsville is an awesome track to watch 30 or so modifieds, but not 43 winston cup cars.

It sure beats the cookie cutter tracks where the winner is determined on fuel strategy and someone chucking a glove out the window to cause a 'debris' caution.

That's a beautiful thread lead-in NY......great job.

Here's a little news on the new safer COT.

Brian Vickers Medical Update:
Representatives of BVLLC reported Monday afternoon that Brian Vickers is doing well and recovering from the 1st and 2nd-degree burns suffered to his bottom/feet and exhaust inhalation Vickers experienced during Sunday’s Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. Vickers requested medical attention following the 500 lap race, including oxygen, and is resting at home in Charlotte. He plans to address TRB business obligations Tuesday, test at Greenville-Pickens Speedway on Wednesday and is expected to be ready for this weekend’s race at Martinsville.
