Aides to Bush told not to destroy e-mails

The Republican National Committee and chairman of George W. Bush’s 2004 campaign have been ordered to preserve all e-mails related to White House business because they might be relevant to multiple congressional investigations.

Henry Waxman, Democratic chairman of the House oversight committee, said in letters to the RNC and the former head of the 2004 Bush/Cheney campaign that congressional investigations revealed that White House officials had used non-governmental e-mail accounts controlled by the RNC and the 2004 campaign for business.

In some cases uncovered in the probe involving Jack Abramoff, the Republican lobbyist jailed for corruption, White House officials used the accounts to avoid creating a record of communication.

In one instance, Mr Abramoff, who is serving a 70-month sentence on corruption charges, sent an e-mail to Susan Ralston, executive assistant to Karl Rove, the president’s chief political strategist, on her RNC account about a gaming-related decision by the department of the interior.

When the e-mail was forwarded to another official in the White House e-mail system, Mr Abramoff was warned by an associate who said the official “said it is better not to put this stuff in writing in their e-mail system because it might actually limit what they can do to help us”.

Mr Abramoff responded: “Dammit. It was sent to Susan on her RNC pager and was not supposed to go into the WH system.”

”We are reviewing it and taking appropriate action,” the RNC said yesterday.

In another instance, the congressional investigation into the firing of eight US attorneys has also revealed an e-mail exchange in which J. Scott Jennings, the special assistant to the president and deputy director of public affairs, used an RNC e-mail account to communicate with Kyle Sampson, the former chief of staff to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales who is due to testify about the firing on Thursday.

Bruce Fein, a legal scholar, said Mr Waxman was putting the RNC on notice and that any future destruction of e-mails could bring an obstruction charge.

The RNC said: “We are reviewing it and taking appropriate action.”

Separately, an aide to Mr Gonzales on Monday invoked her constitutional right against self-incrimination and refused to testify before a Senate panel investigating the firing of eight prosecutors.

Monica Goodling, who was involved in the firings, said: ”I have decided to follow my lawyer’s advice and respectfully invoke my constitutional right because the ...circumstances present a perilous environment in which to testify.”

Anyone that has anything to do with the Bush Administration that DIDN'T destroy any and all e-mails and other communications, after the election...when Waxman announced his intentions to get enough dirt to impeach Bush..

IS CRAZY!

Of course the Clinton White House purged such records.

And collusion between the DNC and the Media is never brought to light. Neither is collusion between Congressmen (D) and non-profit organizations.

They are looking for process crimes. Which reminds me, Tom DeLay still has not had his timely trial.

I hate these damn show trials. Partisan witchhunts at their worst.

This is called a "Fishing Expedition". The Commies can't even specify what the emails are relevant to because they do not know, nor do they know if there are any violations of law. Political BS.

Good for Monica. Waxman needs to get back to the business of chasing parked cars.

Waxfong, you rat-faced POS, why don't you focus upon cleaning up the cesspool that is the Democratic Party? Your party has the near-monopoly on corrupt scumbags fleecing the public...... start with Byrd-brain and go from there.

And whatever wasn't purged was stolen by Sandy Burglar. I'd love to see someone in the MSM point out all the Dems that were beholden to Abramoff. Sadly that will never happen in this MSM 'Republican culture of corruption' festival. Democrat corruption is never important. Exhibit A-Hillary completely discounting Bill's firing of the 93 attorneys and the MSM trumpeting the corruption behind GWB's firing of his 8 attorneys.

Let's see if the RNC and Bush 2004 Campaign have even the smallest amount of testosterone left to tell Waxman, "Kiss it!" Then they should subpeona all of Nostril Ned's emails and find out which anti-American government Nostril Ned is working for.

We outta get on to Sandy Berger and those documents, but I know an ethical-standards-kinda-guy like Waxman will surely get to that sooner or later. This latest Rove-hunt takes priority right now.

This clearly insane Dem party is absolutely obsessed with Karl Rove and they won't rest, EVER, until he's been solved.

Have we had enough?

Darn, the President just should have had illicit sex in the oval office with an intern and the democrats would have loved him to the point of even having an cheerful break open the champagne impeachment rally in full support.

Of course, President Bush is a very serious moral man, working overtime to keep Americans safe from the terrorist scum and the democrats are driven by nothing other than rabid senseless hate mongering and Bush bashing.

Too bad the democrats do not have one ounce of hate toward America's enemy and less hate directed toward our President.

The democrat leadership are time wasting fiddle faddlers and vilely useless money spending occupants of meaningless Congressional investigations and chairmanships.

Of course the Clinton White House purged such records.

As I recall, the Clinton White House said that they could not reproduce subpoenaed email correspondence because of computer problems. I don't think Clinton ever turned over their emails for scrutiny.
