Hollywood history repeats itself (Skeleton in Sean Penn's closet)
World Net Daily ^ | 03-26-07 | Joseph Farah

Would it surprise you to learn that one of those prominent Hollywood communist Jews who sided with Germany until the breaking of that Hitler-Stalin Pact was none other than Leo Penn, the late father of Sean Penn.

Amazing? Yes, but true.

You don't believe history repeats itself?

Now it's Sean Penn's turn to relive and recommit the sins of his father, who never repented of his Communist Party activities – activities that included support for and appeasement of Hitler's Germany at the very time the concentration camps were incinerating his Jewish brothers and sisters in Europe.

Penn spoke at a town hall meeting in Oakland last

Sean Penn is Jewish? Please tell me his mother isn't. If his mother isn't Jewish, he's not Jewish. Don't we have ENOUGH problems?

Farah's comments about Hollywood supporting Hitler until the 1941 Nazi invasion of the USSR is demonstrably false. Has he ever seen 'The Mortal Storm'? 'The Great Dictator', various Warner Brothers animated shorts, Three Stooges shorts...all made before the invasion.

So Charlie Chaplin and The Three Stooges were giving money to Hitler? There was a strong antiwar 'America First' contingent in the US before Pearl Harbor. I don't know how profitable anti-Hitler attitudes would have been at the time.

Farah is just talking about American Communists, who generally were against any support for the allies against Hitler, so long as the pact was in place, which did include a few hard-left Jews. After Hitler double-crossed Stalin and invaded the USSR, they flipped and enthusiastically supported Roosevelt's policies. Apparently, Penn's father was one of them, which I didn't know.

Most in Hollywood were like Reagan, strong New Dealers, liberal Democrats, but there was a communist element infiltrating the industry and working to take over the trade unions, which Reagan and others became alert to after the war and fought.

uuuum....Disney was a guy who has been accused of harboring pro-Nazi sentiments. When Hitler's film propangadist Leni Refenstahl visited the U.S. in the mid 1930s, Disney was the only studio head who would see her. You can see her influence on films like Bambi.

The Three Stooges made a couple movies knocking Hitler. All the Commies wanted us out of the war in Europe until Hitler invaded the USSR and broke their Pact. Then they wanted us in to help Stalin. All during the war, there was never mention of helping Communism survive. It was always "Mother Russia".

In America the Nazi movement was so large that they held rallies at Madision Square Garden and people would wear full Nazi uniforms and it would be a sellout crowd.

And the Nazi's were Socialists, just as the left here in America is today.

I don't know all the specifics, and I'm sure a lot more actors back then were pro-American. But from what I know now, Hollywood always had more Socialists/Communists than the general population.

The examples Borges gives were not made to satisfy the public mood. It is true that the Left in the USA supported (or, more specifically, excused) Hitler until the invasion. Hollywood, although riddled with CPUSA members, was not institutionally extreme liberal the way it is today.

The American left, aka communists, were against America supporting Britain until Hitler invaded the USSR. After that America, in their view wouldn't do enough to help fight "the fascist menace".

The CPUSA got their marching orders from Moscow. When Stalin signed the Non-Agression Pact with Hitler, by default, the CPUSA supported it as well.

The Great Dictator was begun long before the pact between Germany and the Soviet Union:

The Great Dictator - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Dictator

"Chaplin prepared the story throughout 1938 and 1939, and began filming in September 1939, one week after the beginning of World War II."

Similarly the Mortal Storm was based on a novel that was written before the pact.

Also, interestingly, the movie never mentions Germany, let along Hitler. (Though Hitler was incensed enough to ban all MGM movies in Germany after he saw it.)

Indeed. Many people forget that the Communist witchhunts were not about uncovering young, idealistic fools, but about finding Soviet agents.

And we've discovered later that there were many more Soviet agents in the US Communist movement than anyone thought.
