Hill's Prescription Diet™ m/d™ Feline Dry Food,
Hills Pet Nutrition, Inc. ^ | March 30, 2007) | Hills Pet Nutrition, Inc.

Posted on 03/30/2007 5:08:49 PM PDT by Fawn

Topeka, KS (March 30, 2007) - In accordance with its over-riding commitment to pet health and well-being, Hill's Pet Nutrition, Inc. is voluntarily recalling Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry food from the market. Hill's is taking this precautionary action because during a two-month period in early 2007, wheat gluten for this product was provided by a company that also supplied wheat gluten to Menu Foods. U.S. Food and Drug Administration tests of wheat gluten samples from this period show the presence of a small amount of melamine. Prescription Diet m/d Feline Dry represents less than one half of one percent of all Hill's products.

This is the only product Hill's currently sells in the United States and Canada that contains wheat gluten from any supplier. No other Hill's Prescription Diet® or Science Diet® products are affected by this voluntary recall. Hill's Science Diet Savory Cuts Feline canned cat foods, manufactured by Menu Foods, were previously withdrawn from the market as a precaution. Together with this earlier withdrawal, less than 1% of all Hill's products have been affected.

The voluntary recall of Hill's Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry food involves discontinuation of all retail sales and product retrieval from sellers. This recall does not include Prescription Diet m/d Feline canned food which contains no wheat gluten.

Consumers should stop using this product and return it for a refund. All Hill's products carry a 100 percent guarantee, and consumers can receive a refund for recalled product.

Hill's expects to resume shipment shortly of a reformulated version of this highly beneficial product that will not contain wheat gluten. Please check with your veterinarian for an alternative Prescription Diet until m/d Feline dry is reformulated and made available again.

Following is a list of Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry products included in this recall:

Hill's has been fully cooperating with the FDA since the outset of its investigation and made the decision to voluntarily recall these products in consultation with the FDA. We deeply regret any concern that this has caused our valued customers.

For more information, consumers can contact the company at 1-800-445-5777 or visit www.HillsPet.com for details.

This is all so scary. I've put all my dogs on Pedigree. So far they have been recall-free.

Not sure if I should take her off. I know they say it's not dog food that's effect, but let's face it it, our pets are our babies.

They are recalling their m/d. For 2 years, I've been feeding my cat the c/d. I'm a little worried.

Where does it say that the glutton was imported from CHINA, they must have left that part out. Oh, well no problem.

I used the BARF diet on my Siberian Husky because he refused to eat dog food. He lost so much weight that his hair fell out so the Vet said to try BARF. It worked great for him but was way too much work for me with my schedule. I gave him to a man that was familiar with the diet.

My dogs all get table scrap treats in moderation and I'm starting to think it's not such a bad idea after all. LOL

The BARF diet includes garlic!

Every dog owner (particularly Lab owners) should avoid garlic in your dogs food!

Otherwise you might run into unexplained green cloud formations, peeling of paint, disappearing friends etc.

We've started making rice and meat for our beagles in light of this recall. It works nicely with my female beagle's diet of Tums, Chapstick, Vaseline, peanuts, and the bottom half of our basement door.

After all I've been reading I am going to start making my two dogs and one cat's food myself.

I have an aunt who feeds her Yorkie NOTHING but meat, and the dog is about 18 years old. She's blind, and runs into things, and stays constipated (the dog, not my aunt LOL). But otherwise, she's healthy.

My aunt went into the hospital once and I kept her dog for her. I crushed Kellogs Corn Flakes and Bran flakes into her food and had her having regular and firm bowl movements.

What is a BARF diet?

"What is a BARF diet?"

Bones And Raw Food. The acronym actually stands for another term I don't recall at the moment, but I gave you the simple translation. And it's starting to sound like a better alternative to manufactured pet "food" off the shelf all the time...

Look into a company called Prairie. There are others, as well as make-your-own recipes out there.

The mercury scare of the 60's kicked that off, but i figured tuna was better than feeding them half a can of wheat ash mixed with half a can of who knows what with paste as a juice. :-)

Thanks so much.

Although I have always fed my dogs commercial dry food, they have me so wrapped around their paws I do give them bones and table scraps, it's easier than watching them plead with me. My vets, over many years, have said I am almost abusing them giving them people food.

A while back I found some beef ribs and froze them to eat myself. Last week we barbequed steak and and I knew they'd be begging, so I took the beef ribs out (I bought them on sale, a bargain) and I barbequed them for the dogs to eat while we ate our steaks.

They are still unburying the bones and chewing on them, trying to send me a message that they are being deprived by not getting these everyday.

Dogs love bones so much. I tell them, when I'm planning on barbequing, that they are going to get a "bone" and they go crazy. Anytime that barbeque grill is fired up they get fired up.

We do barf our dogs but also feed some Science diet kibble and we tried barf for our cats but it was so complicated and required some extra supplements and, of course, they refused to eat it so we feed Science Diet but not the prescription stuff and Bob the cat often and I'm guessing daily, dines out on little furry critters in our yard.

Hills MD wet and dry was what my cat was on until we ran out sometime this year. You have to get it from a vet and the Bide-a-Wee clinic here just up and one day fired most of their vets and became a shelter only.

I thought Hills was supposed to be good. MD is a weight reduction diet but they recommended my cat eat one-eighth of a cup only twice a day. She nagged us so much and went destructive (tearing up papers), we kept slipping her more. She gained 2 pounds and has a heart murmur now.

From reading here I went out and bought Pet's Promise. Prior to that we were giving here assorted Friskies dry and canned. I always look for the cans to be at least 10% protein (So that is usually seafood). Cats are carnivores. I hate reading the rice and peas as ingredients. She didn't care much for that after a time. I also found a weevil in the measuring scoop in the container

At first I thought the Pet's Promise was phony BS as there is brown rice in it. Not something cats need. And one vet told me cats and horses are the only animals that make their own vitamin C. So why stick that in there?

This cat liked the Hills MD. I think it is rich in fat (for a dry food it had a greasiness to it), which they like. And she loves the smells of table food but doesn't want it if I give it to her.

Now that I bought all this Pet's Promise, she's turned her nose up at it and wants only the dry Purina One Senior I'm using up. I hope the Promise weight management is what she likes.

Years ago after there was a sort of scandal in cat food when they found out that taurine was necessary for a cat's heart. But it was missing from the vet sold Hills Science diet, which I was feeding that to my two cats. Then my 6 year old Balinese walked into the kitchen stretched and dropped dead. It took me a long time to trust Hills again. ...Anybody know if they sell canned mouse or bird? (sarcasm)

I know most Freepers probably are mindful of this, but check where the Easter candy is made that the kids want. Push-pops among others are now MADE in CHINA. I won't buy any foods made in China. These foods are not tested until there is a problem. If you notice the colors of the candies are extremely bright. I wonder if they use dyes banned here. It limits the Easter Basket choices, but read the label for country of origin.

The BARF (Bones and Raw Food) diet is good for dogs but you have to have time to do it. The real name is "biologically appropriate raw food". We bought large bags of bones from the slaughter house and kept them in the freezer. He would eat tripe, pig tails, pig ears, and even chicken wings, among other raw types of food. We got a lot of low priced meat trimmings and "offal" (internal organs like liver, etc.) from the slaughter house also. The Vet said the chicken wings and beef/pork bones were fine as long as they were uncooked. Cooked bones become brittle and can do damage. Raw fruit and veggies are good too but stay away from grain products.

The concept is that for millions of years the ancestors of dogs ate raw food, not processed food. They ate all kinds of raw meat and vegetables. It's just getting back to that process in the modern world.

Here is a link that explains it.

FUNNY THING is "we" didn't know our "premium food" was manufactured at the same place generic "food" was maunfactured. Was it labeled: MADE IN CANADA with a sub-contractor in CHINA? Does anyone, anywhere, have a package of this "food" that says IMPORTED from CANADA with ingredients imported from CHINA (or wherever)? I think not. I know the cans of 22 oz canned food did not have any mention of Canada or China on it, as a matter of fact the recall was for 5 oz and 12 oz cans? And only IF YOU went to the site you would see 22 oz on the LIST. This makes me very very angry and I hope these "people" come clean and come clean in the near future. Luck to all and your 4 legged family members.

“After all I've been reading I am going to start making my two dogs and one cat's food myself.”

Could you please share any cat recipes? I’m feeding my cats boiled chicken breasts, raw ground beef, and tuna fish (in water). They don’t like the oil. The cat food recipes that I found on Google are a little strange for my cats.

My best wishes.

Thank you.

I called Pedigree and they assured me their food was safe. Went to the store the other day and only Pedigree and Purina canned food was on the shelves, all others had disappeared. We've been feeding food that we cooked ourselves, but it seemed to not set too well with their bowels. So we've started using Purina canned. They both like lit.

Our Pepperdog, my FR namesake, died on Monday. She was the one that had been eating the Shep, which was on the list. I can't say it killed her as she was sick anyway, but I'm sure it was a contributor as sick animals are bound to be more sensitive to poison. She was the best dog who ever lived, the most graceful, the most intelligent and sensitive. Sure wish I had her still.

I was watching all this from afar last week, but not now. After losing a kitty last December to CRF, my vet called last week and told me she had rescued a cat that she and her partner (fellow vet, not other kind ;-))thought would be perfect for me. They had already spayed, vacinnated and treated this kitty who appears to be about a year old. I met her and she put her paw on my shoulder and gave me a kiss on the cheek so you know it was all over and she came home with me--with a bag of Science Diet! It's not the m/d formulation, but still, I'm wondering what the heck I ought to be feeding her. My other kitty was a Fancy Feast slut--I may go back to the one, cheap grocery store food that doesn't seem to have been on anyone's recall list!

I got through to Hill's yesterday morning and talked to a nice gentleman who explained it all to my satisfaction. Prior to calling Hills I went on to their site and researched the complete ingredients of all of the dry cat and dog food I have every used from Prescription diet and found that the only one that had wheat gluten WAS the Feline Dry MD. All of the others use corn gluten. This is exactly what he told me without me telling him I had done the research. I was concerned since I feed my dog the WD Dry Canine.
