It's time that historical perspective and precedent, as well as toe to toe squaring off against a tyrant are applied in the Persian Gulf IMHO. As Teddy Roosevelt showed us, and has been shown coutless times since, one must stand up to tyrants and make them fear for their lives when they begin their bullying and tyranical ways.
So, Iran, the options are simple and the full might of the UK and her allies, principally the United States, should stand behind a direct statement like this...
72 Hours. Faye Turney and the other UK personnel alive...or Ahmadinejad dead!
But their safety cannot be purchased, indeed it MUST not be purchased, at the cost of emboldening an abject tyrant to run amok, unchecked and become a force that will threaten and kill millions more later.
FYI
Our old "friends" at the old kgb used to give great heart attacks for a living. Why marter the son of a snake, when a stroke or heart attack works better!
Short response: Bump!
While Tony Blair is no Margeret Thatcher, he is definitely no Sunny Jim Callahan. Don't ever underestimate Britain. Galteiri of Argentina did in 1982.
I wish YOU'D run for President. You'd win, hands down.
Prayers for the Brits...and all of us.
If memory serves, we still owe them a one-way ticket to the revelation that Mohammed lied to them.
Tough talk doesn't happen any more. Not from the West, anyway.
Heck, Dr. Rice is in the ME now giving away as much of the Israeli land holdings as she can to the Palestinians.
Blair has already waited too long to 'act'. That window closed days ago. Now, all he can do is seek terms to negotiate, either direct or through the UN.
None of our leradership has the guts. And for that reason we will all pay a terrible price.
The leaders of the free world are a bunch of chickens.
Our heavyweights could give Iran a knock out blow in round one and we wouldn't have to worry about them for many many years. We may just have to kill some good people in Iran to save some better people in the free world.
Come on leaders. QUIT BEING FRIGGIN CHICKENS!!
Otherwise, as you say, we shall all pay dearly for this coddling and emboldening.
I don't think it's chicken... as much as waiting to see what the Iranians plan, and slowly ratcheting up the pressure to make them give up the prisoners. My own response would be to capture and hold Iran's oil platforms in the Gulf and release them only when the prisoners are released. That should be a step taken soon.
If we come in after President IwannaMakeJihad...the leading Mullahs will iknow intrinsically, in the pits of their gut, that we are coming for them too.
And in that case, it had the desired effect.
For decades thereafter, no tin horn would mess with American citizens around the world without knowing they were doing so at the peril of their very lives.
Time for that class to once again be in session so these tin horns can learn that lesson again.
Looks like they tried to grab some American soldiers.
Enemies are becoming embolden but they still know our Navy and our soldiers will fire back at them. Nonetheless, that is not helped when smugglers and criminals on our own border fire upon and chase off our own national guard from their duties.
IMHO, it's time we held class on these very fundamental lessons again.
Mine as well.
I am for any action as long as it isn't "talks" or "negotiations". Iran kept our embassy hostages for almost two years and used the world stage to build up resistance to the west. They were able to hold off the great satan and that provided the inspiration for jihad all over.
No talks. Action. And no restraint.
Taking their oil platforms would probably send oil over 75.00 a barrell for awhile. I don't mind paying the price if something is actually accomplished because oil prices will go much lower if the situation in the ME is stabilized and Iran neutralized.
We'll see what happens. Perhaps we will see what Tony Blair is made of.
