Sheriff: Man Shot 2 on Way to Game
COLUMBIA, S.C. - A man killed a 60-year-old woman and shot a store clerk to get cars on his way to see his brother, who was playing football at the University of South Carolina, authorities said Saturday.
Demetrius M. Pepper, 24, was arrested outside of the stadium where the team was playing a scrimmage game, Newberry County deputies said. His brother, Nathan Pepper, is a rising junior defensive lineman for the Gamecocks.
Deputies said the elder Pepper stole his first car after shooting its owner at a Greenville convenience store around 7:45 a.m. Saturday. The car broke down, so he went to the home of 60-year-old Ellie Halfarce looking for another vehicle, Sheriff Lee Foster said.
He rang the doorbell and forced his way in after Halfacre answered, fatally shooting her before taking another vehicle, Foster said.
"There were two cars in the yard that had keys in them. All he had to do was take the car. He didn't have to go in and kill her over a car," Foster said.
The convenience store owner was taken to a hospital, authorities said. A condition was not available.
Demetrius Pepper was charged with murder in Newberry County and assault and battery with intent to kill and possession of a weapon during a violent crime in Greenville County, authorities said.
A woman identifying herself as Pepper's mother answered the phone at a Greenville home, but said she wouldn't comment.
does SC have the death penalty?
Someone with a gun could have stopped this guy dead in his tracks.
Libs: This killer needs tolerance and compassion, not a needle.
I believe they do.
The old Head Ball Coach better be careful if he tries to recruit too many thugs to Columbia.
"Wanna arrive in style!"
I'm amazed she didn't give the standard speech about what a fine young church-going man he was.
Is there a section where we can read the comments that were "removed by the moderator"?
They were probably a lot of fun and closer to the un PC truth.
Demetrius? Was he Greek or Roman perhaps?
And I thought only Texas was crazy about football.
Jesse hadn't faxed it to her yet.
Prayers for the scumbag's victims.
"Demetrius? Was he Greek or Roman perhaps?"
..sometimes called "Da Meat"....Demetrius is rumored to have changed his name from "Rabbi Finklestein" when he converted to Islam.....
What happened to values..?
I guess we are lucky that it wasn't a playoff game.
How did they catch the guy?
But he did not shoot the Deputy.
At the golf course I shot a hole in one. If he was in Philadelphia this guy would still be under par.
Welcome to the Southeastern Conference. Gamecock football isn’t just a way of life in Columbia, it’s the biggest religion in town (the Baptists can’t quite seem to beat it).
And yes, thankfully, South Carolina has the death penalty, and shows little reluctance to use it.
