“’Hate Crimes’ Bill Moving to Full House”
By Susan Jones

April 26, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Silencing Christians?

Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) proposed an amendment protecting freedom of religion: “Nothing in this section limits the religious freedom of any person or group under the constitution,” the amendment read, but that, too, was defeated.

Conservatives, including Rep. Louis Gohmert (R-Tex.), worry that religious leaders who denounce homosexuality as a sin may be charged with incitement under the legislation.

“By refusing to accept this amendment the Democrats on this committee have proven their purpose, to remove freedom of religion from the U.S. Constitution,” said Sheldon.

“It is evident what HR 1592 is about,” Sheldon added.

“It is not about homosexuals and cross dressers suffering with no food, shelter or jobs, it is about preventing Bible-believing people and pastors from speaking the truth. It is about punishing them so they will not dare to speak the truth. It is about threatening them with prison so they won’t dare speak the truth.””

Captured Al-Qaeda leader masterminded 7/7 London bombings
More on this story. “7/7 ‘mastermind’ is seized in Iraq,” by Sean O’Neill, Tim Reid and Michael Evans for the TimesOnline, with thanks to James:

The al-Qaeda leader who is thought to have devised the plan for the July 7 suicide bombings in London and an array of terrorist plots against Britain has been captured by the Americans.

Abd al-Hadi al-Iraqi, a former major in Saddam Hussein’s army, was apprehended as he tried to enter Iraq from Iran and was transferred this week to the “high-value detainee programme” at Guantanamo Bay.

Abd al-Hadi was taken into CIA custody last year, it emerged from US intelligence sources yesterday, in a move which suggests that he was interrogated for months in a “ghost prison” before being transferred to the internment camp in Cuba.

Abd al-Hadi, 45, was regarded as one of al-Qaeda’s most experienced, most intelligent and most ruthless commanders. Senior counter-terrorism sources told The Times that he was the man who, in 2003, identified Britain as the key battleground for exporting al-Qaeda’s holy war to Europe.

Abd al-Hadi recognised the potential for turning young Muslim radicals from Britain who wanted to become mujahidin in Afghanistan or Iraq into terrorists who could carry out attacks in their home country. He realised that their knowledge of Britain, possession of British passports and natural command of English made them ideal recruits. After al-Qaeda restructured its operations in Pakistan’s tribal areas he sought out young Britons for instruction at training camps. In late 2004 Abd al-Hadi met Mohammad Sidique Khan and Shehzad Tanweer, from Leeds, at a militant camp in Pakistan and, in the words of a senior investigator, “retasked them” to become suicide bombers.

They were sent back to Britain where they led the terrorist cell that carried out the 7/7 bombings, killing 52 Tube and bus passengers.

“Sri Lanka rebels in new air raid”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Tamil Tiger rebels have carried out an air raid on targets in and around Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo.

Two fuel facilities were bombed in what the rebels said was in response to an army strike on their positions.

One gas storage depot was set ablaze, officials said. It is not clear if there were any casualties.

Authorities turned off Colombo’s power, as large crowds gathered to watch Sri Lanka play Australia in cricket’s World Cup final.

Hours after the attack, Sri Lankan Air Force jets pounded Tiger-held areas in an effort to destroy their aircraft.

During the raid on the capital, government troops fired anti-aircraft guns and cut power to Colombo, its airport and an adjoining army base.

The public had been warned to be on guard after the Tigers unveiled their own “air force” with two deadly aerial bombings in the space of a month.”

(CBS 5 / KCBS / BCN) OAKLAND

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The oil tanker had exploded and triggered a fire at 3:42 a.m. on the section of freeway known as the MacArthur Maze. The Oakland Fire Dept. said the blaze had been extinguished by about 5:50 a.m.

Firefighters had to contend with extreme heat in battling the blaze; that heat was blamed for causing the connector collapse.

San Jose-based structural engineer John Coyle said the intense heat likely compromised the integrity of the steel that supported the connector ramp, causing it to melt.

Damage to the freeway was extensive and estimated to be in the millions of dollars, Oakland Fire Battlion Chief Mike Miller said. The CHP said it could be days, if not months, before traffic resumed as usual on the damaged stretch of road.

The driver of the tanker was hospitalized, suffering from second degree burns. No other injuries were immediately reported.”

Iranian official: Zionist regime vulnerable

Published: 04.29.07, 17:15 / Israel News

A senior Iranian military official said that the Zionist regime was very vulnerable as far as Iran was concerned. “Olmert knows that the response to 1,000 missiles will be thousands of missiles,” Iranian military commander Alireza Afshar said, commenting on Olmert’s interview with the German Focus magazine.

“The Zionist regime’s army, which was defeated by a few thousand Hizbullah members in the space of 200 kilometers, can not be a threat against Iran,” Afsahr said. (Dudi Cohen)

72 SUSPECTED TERRORISTS DETAINED

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition Forces captured 72 suspected terrorists and discovered bomb-making materials Sunday during a constellation of overnight raids targeting the al-Qaeda in Iraq network.

In a massive synchronized effort, Coalition Forces descended on targets in Anbar and Salah ad Din provinces to disrupt the al-Qaeda network. Operations in Samarra alone uncovered 36 individuals with alleged ties to al-Qaeda terrorists.

Near Karmah, intelligence reports led Coalition Forces to 20 five-gallon drums of nitric acid and other bomb-making materials.

“Coalition operations like these continue to chip away at the al-Qaeda in Iraq network, and we will continue to target them as long as they continue to injure and kill the innocent people of Iraq,” said Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, MNF-I spokesperson.

You’re right. I had forgotten about that synagogue incident. I mostly remember the churches being targeted by arsonists in the south. I should save my sarcasm for another arena. It’s never funny when (any) houses of worship are being targeted.

“It’s never funny when (any) houses of worship are being targeted.”

I understand.

Actually, the targeting of houses of worship (in the USA and abroad) gets
very little media coverage/attention with the exception of the a few details
after an initial incident occurs. This makes it easy for us to forget the details of these incidents if one believes the adage — out of sight; out of mind.

Large cache of bomb ingredients seized in Iraq; Islamic State of Iraq gives Samarra police 3 days to “repent” or die
“Iraq raids net al Qaeda suspects, bomb ingredients,” from CNN:

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) — U.S. and Iraqi troops found 100 gallons of nitric acid and other bomb-making materials Sunday during raids that yielded the arrests of 72 suspected members of the al Qaeda in Iraq network, the U.S. military said.

The “constellation of overnight raids” was conducted in Anbar and Salaheddin provinces, the military said.

“Coalition operations like these continue to chip away at the al Qaeda in Iraq network, and we will continue to target them as long as they continue to injure and kill the innocent people of Iraq,” said U.S. military spokesman Lt. Col. Christopher Garver.

Half of those arrested were captured during raids in Samarra, in Salaheddin province north of Baghdad, according to the military. The nitric acid and bomb-making ingredients were found during a raid in Karmah.

The Samarra arrests came as authorities banned all movement in the city in response to recent threats, most notably a threatened suicide attack on the Samarra bridge, a security official said.

Jihad against electricity and flood prevention:

The Samarra bridge has a dam that generates power and regulates water levels on the Tigris River.

The city went on high alert after the Islamic State of Iraq — the insurgent umbrella group that includes al Qaeda in Iraq — distributed leaflets to police in Samarra on Saturday, warning them that they have three days to “repent” or be killed.

The insurgent group also told police to use loudspeakers at mosques and marketplaces to announce their rejection of the “apostate state.”
A daylight curfew went into effect at 6 a.m. (10 p.m. Saturday ET) until further notice, the official said.

Two hours after the curfew took effect, a group of gunmen traveling in about 30 vehicles attacked a convoy of fuel tankers just outside Samarra, kidnapping the drivers of 16 trucks and setting fire to the vehicles, a Tikrit police official said.

Forces Capture 21 Suspected Al Qaeda in Iraq Members

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, April 29, 2007 – U.S. troops captured 21 suspected terrorists April 28 in Iraq during a series of raids across the country that targeted al Qaeda in Iraq, military officials said.

“We’re achieving a deliberate, systematic disruption in the al Qaeda in Iraq network,” said Lt. Col. Christopher Garver, Multinational Force Iraq spokesman, said.

The captures “will slow al Qaeda’s ability to target and harm the people of Iraq,” Garver said.

Coalition forces netted six suspects during an operation conducted northwest of Karmah, Iraq. The detainees reportedly are linked to murders, kidnappings, attacks on coalition forces and the manufacture of improvised explosive devices, officials said.

Another two suspects were nabbed southeast of al Asad, including one person suspected of being an intelligence officer for al Qaeda in Iraq, officials said.

Two more captured suspected terrorists have alleged al Qaeda ties, officials noted, and are linked to the recent bombing of the Sarafiyah Bridge in Baghdad.

Another four suspected terrorists were detained in Mosul by coalition troops. Those detainees are accused of distributing weapons to al Qaeda in Iraq agents and of operating terror network that employed vehicle-borne IEDs, officials said.

Three other suspected terrorists were captured during a raid east of Balad, Iraq, and coalition forces captured four more suspected terrorists during a raid in Baghdad’s Sadr-City section April 28, officials said.

The recent captures illustrate the coalition’s determination to put added pressure on al Qaeda operatives in Iraq and elsewhere, officials said.

Pentagon officials announced April 27 that senior al Qaeda leader Abdul Hadi al-Iraqi had been captured last fall and is now being held at the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

In other Iraq news, coalition aircraft destroyed a truck laden with explosives April 27 during nighttime strike just east of Karmah, Iraq, officials said.

The truck had been stopped and searched by U.S. Marines at a checkpoint, who’d discovered the vehicle was loaded with explosives. Marine fighter jets used precision-guided munitions to destroy the truck.

Also, U.S. and Iraqi soldiers found a weapons cache during a patrol west of al Iskandariyah, Iraq, on April 27. The cache contained mortar equipment, a machine gun, a rifle, 75 hand grenades and other items.

In a separate operation, Iraqi and U.S. soldiers found a large weapons cache in Baghdad’s Ghazaliya district April 26.

The cache yielded 127 mortar tubes, 15 hand grenades, 13 rifles, three anti-tank mines, more than 200 pounds of dynamite, small-arms ammunition, 150 fuses, and other items, officials said.

The Iraqi soldiers also detained seven suspected terrorists during the raid.

(Information compiled from Multinational Force Iraq and Multinational Corps Iraq news releases.)
