Eight In One Announces Nationwide Recall of All Lots Of Dingo® Chick’n Jerky Treats for Dogs, Cats And Ferrets

Contact: Jamie Tully Victoria Hofsted 212-687-8080

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Cincinnati, Ohio -- March 30, 2007 -- Eight In One, Inc., a division of United Pet Group, Inc., is voluntarily recalling nationally all lots of Dingo® CHICK'N JERKY treats due to Company concerns that the jerky treats have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, which can cause serious infections in dogs and cats, and, if there is cross contamination, in people, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems. The Food and Drug Administration is aware of this recall.

The products affected were sold at Target, PetSmart and other retailers. The products subject to this voluntary recall are Dingo CHICK'N JERKY 3.5 oz. and 8 oz. for dogs and Dingo Kitty CHICKEN JERKY 1.5 oz. for cats and Dingo Ferret CHICKEN JERKY 1.5 oz for ferrets.

Laboratory testing has shown that some samples of these chicken jerky treats were contaminated with Salmonella. The company is recalling all these products out of an abundance of caution.

Salmonella can potentially be transferred to people handling these pet treats, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products. Healthy people infected with Salmonella can have some or all of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers..

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Apparently well animals can be a carrier and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

The company has received one report of Salmonellosis in a dog. There are no reports of human illness.

These products are being removed from retail stores. Consumers should immediately stop feeding these treats to their pets.

Consumers who purchased any of the above-identified CHICK'N JERKY TREATS should discontinue use of the products and should discard the unused portion. Consumer can obtain information on receiving refunds by contacting the Eight In One consumer affairs department at 1-888-232-9889.

One of my dogs loves the Dingo Goof Balls. He's been vomiting a lot lately and is not feeling well today. I wonder if I should stop giving them to him.

Been feeding my dogs (2 of them, combined 30 years so far) nothing but Purina Dog Chow and Milk Bones (with occasional table scraps). So far, so good.

BTTT

I don't usually bump my owns threads, but this isn't JUST about pets now, it's getting more serious and frightening (read below).

"Healthy people infected with Salmonella can have some or all of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. This is another type of tainted food, and can be spread to humans, and even picked up via HANDLING the product. Think about this as far as persons sick and with compromised immune systems.

Better to be safe than sorry.

I've put my dogs on a chicken, carrot and rice diet. I don't trust any dogfood products right now. We even made our own dog biscuits. It's kind of a pain, but worth the peace of mind.

My husband is picking up a bag of Nature's Logic dry food on his way home from work today. Another Freeper reccomended it as a good brand.

I was just thinking I should just start cooking their food myself. I did it for fourteen years for our other dog because of a stomach illness he had.

Right now they eat Wellness dry food and Nature's Variety Freeze Dried Chicken and Turkey.

I am concerned about the treat though and will stop giving them to him until I find out more. Maybe it's time for a trip to the vet.

I think Terrorists must have hit the dog food supply just to show us what they can do. This is ridiculous.

I may be overeacting (naw) but I just called my vet to tell them about this latest recall. They are not on the internet and took all the info over the phone, plus some link addresses I picked up from freepers on another thread about this subject, so they can have someone check them out.

The assistant told me that they had to cancel all vaccinations and routine appts. today because they have the vet hospital FULL of sick dogs and cats with symptoms from the wheat gluton. She said this is NOT normal and she fears it will get lots worse.

I asked when the sick pets owners said was the last they fed their pets food from the recall lists, and she said they told them different times, one as recently as Thursday.

I live in a small town, very rural county, and if this is happening here it is serious. Contact your vets and ask them how many cases they have. The vets assistant said they are overwhelmed, and they think it WILL get worse, they are expecting more cases.

fine but the concern is for people who handle the dog food which has signs of sam and ella. It's not any different than the rule to wash your hands after handling raw turkey or chicken.

I agree with this. I think it a test run just to see if they could. Muslims consider dogs and cats 'unclean', and want them destroyed. As a pet owner I know that if this is what has happened, there will be blood in the streets. What's next? Pepsi? Coke? Budweiser?

Right now, I'm cooking for all of my dogs and cats, or reading every label for 'Wheat Gluten' When this is over, if the pet food industry wants me to trust them again I want to see the CEO on TV eating the product, or I'm not buying it.

Fancy Feast slices with gravy has "wheat Gluten" in it, and I'm not going to take a chance. I just took 10 cans back to the store, and they didn't give me any problems about it.

Check your labels before feeding anything to your furry friends.

Salmonella is far from uncommon in jerky.

I'm a big jerky eater, (Boy,That can be taken a few different ways, huh?)... Love the stuff.

But several times a year I hear of recalls of the stuff intended for people due to salmonella or other similar nasty bugs, so I'd imagine that it is more common in pet treats due to slightly less rigid standards.

You think so? What will we call this new tactic they've chosen... "hasslism"? "worryism"? "irritationism"?

Somehow I don't think it'll have the same impact as blowing things up and killing people.

The thing about terror attacks is, they don't look like regular, everyday mishaps. Salmonella is a very common bacteria.

"...Importantly, no Purina brand dry pet foods are affected by the recall – including ALPO Prime Cuts dry. In addition, no other Purina dog food products, no Purina cat food products, Purina treat products or Purina Veterinary Diet products are included in this recall, nor have been impacted by the contaminated wheat gluten supply."

Salmonella can potentially be transferred to people handling these pet treats, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Good grief. That's a completely different reason for the recall. Since we've had to accept food that does not have inspections and is therefore out of reach of the FDA, our food chain and that of our pets have become deadly. Our pets have died and people have died eating bad food from other countries. Like Mexico!!

I'm very angry at the globalists in our government for putting us all in harms way because of their greed! I only hope that those responsible and their families are the next ones to get sick. Maybe then they will stop the importation of foods from other countries who are poisoning us.

I know it sounds crazy but what I want to know is why no one in any other countries keeps getting sick and dying from this tainted food? I haven't heard of it if there have been other countries affected. It's almost as if someone is purposely trying to kill us.

Sorry it took me a while to reply had to go work out. We feed him ground turkey and rice for years, later adding egg and bread per the vet. It really helped his stomach and he lived for almost 15 years until he finally died of kidney failure.

I’ll do it again if I have too. More time consumming but cheaper.

We’re going to quit giving him the dingos and see how he does. He seems to be a little better this evening.

I agree with this. I think it a test run just to see if they could. Muslims consider dogs and cats 'unclean', and want them destroyed.

It may also be that they want to get back at Americans, who they know are pet lovers.

If they can blithely kill children, or use them as pawns, why not animals?

I know I have an active imagination, but I really am starting to wonder.

This falls under the category of: Um, DUH !!

People, people, people: If YOU eat something that makes you sick, do you keep eating it??? Why do people see their pets get sick off specific foods but keep feeding it to them anyway??? On another message board, a woman posted the same thing - dog “always gets sick when I give him this treat” but she “keeps checking the internet to see if it’s on the recall list.” !!! She needs some official notification to tell her that her dog is sick when she can SEE that he’s sick??

Stop feeding the food or treat that makes your pets sick and get them to the Vet ASAP.

THOUSANDS of pets have died from the Menu Foods (and related) recalls. This is not the time to wait and see if a pet shows symptoms after eating - EVEN IF IT’S A FOOD THAT IS NOT (YET) ON A RECALL LIST.
