'Slap in the Face': Republicans in Damascus Hold to Bush 'Strategy'; Meet with Opposition Leader
Open Source Center Summary | April 2, 2007 | unattributed

Syrian Papers on US Republican Representatives' Meetings, Statement in Damascus

Originally published on 4/2/2007 by Syria -- OSC Summary in Arabic

The three official Syrian daily newspapers -- Al-Ba'th, Tishrin, and Al-Thawrah -- on 2 April publish only the two Syrian News Agency reports on the separate meetings that Republican House of Representative members Frank Wolf, Joe Pitts, and Robert Aderholt separately held with President Bashar al-Asad and Foreign Minister Walid al-Mu'allim in Damascus on 1 April. They offer no further reporting and make no comment.

Damascus Al-Watan in Arabic, a private newspaper, on 2 April publishes, in addition to the SANA reports, a report on the statement that the three representatives issued after their meetings in Damascus. The report quotes the statement saying: "During all our meetings, we raised the need to prevent foreign fighters who kill innocent American and Iraqi soldiers from entering Iraq via Syria and the need to halt support for Hizballah and HAMAS and to recognize Israel's right to exist in peace and security and to stop interference in Lebanon." The report also cites the statement saying that the delegation met with "businessmen, religious leaders, former opposition political prisoner Riyad Sayf, and other members in the Syrian civil society."

In another 400-word article in Al-Watan, Thana al-Imam says: "The statement that three US Republican Congressmen issued at the end of a visit to Damascus was something like a slap in the face of the hoped-for dialogue between Syria and the United States."

The writer notes that the American statement "contained no reference to the need to achieve a just and comprehensive peace in the region and strongly supported President George Bush's strategy in Iraq." She says the congressmen's call for stopping support for Hizballah and HAMAS, preventing fighters from crossing into Iraq, recognizing Israel's right to live in peace, and refraining from intervening in Lebanon means that "we are back to square one. For, these American demands have not changed for more than three years."

The writer says the statement also "achieved an American objective through the announcement that the representatives met with Riyad Sayf, former People's Assembly member, especially since the US administration allocated funds to support the Syrian opposition, something that Damascus does not view with satisfaction."

She says observers believe that the only positive thing in the Congressmen's statement was their call for a strong diplomatic effort to address the unresolved issues in the region. And even here, she adds, the Congressmen failed to specify that the main problem in the region is the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Noting that the official Syrian report on the representatives' meeting with President Al-Asad was "very brief," the writer says this "proves that the representatives' visit to Damascus was not as successful as was hoped for."

Concluding her article, Al-Imam says: "Pending the arrival in Damascus of Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic speaker of the House of Representatives, it is clear that Syria is left with no option but to wager on the contradictions between the Republican Party at the head of the White House and the Democratic Party at the head of Congress to serve its interests, especially through search for solutions to the issue of the just and comprehensive peace, to start with."

Syria has no doubt about the RATS being on their side to serve the interest of THEIR country - & they come right out and say so!!

How despicable that we have troops fighting & dying for OUR county who are being betrayed by their own countrymen!!

The House members were Virginia Republican Frank Wolf, Pennsylvania Republican Joe Pitts and Alabama Republican Robert Aderholt. See WaPo/AP article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/04/01/AR2007040100314.html

It is good the Pubbies got there first to promote the President’s strategy in Iraq, Syria and Lebanon. Now we will see if anyone besides the WaPo reports this visit which took place ahead of Pelosi’s visit, no doubt to upstage the demos appearance.

Interesting article. Thanks for the link. I think your reading is right: the Republicans (and I didn’t even know they were going) got there first to urge Syria to end its support of terrorism (like that’s going to happen), and thus diluting the effect of GrannyNanny’s visit. And I didn’t know we have an embassy there. I thought we cut off diplomatic relations with Syria. There’s lots I don’t know; that much is clear.

That'll happen right after a pack of rabid howler monkeys with day glow wings fly out of my backside.

I've a better idea.

Kill Assad. Kill his entire family. Kill the guy who cooked his breakfast this morning. Then kill that guys family.

Pound Damascus into smoking ruins until not one stone stands atop another.

Then dig Assads corpse out of the rubble and plant his head on a pike outside the gates of Camp LeJeune and use what's left of his corpse for Marine Recruit bayonet training.

I think those are reasonable actions. Don't you?

I, for one, believe that your recommended actions are entirely unreasonable and doomed to failure.

Digging corpses out of the ground after bombing is a course frought with uncertainty. Often those at the center of the blast are scattered into such small pieces that the body is not recoverable. As such, promising our fine young men in the Marine Corps such training and then being unable to deliver is not properly supportive of our troops.

On the other hand, sometimes precision bombing can unexpectedly miss the desired target.

Therefore, I submit this alternate plan:

Step 1.

Step 2.

For once I must admit to an error in my planning.

You're completely correct.

I got carried away with the very pleasant thought of Assads head on a pike thus avenging the murders of 283 of my brothers.

I'll try to be more circumspect in the future.

Not to worry. Your brothers in the MAWs are equipped with the nuclear capable F/A-18 Super Hornet.

I'm sure one of them would be proud to step up and deliver a package to Damascus.

My brother-in-law is an Aviation Ordinanceman in the Corps. I'm sure he'd be proud to volunteer to load it.

See Step 2 above. ;)

I spent some time on the Ike with VFA-204. And on the AVT-16 U.S.S. Lexington with VA-204 before that. And on U.S.S. Forrestal with VF-201 before that. Of course, that was a few years back.

But I'd still volunteer to attach a B61. Of course I'm older and wiser now. Thusly, it would take me a bit longer and I'm pickier about my beer. :)

I still have no clue as to who and why they went and whether the trip was meant to be secret and the b*tch revealed it to deflect criticism of her own triop.

is the RNC asleep at the wheel?

There might be a reason for that. Foreign diplomacy is an executive function. The reason why the Republicans are there is to counter our own enemy at home, Nancy Pelosi, which is a wise thing to do because of her visit. But having anyone outside of the executive doing this does not strengthen that branch which the president has worked hard to do during his presidency.
