“...politics are all about selling an image and to sell an image you need money...”

That’s because so many people running for office are lackluster wannabe leaders. They’re uninspiring, so they need to compensate by spending lots of cash on image enhancement. However, there are some who are natural leaders and focus on purpose, and while they still need some money to get the MESSAGE to the people, they don’t need to spend as much. Fred Thompson has a commanding presence just by walking into a room, and if you’ve ever heard him speak, you say to yourself: “There’s a STATESMAN, not a politician!”
If you’re still not convinced, about Fred’s prospects, remember that he has had years of exposure to the American people on TV; all of it positive.

Sure they do.....so do all the Idol and CSI viewers that don’t pay attention to anything outside of their lives. Ask 100 Americans if they know who Fred Thompson is and see how many know who Paris Hilton is and there’s your answer. You do know that the vast majority of Americans don’t pay attention to politics, don’t you?

I get it, you support Fred.

A priceless quote is claiming that money is a moot point in a United States Presidential election and calling those that live in the reality of the situation “idiots”.

Quite rich...

Kucinich raised millions but he didn’t raise enough millions to ever be a serious candidate.

This is where I just have to shake my head at your line of "reasoning", because that's exactly where it leads, to foolish statements like that.

No amount of money makes Dennis Kucinich a serious candidate.

And Dean spent his money poorly.

You keep saying that with no evidence. How many "No, I'm not an angry nutcase supported by angrier nutcases" commercials did you want him to run? Great loony left message, tons of money, flawed candidate. Did the voters say, "We don't like your campaign budget?" No, they said, "This is not the messenger we want, even though we like the message."

The top end candidates will always be the ones that raise the most.

Sure. But: cart, horse. You got it reversed. Top candidate leads to money, not the other way around.

No they’ll still need to spend a ton. Money is the way to get the message out. Fred’s not going to get to talk to us all individually so he has to get commercial time bought. Even the great communicator Reagan needed money and plenty of it to run a campaign.

I’m not saying anything about anybody’s prospects at this point. Just addressing the prospect that money isn’t important in politics. It is handily the most important thing, which is unfortunate because it’s lead to us being run by the biggest whores and most effective beggars, but that’s how it is.

If you'd like to be added to the Fred Thompson list, let Howlin or me know.

CAUTION: This is a very high volume ping list. You may receive between 5 and 10 pings a day. If you'd rather not receive so many pings, let me know and I'll only ping you once a week.

In the post Ross Perot era I find it hard to accept that anybody thinks there’s a candidate out there that can’t be made serious by money. If jumbo-eared squeaky-voiced goober with a bunch of slides can buy himself into the general election debates and split the conservative vote to give us 8 years of Clinton then clearly there is a quantity of money that can make anybody a serious candidate.

In Deans case it was buying the wrong commercials in the wrong markets trying to craft the wrong image, and believing the hype that he was some maverick with a chance.

Some candidates are good enough to draw money to themselves without a lot of effort, but even with them it’s going to just be a starter kernel. Eventually they have to go beat the bushes and scare up tons of cash. Period, it’s non-negotiable.

But, the Rudybots told me that Thompson was running to help McCain...how could he be taking McCain’s support?

Newts speeches on Cspan are ALL pregnant with very good ideas and analysis.. He is not satisfied with just face time he has ideas and positive direction..

Thompson is all face time or name recognition NO substance..
Thompson would make a good VeeP for Newt though..

Wonder if American women have the brains to see this...
Probably not..

McCain is pro-life, supports conservative judges, fiscal restraint, and the WOT.

Everything else, including money, and spending money, is tertiary at best.

You can't run a campaign without money. In the case of a presidential race, you need lots of it. If you aren't the media's favorite son or daughter, getting free publicity, you need even more of it.

Neither the message nor the messenger matter if you can't get in front of the public.

It's astounding how many Republicans do NOT realize what a 'mess' JulieAnnie is (reference his liberalism and his personal life). The only thing that many know--is his 'celebrity' TV status from 9/11.

As they become more acquainted with the fact that he is a GUN-GRABBING, PRO BIG-GOVT, PRO-ABORTION, PRO-AMNESTY, PRO-LITIGATION, GAY RIGHTS CRUSADER, who also believes in using our TAX MONEY FOR PUBLIC FUNDING OF ABORTION,,,,his support will drop (and IS dropping). I have had success with a few relatives who had no idea that he was so liberal. They, too, will never vote for him now (especially my PRO-SECOND AMDT brother-in-laws).

P.S. I didn't even have to mention his 'TRAIN WRECK' (aka his personal life) which almost makes Bill Clinton look like a decent family man and loving husband. Heck, even Slick didn't marry his cousin!....lol

He had the message. Much like Steve Forbes. Neither won, because the messenger was a) a crazy billionaire and b) a goofy publisher's son.

Neither the message nor the messenger matter if you can't get in front of the public.

O'Reely. Then how did a certain wacky nobody governor from Vermont come to the fore? If you've got the message, you'll have an audience, and enough of that the media will start covering you. Tom Tancredo gets plenty of attention from just his one issue. A one-issue message with a weak messenger doesn't make a presidential campaign, but that's the beginnings of how a serious long-shot makes it to the forefront, a la McCain in 2000. That was a low-budget campaign until he struck it big in the early primaries.

Oh well, don't let all this history get in the way of your version of conventional wisdom.

Ross didn’t have a message, Ross had a meme and a buttload of money.
