Who Got the British Sailors Released? By Catherine Mayer/London and Azadeh Moaveni/Tehran
The President of Iran was clearly relishing his role as beneficent liberator of the 15 British Marines and sailors detained by Iran for nearly two weeks. At a press conference today, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called the release a "gift to the British people" on the occasion of Easter as well as a commemoration of the Prophet Muhammad's birthday. The smiling President then met with the British detainees, nodding his head munificently as they lined up to offer thanks for their release. "It is for Islam," he reminded one. He joked to another: "You ended up on a compulsory visit, didn't you?"
As much as today's events appeared to be another episode of the Mahmoud Ahmadinejad show, the Iranian president's actual role in ending the crisis may have been less than meets the eye. The office of the presidency in Iran does not really have a say in matters of foreign policy. Indeed, British analysts were quick to credit another political personage for the resolution of the drama. John Williams, the former Director of News of Britain's Foreign Office, asserts that Dr. Ali Larijani, the secretary general of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, was more important in calling the shots. "It seems that around the weekend, Dr. Larijani decided to settle this and took control," says Williams. "He has proved himself a significant power broker, a man who, if he feels it is in Iran's best interests, will do business with the international community." Other observers warn against giving Larijani too much credit. Supreme Leader Ayatullah Ali Khamenei, they say, may have decided that Iran had squeezed as much advantage out of the situation as possible and simply got Larijani to do the legwork to end the crisis.

I wonder if news of a 3rd US Carrier Strike Group entering the Gulf had anything to do with it.
“Who Got the British Sailors Released?”
I think it was the commander of the Nimitz Battle Group. Or fear of him anyway.
That little bit of PR isn’t going to help islam’s cause any. It was they who captured them to begin with. Now they’re the heroes for releasing them?
What General Pelosi didn’t fix it!
That tells you all you need to know whether this was a contrived - premeditated - dog and pony hostage-taking show.
Once the news broke this morning about the release of the 15 British hostages by the terrorist regime in Iran, we can see the diplomats rushing to TV screens telling us see, diplomacy is great, diplomacy works, blah, blah, blah That is exactly what AhmadiNajad and Khamenei want the useful idiots in the West to believe, that Diplomacy works.
The whole hostage crisis was created by the terrorist rulers in Tehran in order to give the false impression to the surrender monkeys and defeatists in the West that the same way the hostage crisis was resolved through Diplomacy, so the Iran nuclear issue can be resolved through Diplomacy. If the defeatists in the West get their way and engage us again in endless and fruitless cycles of diplomacy with Iran regarding the nuclear issue, and stop any meaningful economic sanctions or military actions against Iran under the pretext let diplomacy works, then the terrorist mullahs will have plenty of time to build their nuclear weapons.
I have great faith that the most important man in the world, President Bush, will not fall for this deception by the Islamic terrorist regime, however and without any doubt the defeatists and traitors among us in the democrat party and their media will mount a huge campaign to surrender to Iran under the pretext of diplomatic talks to resolve the nuclear issue.
Let us support our President and stand with him to stop this terror regime from building any nuclear weapon and prevent a new dark age in the world.
Didn’t we release the captured Iranian diplomats two days ago?
The emasculated British government negotiated their release. That’s really all we need to know.
no one “got them released.” The regime did as they chose, when they chose.
Bella Pelosi shows a little leg in Syria, and they realize that using her is a great way to undermine Bush and Blair, and she’s too f###ing stupid to realize she’s being used, so a few calls to terrorist buddies figure its time to embarass Bush and Blair while the traitor is still on their turf!
Into Iraqi custody?......
IMHO, this was a setup by President Bush. He got Nasty Pelosi to go along. The end result is a victory for Bush and Blair, their people are going home!
“What General Pelosi didnt fix it!”
Convenient timeing of her trip, though. I am surprised she has not put headlines in all the papers that she did it.
The HOSTAGES are not free yet. But Nan Pelousy will take credit when they are.
this is what I am basing my comments on.
>IMHO, this was a setup by President Bush. He got Nasty Pelosi to go along.<
Oh, come on. You really think W. would choose Nancy over SOS Condi to do this? No matter what one thinks of W., I don’t think he would do something this dishonorable to one of his own. You’ve been reading too much John Grisham.
....even MADMEN value their OWN lives...!!!
Nah, it was Pelosi and her knee pads.
Jesse Jackson did it. Or was it accomplished by Pelosi visiting with the terrorists? John Kerry on a swift boat?
Perhaps really a swap of Iranians held in Iraq for the British sailors.
Truer words were never spoken...or at least posted...It’s mind-boggling how many will cite this as precedent for future negotiations with Iran.
“the Prophet Mouhammed’s birthday...”
Sounds like a good excuse for a bombing run to me!
On the whole you are correct. Bottom line is Iran embolden themselves further with this....The U.K. looks weak (there is no denying this reality)....
That they have been released is good news. Lets see what comes from their debriefs over the next week or so....
We have too many useful idiots, defeatists, and traitors in the West who want to appease the terrorists like the mullahs in Iran.
It was Nancy Pelosi
You are right, “Nimitz” was a decision maker!
Now about Agent Levinson....
Well, it certainly wasn’t Tony the Wet Noodle.
Churchill must be turning over in his grave.
They haven’t been released yet ...
All I know is....when they are released there should be a complete investigation into their behavior and actions as hostages. They couldn’t stop the Iranians from taking pictures and video of them but I can guarantee that they should in no way have capitulated to their captors. You would’ve had to break my fingers and hands before I would’ve written any letter. They would’ve also had to utterly kill me before I would’ve made any verbal statement. I don’t give a rat’s a$$ why they did those things all I know is if they were true patriots and sailors/soldiers they would be coming home with injuries and even in a body bag. Those Iranian bastards would have to shoot me from the get go because I would be a rabid dog if they captured me. All I remember from the Marines is Name Rank and SS#. You don’t say anything else and you don’t break.
Just wait. She will be welcomed back as the conquering heroine/negotiator. Will the media note that Israel is calling her a liar? They should have known better than to welcome a serpent into their nest. But that's Olmert for ya.
So they *are* released? Rhetorical question.
The MSM will give the credit to Pelosi.
Thinking about this hostage release a bit more:
1)Pelosi and crew had to apply for visas (and security), before visit to Mid-east.
2) Thus the enemies knew ahead of time about the trip of an important US (yeech) politician before hand.
3) The question is whether they knew about her trip before - or - after the hostage taking.
4) Was this then just a total set-up if they knew of her trip before hostage taking,
5) Or were they just milking it until she arrived on ground, to fully embarrass Bush and Blair
6) And she’s to F##king stupid to know that she has been used as a duped pawn in this high stakes game!
(Geez! I sure wish that we had Valerie Plame on the ground to provide trip intel. Puke!)
This is silly.
Treating these captives "munificently" was an obvious PR move - to tweak the nose of Anglo opponents and to demonstrate "moral superiority". One can bet such was the consensus among Iranian leaders. They are not fools.
Brittania no longer rules the waves.
Their sailors are wusses, the way they gave in to the Iranians...acting like they were at a frat house party.
Today really made me sick when they shook hands with that murderous little Shite.
Our Navy men would never behave that way.
Could never have voted for him, but I admire his courage, defying his own party and standing alongside President Bush in the War on Terror.
How quickly people forget.
Are they actually out of Iran yet?
Not yet. They’re supposed to fly out some time tonight.
“I think it was the commander of the Nimitz Battle Group. Or fear of him anyway.”
I agree that this had alot to do with it. This enemy is really tough on everyone until they get stood down.
