GOP Gets Swamped in Money Hunt

By: Jeanne Cummings

April 4, 2007 08:34 PM EST

In the much-watched first quarter of presidential fundraising, the Democratic candidates raised significantly more than their Republican counterparts, creating a huge gap that is putting added pressure on a party already struggling to regroup after the November elections.

According to preliminary fundraising numbers released by the campaigns this week, the combined Democratic field raised about $80 million, compared with roughly $50 million collected by their GOP adversaries.

In 1999, the last presidential race without an incumbent in the race, Republicans raised $33 million in the first quarter, compared with $13 million by the Democrats, according to the Campaign Finance Institute. The disparity was also evident in 1988, when the Republican field reported $19 million in first-quarter fundraising, compared with $3 million by the Democrats.

“It’s a big gap. It’s huge,” said one Republican insider who asked for anonymity so he could speak frankly. “We don’t need to close it in the second quarter, but we need to close it by the end of the year.”

Shocking! The Republican base doesn't want to give money to the RINO frontrunners. I doubt RINO Rudy's call for the public financing of abortion is going to help that situation.

The GOP is doomed unless a prominent conservative like Fred Thompson runs and rallies the base.

The GOP will not get any more money from me until they correct course. Individual conservative / limited government candidates? Yes. The party as a whole? Heck no.

No money to a RINO and no longer money to “Pubbie” Party until RINOs no longer get a bite out of it!

This article is baloney. Reps will give their money when they get ready and it will outdo the Dems. Way too early for most Reps who work for a living.

Then the Republican base I’m sure is giving gobs of money instead to Duncan Hunter...right?

I have made that clear to them as well. They even had a guy call me up to say they needed money to find more Reagan Republicans for 2008! I told him they had a Reagan Republican here in the Arizona 8th, and they didn’t support him. So no more money until Fred Thompson get the nomination!

2 Comments;
The RNC is a certified failure. Mel Martinez sucks as leader. If they call, tell them so.
Donate to individual races outside of your district that will matter..i.e. Allen v. Webb VA
Santorum v. The Ugly dweeb whose name is Casey.
THOSE RACES MATTERED.
2. The Politico website is horrible and full of Moonbat authors and Commentators. Much Hype over nothing

I guess this ends the endless spin by the media that we are the party of the “money’d interests”. Where is the media uproar over the obscene amounts of money the Dem’s are raising?

Wrong. Over the past 20 years or so, the GOP has routinely out raised the Dems. Now that the GOP is perceived as having gone off the rails, it looks like the money that would have goint to their "frontrunners" is sitting safely on the sidelines. This is the price of allowing liberal freaks run the party.

This situation will change if and only if a conservative alternative to Rudy McRomney emerges.

Just wait. He raised "north of $500,000" in the first quarter. While not a huge number, it's real money. Keep watching...

“The party as a whole? Heck no.”

Two to three times a week the R.N.C. has been calling here. There attitude really ticked me off the last few times and I angrily told them they were bordering on Harrassment, and not to call again.

I’ve had it with the Republican Party. They don’t get it.

We will contribute again someday if they will show some real leadership and support true Conservative values.

NOT just us, but most of America still values Conservative ideals. The R.N.C. seems to think the Libs have moved America to the left of center and that is where they are targeting to win. Not the case IMO.

Hunter is the kind of guy who will not win a national election given his inability to shake the money tree but his profile will increase and he could certianly help the party shift more rightward.

Not what you want to hear but it’s a noble calling.

Time has already “told”; you just refuse to look at reality squarely in the face. But since it makes you happy, just keep on whistling past the graveyard.
