Giuliani Backs Taxpayer Funded Abortion (Says it today!)
CNN ^ | 4 Apr 07

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (CNN) -- Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani told CNN Wednesday he supports public funding for some abortions, a position he advocated as mayor and one that will likely put the GOP presidential candidate at odds with social conservatives in his party.

"Ultimately, it's a constitutional right, and therefore if it's a constitutional right, ultimately, even if you do it on a state by state basis, you have to make sure people are protected," Giuliani said in an interview with CNN's Dana Bash in Florida's capital city.

A video clip of the then-mayoral candidate issuing a similar declaration in 1989 in a speech to the "Women's Coalition" appeared recently on the Internet. "There must be public funding for abortions for poor women," Giuliani says in the speech that is posted on the video sharing site YouTube. "We cannot deny any woman the right to make her own decisions about abortion."

When asked directly Wednesday if he still supported the use of public funding for abortions, Giuliani said "Yes." "If it would deprive someone of a constitutional right," he explained....

Ok. Taxpayer funded abortions. Does it get any more liberal than that? That is neither fiscially conservative and nor socially conservative. "I want to let someone kill their baby with your money."

Is this enough for the sailors of the S.S. Giuliani to abandon ship? Or are some Freepers so blinded because all they see is an "R" next to Giuliani's name and he has high poll numbers?

After doing research, Duncan Hunter is the man for the job.

This is undoubtedly a problem for Mayor Giuliani. It will certainly give a lot of folks pause — but the war on terror probably still overrides domestic social concerns for the average GOP primary voter.

But, but, but - what he did as mayor is different than what he'll do as POTUS. He's changed! What? He said this recently? Oh. Um... - be afraid of Hillary! No one can beat her but Rudy! Surrender your values to beat Hillary!

Yeah.....Let’s kill those babies. Small price to pay to keep Hillary out of the Whitehouse. Kill the babies and take some of the savings you’ll enjoy and go out and get yourself that big screen LCD TV. It’s your body....don’t let anyone get in the way of your fun!!

He has staked out a position to the left of Bill Clinton.

but the war on terror probably still overrides domestic social concerns for the average GOP primary voter And all the other Republican candidates (Ron Paul withstanding) wouldn't be strong on the war on terror? You're thinking like it's August 2008 and we've already had a primary.

Maybe, but I think the average GOP primary voter will support a candidate that is strong in the WOT and domestic social issues.

If I were a Giuliani supporter (and everyone here knows I’m not) I would be extremely upset with my candidate right now!

Rudy just did conservatives who oppose him a HUGE favor. As many times as conservatives have put up his past statements to expose his radically liberal views Rudy's supporters counter that those are old statements and that Rudy has magically changed all of his views. Rudy's supporters also, like a bunch of parrots, keep repeating the term "strict constructionists" when the argument turns to Rudy's pro-abortion views. In one interview, Rudy has discredited BOTH defenses as he 1.)says he still holds very radical pro-abortion views and 2.)says that he thinks he's a 'strict constructionist' and that he believes abortion should continue to be protected as a constitutional 'right'.

His statements in this interview were not just a case of someone shooting themselves in the foot. No. Instead he pulled a pin on a hand grenade and blew himself up.

However, as the polls have demonstrated, the majority of Rudy supporters remain unaware of his offensive positions on many issues - especially abortion. Conservatives need to get busy educating fellow Republicans and spreading quotes like this far and wide. Giuliani's past and current liberal views need to be a millstone around his neck to sink any chance he has to be elected to anything within the Republican Party.

It’s a well-established fact that fiscal liberalism will eventually come from social liberalism... that’s how you fund those liberal programs.

I never liked the guy because after 9/11 he made a mint from his "speeches" about those that died on 9/11. That has always struck me as low class.

At best Giuliani has been a very good janitor. He cleaned up New York, he cleaned up after 9/11 or more accurately he was given credit for the cleanup. But we don't need a guy that wipes up things after they get blown up. We need a guy that stops the bad guys before they kill a bunch of us. By my way of thinking the person that will shut down the borders is the guy to vote for.

One more thing about this guy, his kids were I believe 10 and 14 when Rudy was out stooping women other than his wife. If a guy down the street does that I'm not too keen on that. If the same guy just has to leave his wife for some young gal and walks out on those kids I'm not at all keen on that. But, it's none of my business and if he also thinks so little of kids he thinks they should be killed in the womb that's not my business either, unless he runs for president......

The Hyde Amendment currently provides for federal funds for some abortions. Dubya hasn’t changed the impact of that by executive order, or pushed for a change in the law. Sounds like Rudy supports the status quo - it’s not clear he wants to expand that federal funding role.

If it;s’good enough under pro life Dubya’s watch, why isn’t it good enough under pro-abortion Rudy’s watch?

Abortion is morally reprehensible. Abortion is also the law of the land. Our representatives are sworn to uphold the law of the land (some laws more than others apparently). If you don't like the law, change it. Rudy simply states that all life critical medical procedures should be available to all folks regardless of the ability to pay. If this includes abortion, well it is the law of the land.

And no, I'm not a Gulianni apologist.
