Business, Not Mormon Church Ties, Funding Romney, Experts Say
http://www.crosswalk.com/news/11536486/ ^ | 4/6/07 | Sevenbak

Posted on 04/06/2007 9:23:30 AM PDT by sevenbak

The unexpectedly large fundraising total raised by Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney in the first quarter of 2007 had less to do with a "Mormon network" than with the former Massachusetts governor's business acumen and strong ties with the financial community nationwide, according to political analysts...

...The New York Times reported Utah residents accounted for about 15 percent of contributions to the Romney campaign...

Why all this continuous harping over his being a Mormon? Harry Reid is a Mormon, but nobody ever says word about him...........

Yeah right!

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/06/us/politics/06romney.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin

“Of the roughly 450 people who have given the $5,000 maximum allowed annually to his federal political action committee, about a quarter are from Utah, the center of the Mormon church. And of his top eight donors, four — J. Willard Marriott Jr. and his brother, Richard Marriott, the hotel executives; Jon M. Huntsman Sr., the plastics mogul; and L. E. Simmons, the software chief executive — are Mormons who each gave more than $100,000, according to data compiled by the National Institute on Money in State Politics.”

Don’t even go there. While individual contributers may be Mormon, the Mormon church as a whole, by policy, does not make political campaign donations, nor do they endorse or support individual candidates.

Why wouldn’t they support one of their own? I’d be surprised if they didn’t... no need to be so defensive...

I think Romney has secured the limited government, fiscal conservative mantle in the GOP race. If Fred Thompson doesn’t run, I think Romney will win the nomination and I wouldn’t mind supporting him in the general.

Well, we know we can't believe anything the NY Times says generally, and, specifically in this case, the blurb you site has an outright falsehood, since Huntsman has endorsed McCain. Ooops.

So much for experts.

CC, your math lessons need some work. First off, 450 people maxed out at 5000. 1/4 of that being from Utah is still only a half a million. By far the small donors in the masses made this happen for him

Keep trying, you’ve got a long way to go to 23 million.

Seven,

It isn’t MY math, it is taken from the NY Times.

Everyone already is aware that the “small donors” are LDS. No surprises here.

Governor Huntsman and not his father the businessman support McCain.

Oops, looks like you know nothing about Utah (among other things)

Actually, Hunstman Sr. has endorsed Romney. His son, the Gov. of Utah has endorsed McCain.

On a side note, the main reason Hunstman Jr. is not endorsing Romney is BECAUSE of the Mormon factor. I spoke with a former staffer of Huntsman while working up at the Utah Capital a couple months ago. He said that Hunstman has higher aspirations than Gov, and if Romney gets elected, he will not want to put many Mormons in his administration for politically corrects reasons, thus downplaying the whole LDS factor.

Hunstman sees himself in a high position under a McCain admin, but left out in the cold under a Romney admin.

The figure is $5000.00 PER YEAR.

I find it funny that on this thread almost every responder is a Mormon (me included)

“...The New York Times reported Utah residents accounted for about 15 percent of contributions to the Romney campaign...”

This was to his PAC not his Presidential, last year, as RGA president. Mitt didn’t use this PAC for himself but to give money to candidates through out the country. We don’t have the numbers yet from which states it came from, but I guess the NYT wants to get that point across again and again.

If this Mormon network is so vast and lucrative then why did Orrin Hatch raised only 1.5 million when he ran? Why did Mo Udall tank so easily from a lack of funds when he ran? How come ex-Marine Bo Gritz do so poorly financially when he ran his independent campaign?

Let’s assume the NYT is right. 15% of his donors are Mormon. Let’s do the math: 36,000 total donors times 15% equals 5400. Therefore, 5400 Mormons then donated to his campaign. The total numbers of Mormons in the United States is 5,500,000. This means for every 1,019 Mormons, only one Mormon donated money to the Mitt Romney campaign. Shouldn’t that number be higher if Mormons are gleefully and blindly supporting Mitt?

See how stupid the premise of the NYT’s article sounds. Mitt does have substantial financial support from his co-religionists, but it is only from a very small slice who are already political nuts or who have been big time political donors in the past. This article is right, the bulk of Mitt’s support is from his business Rolodex, capturing nearly the same number of Bush Pioneers as McCain and his own business ability to raise funds.

Look around at these threads and how many think he's trying to supplant LDS beliefs on the country. That's why.

Jews have been successful at gov. I’d say Mormon’s can be the same... but you are right, they cannot ‘supplant’ their beliefs on the country/party/etc, or they will likely fail...

What’s the point of this? It’s alalready been established that 112 $5000 contributers were LDS, but that’s still just a half mil.

I suggest you go to opensecrets.org. After I posted the lists, I saw it takes up to much space in the thread, it’s ugly. I won’t post more just on aesthetic and readability grounds. There are many more pages of $5000 contributions. But you can look for yourself.

I did not select Utah only, I clicked “sort by amount”- the other choice is “sort by name”, in this page you can’t sort by zip like you can in other areas of opensecrets.

I don’t find it surprising or disturbing that LDS people would donate to Romney. I bet there will be lots of contributions from LA, I think there are more Mormons in LA than in all of Utah (so I was told, and since LA county has many times more people than all of Utah it is not surprising).

“The figure is $5000.00 PER YEAR.” Yes, that was for his PAC, but that figure doesn’t apply to the current 23 million, because as you know it is a different account. The NYT is mixing up its number to create their story line.

“I find it funny that on this thread almost every responder is a Mormon (me included)”

As you know, most Mormons here at Freerepublic are by far not the average day to day ones. We fall in the 1 out of 1000 category. The political nut cases if you will.

I thought I’d show that all the top contributors were not from Utah. having smeared the thread with the tables I see that the result was ugly and hard to read, I apologize.

The data came from opensecrets.org for those who’d like to see for themselves.

Ok, that is fair. But even the posting you showed that while Jon Huntsman has given him a lot (he’s given a lot to all republicans in the past) there are other donors on that from other areas of the country; it is not the monolithic support that the NYT wants to so desparately characterize.

Huntsman gives to lots of people, not just Pubbies, either.

You are correct, the data does not show monolithic LDS support for Romney. A strong showing, but I bet if opensecrets had a search tab for faith you’d find Mormons supporting lots of candidates. There’s a broad spectrum of people in the church.

I think the Times wants to worry or scare people who know little or nothing about Mormons.

I can go through that list and tie every individual to Bain Capital or Mormonism or Utah.

Would you like me to do it?

Who cares where they are from we are all Americans and vote for who we want!

Who do you think all of the malcontents, anti's and ex-ers and voters in general are going to vote for?

There are some who disagrees with the LDS faith, but I am told want to vote for Mitt for president!

So the field is open, people will vote who they see is the best person for the Job!

Let the chihuahua's nips at the heels!:)

Actually, I used to live there and know quite a bit about Utah (even though not a Mormon). However, I was not aware of the split in the Huntsman family regarding endorsements. My comments were directed at the NYSlimes, not you. But it’s typical that you responded with a personal attack. I will consider the source.

The partial list I posted in 27?

That would be informative, but a lot of work. Could you make it into an article or separate thread here? To make it worth the effort. You may want to use the whole PAC list,

http://www.opensecrets.org/pacs/pacgave.asp?strID=C00403022&Cycle=2006

It does not yet have 2007 data posted. The Utah part is easy, but the other two categories will be more difficult.

It’s nice to see someone with ambition in the morning!

That would be fascinating. Go for it!

Don’t forget that Mitt got also huge donations to his PAC from a lot Bush Pioneers, and from the Swift Boat guys too. I think you will see a lot of various factions. While Mitt has the enthusiastic support of some of his politically active coreligionist, if Mitt was the Mormon only candidate, then he would be a dud to begin with kind of like Orrin Hatch was.

They make it sound like networking is a dirty word when the LDS use it,

....yet a a weeks ago when this Anti/X-LDS video was launched and distribute by them there was nothing wrong with networking...

Go figure those who’s hearts are simular to the left!

I want someone to do it like the Clintons. In my opinion it will backfire and will force the other candidate’s list, it will look even more unseemly for them.

Let’s see, Opus Dei money (the guy from Dominoes) constitutes half of the money for Sam Brownback? What the hell? Chinese Missile technology money going to Hillary? Korean and Iranian money going to Bill Richardson? John Edwards getting money from the KKK? This will get real delicious for us political junkies! I really hope the press really goes through thoses list (they have been very lazy and uninterested in the past), it will make material for several weeks of news cycles, LOL!
